Paramedico (2012)
Very interesting look at paramedicine around the world
This is a wonderful glimpse at paramedicine in 4 different countries around the world: Italy (Venice), Pakistan, Mexico, and the US (Hawaii). The whole film jumps from country to country with clips touching on similar themes. It's interesting to see similarities as well as stark contrasts at times. There are not really any attempts in the film to go deep into the story of any one patient or call, you just go along got the ride and get bits and pieces of everything. I would recommend this film to anybody, but it you are involved in paramedicine then I highly recommend it.
The ambulances in Venice are boats! (Naturally)
Ticket to Paradise (2022)
Romcom that is neither funny nor romantic
I really wanted to like this movie. I was leaning toward not watching it due to the bad reviews, but my wife decided we'd better give it a shot. I really like Roberts and Clooney and I don't mind a good romcom now and again. I figured that romcoms just get poorer reviews it general, so maybe it's not that bad.
It really is that bad. I wanted to like it, but it's bad in so many ways. The entire premise of the movie is pretty absurd. At the beginning of the movie Roberts and Clooney are supposed to basically despise each other, but it's really not believable. You can tell they're just having fun behind the scenes. The dialogue really isn't great. I'd say I laughed out loud maybe 3 times in the whole movie.
You'd think, "well, if I the plot and dialogue aren't great, maybe I can at least see some nice scenery." Well, the scenery is nice, but it's not even filmed in Bali where the movie is set. How hard would it be to just go there and make it authentic...? They also never explain why the main Balinese guy speaks flawless English.
If you're thinking of giving it a chance, I'd say it's not worth the time.
Five Days at Memorial (2022)
Overrated. Disappointed.
I wanted to like this series, but it was a big disappointment.
They complain for 4 episodes that nobody is coming to help them, then when the police come and tell them they need to evacuate in 5 hours they get angry because "it'll be impossible to evacuate everybody that fast". Why weren't they happy that the police brought boats and were going to evacuate people? If they didn't get everybody out in 5 hours, then what? Were the police just going to leave the rest? What was the threat? At the end of episode 5 there's nobody else in sight and the police leave in half-empty boats.
I don't know if this actually happened, but the order to cease all patient care is ridiculous. They have medical personnel sitting around for days not helping patients. I can't think of any even remotely logical explanation for that.
The one guy kills all the pets apparently all alone in a room with dozens of animals.
Vera Farmiga barely does anything the whole series. She's supposed to be some great surgeon, but when she's called to a cardiac arrest she acts like she's never seen one before.
Julie Ann Emery's acting was never convincing for a second.
There was barely any character development.
There are several medical inaccuracies, like "ventilating" a patient with a bag valve mask with absolutely no seal, like there's a inch-tall gap.
If the nurse was just going to carry the neonate onto the helicopter in her arms, why did multiple people lug the incubator up countless sets of stairs to the helipad?
It was disjointed overall. There were some attempts at making something good, but it didn't come together. It definitely doesn't deserve a 7.7. I'm surprised that people aren't picking it apart more here.
Paramedics: Life on the Line (2019)
Great paramedic show
This is a great paramedic documentary show filmed in Vancouver. I love how they show 911 call takers too. It's nice how they show some of the more quiet times in between calls, but sometimes it seems a little bit show in terms of editing. They show a good variety of different types of calls from falls to overdoses to cardiac arrests to abdominal pain. They don't censor much except for patient confidentiality. I love how they usually tell us what happened to the patients in the end. The same production company also made a great series called Emergency Room: Life and Death at VGH which also shows paramedics a bit. I prefer that show.
Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy (2022)
Best I've seen in a while
This is the most I've enjoyed standup in quite some time. It made me want to look up more of Ronny's work. I liked some of the smart jokes about COVID and cultural differences.
Panorama: My Fake Passports and Me (2006)
Fascinating
So much time, effort and money went into this. Respect to Shahida! She traveled around Europe trying to buy passports for every EU country on the black market. Fascinating journey. Could have easily been a feature length documentary.
Gudbay, Amerika! (2020)
Amusing, but not much to it.
This film is amusing at times, but there's not much substance to it overall. Some of the jokes are funny, but the overall plot seems forced and rushed at the end. I like the idea of showing Russian in the US, but I had a hard time ignoring the fact that the main "American" woman in the movie who only spoke English was clearly Russian. I don't know why they couldn't find a native English speaker.
Triple 9 (2016)
It's really not good
I decided to watch this movie because I like several of the actors and I like to watch a good action movie now and then. I saw the mostly bad reviews, but decided that maybe I'll be one of the few people who loves it. Nope. It actually just is not a good movie. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. Poor character development. Confusing movie. Generally just not enjoyable at all.
Horzhí, má panenko (1967)
Maybe I just don't get it?
I decided to watch this because I recently became a firefighter, I saw the good reviews, and I like to watch foreign films. I actually speak Russian too, so I though it would be interesting to listen to the Czech. Well, first of all, the movie has almost nothing to do with firefighting, which is okay, but I didn't find it very interesting at all as a comedy. I probably need to know a lot more context to have it make sense to me, but, from my perspective, it's barely funny and somehow drawn out for such a short film. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. I just thought I should leave this review here, since almost all the other reviews are glowing.
Twice Born: Stories from the Special Delivery Unit (2015)
Beautiful
Beautifully made documentary. Had me in tears multiple times. The medical staff in amazing. They are true heroes.
Da Ali G Show (2000)
20 years later still brilliant
Watching this again after so many years it's still just as brilliant. Cohen is a genius.
News of the World (2020)
Not a bad movie. Not amazing, but not bad.
This movie is shot well, the acting's not bad. There are some pretty scenes. Some funny moments. The story overall is a little dull and not very remarkable. I don't regret watching it, but not very memorable.
The Shape of Pasta (2020)
Wonderful show
This is a beautiful show. The host of the show is so passionate about pasta. There are so many beautiful scenes and wonderful people that share their pasta making techniques. It makes me want to go to Italy and eat some pasta. I'd also love to visit this guys restaurant.
The Outsider (2020)
Too much fantasy for me
I know this is an issue of personal taste, but this one is not for me. I enjoyed the first couple episodes, but it got way too mystic too fast for me. I can't believe I got to episode 7. I was looking forward to some kind of believable explanation for what's going on, but it's all mystic and boogeyman type stuff. It does have beautiful cinematography and good acting, but they don't make up for the story in my books.
Capharnaüm (2018)
Leaves you thinking.
This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. When the movie's over, it doesn't leave you. So well made. So powerful.
Kak ya stal russkim (2019)
Disappointed
I rarely write reviews, but this movie was a big disappointment. The trailer made it look promising, but the movie is very dull. There's next to no plot and the funny parts are few and far between. The sound is horrible. It's so noticable that most (if not all) of the dialogue was recorded after the fact. There were so many moments when we couldn't figure out what they were saying at all, we being myself and my Russian wife. Too bad... The premise wasn't bad.
Suits: Right-Hand Man (2018)
Just keeps getting worse
I loved the pilot of this show and really enjoy the first few seasons, but it really has just been getting progressively worse. There's so much cheesy drama and predictable conversations in this episode. The show has definitely lost it's charm. I've watched every episode up until now, but I think I'll give it one more episode and, if nothing improves drastically, I'm done.
Tonari no Totoro (1988)
I just don't get it. Disappointed.
I think this is the first time I've watched a movie from the IMDB top 250 and I just don't get how anybody could rate it so high. It's a cute movie and it was interesting to think that it was made so long ago a look a little bit at how they depicted Japan in 1988, but I don't find that it was a memorable film at all. It moves along so slowly and doesn't really have any climax at all. I didn't feel a connection with any of the characters. I certainly wouldn't recommend this film to anybody. It is not interesting for me as an adult and I have a hard time believe that it would be captivating to modern children.
The End of Silence (2006)
Mixed Feelings
At first I thought this film was like completely pointless and that the producer must have just made it for the sole purpose of being able to say she made a film. Actually initially I thought I got a foreign film without subtitles, but I knew it was made in Canada so I let it play and finally saw a couple subtitles and then some English. As the film progressed I began to see more and more that it might have some artistic merit. I think the title of this film is symbolic of the end of the silence of Darya as she gets to know Eddie and ultimately the end of the silence between Nora and Eddie. I found this film to be very abstract and I'm not sure there was a solid plot. The scene transitions weren't very obvious, and there were a few points where I really wasn't sure what was happening. The cinematography was very inconsistent, at times it seemed very amateur and then other times it was very artistic and there were angles that were original to me. A few angles led me to believe somebody was hiding behind the bush that was blocking my view, it was a little odd at times, but that could just be due to preconditioning from other films. I think that the acting was quite good for the most part and I guess I can't really complain, it was good for a low budget film.
Madea's Family Reunion (2006)
What's wrong with these reviewers?
I think everybody that reviewed this must be white. Haha, it really seems like it, but it's funny because I am white. This movie was awesome in my opinion. I almost didn't watch it because the rating was so low, but I'm so glad I did. It was the most ridiculous movie I have ever seen, in a good way. It HILARIOUS in some parts while in other parts I was almost crying. That's crazy 'cause I'm just a 16 year old dude. I can't wait to show my girlfriend this film, I will definitely get it on DVD. It's been so long since I've seen a movie that's actually made me laugh, like the kind that I would laugh at if I were alone. This was definitely one of them. It's superb the way Tyler Perry was able to script and produce this, addressing very very delicate subjects in a way that somehow managed to be respectful, yet at the same time humorous. At the same time he acted 3 characters and he was really the life of the movie. Blair Underwood (Carlos) really did a good job at being somebody you love to hate, it's hilarious though because he was also the man that got left in his last movie Something New. Overall I was very pleasantly surprised with this film, outstanding performance by all in my opinion.
Great movie!
Why We Fight (2005)
Pretty good.
I was quite bored during most of it. I've seen several similar movies and I was tempted to just turn it off several times. It was just same old same old. I found that it was rather random and that there should have been more people interviewed since that's what most of the documentary consisted of. The movie did sort of save itself to some degree during the last 15 minutes. I was happy to see some different opinions. I must admit it was put together well as far as the production is concerned and there were a few very good segments, especially the one with the map and the years counting up. I'm only 16 and I'm Canadian so maybe I'm not the best person to be commenting on this, but I think it was okay, but certainly not ground breaking in anyway.
