Daisy Miller (1974)
10/10
beautifully and faithfully made adaptation
16 February 2006
I strongly disagree with the limited, parochial, and dismissive comments of other reviewers' comments. Daisy Miller is a superb and literal adaptation of the Henry James novella. It is still a joy to watch and enjoy this period piece which is perfectly cast. I completely agree with Orson Welles that Cybill Shepherd was born to play Daisy Miller. Her performance is effortless and she aptly embodies Daisy in both looks and spirit. Bogdanovich was right on the mark with the casting of Ms. Shepherd. While it is true she was his girl friend at the time, it is also true that she was perfect for the role. Her interpretation involves rushing through the dialogue as if she couldn't wait for a response so she in turn could reply and in this case it is exactly what Daisy would have done. Cybill Shepherd was at the apex of her beauty and talent in Daisy Miller. She had just starred in three great American films-Last Picture Show, Heartbreak Kid, and Taxi Driver. Daisy Miller could easily be considered along with the three aforementioned film. When I am bored with high tech films, loud action adventure films, and post modern films, I often return with great pleasure to the sumptuous and beautifully realized Daisy Miller.

Happy Endings (2005)
10/10
A sly and seductive film about happiness
8 February 2006
I enjoyed Happy Endings more than any other film I've seen this year. I admit I had a difficult time following the convoluted plot and that the side title narration did not really help, but I found the film to be most rewarding. I am a big fan of The Opposite of Sex so I was anxious to see the results of what this writer/director would do with this same kind of material. I was not disappointed. In a way, Happy Endings reminded me of Sideways but was far more compelling. The performances were extraordinary especially Maggie Gylenhall and Tom Arnold who gives the performance of his life. The fact that he did not get nominated for an Oscar is staggering. This film is NOT FOR EVERYBODY but for those who appreciate intelligent and subtle film making

10/10
well done but flawed film
21 December 2005
Brokeback Mountain is an excellent film but something about it really bothered me. i read the Annie Proulx short story and it had the same problem. i never got any indication of why these two guys were attracted to each other. there had to be some physical attraction but both the film and short story remain mute on the subject. since it was a physical love, i assume they were hot for each other on the basis of looks. there is no denying the spiritual bond but both the film and the short story neglect the point that these cowboy hunks had a physical attraction to each other. this physical attraction is the primary focus of gay men. while it is a superficial characteristic it is a necessary one in the gay world which is all based on appearance. still, the film works as a love story which many can appreciate but i doubt many people will go to see it. heath ledger should win the Oscar for best actor and i sincerely hope he does.
