Tower (2016)
One of the best documentaries i've seen
This movie is one of the most unique documentaries ever made. You don't even need to be a fan of documentaries to enjoy this film. The concept and execution is very masterful. Basically, here was a shooting in Austin, Texas in 1966. There was a sniper at the top of a tower in the area around the University of Texas. It was a devastating event that killed 18 people, But since it was the sixties, there was no footage. So, they used actors to reshoot the events that happened in 1966. Then, they used a technique called rotoscoping to animate the events that happened in 1966. It's truly brilliant when you think about it. The pacing in this movie is some of the best of the year. The editing in this movie is stellar. If you are an editor, watch this. The only problems I have is that I was screaming in my head at some of the things the characters were doing, and there was a scene were there was no sound at all (except the talking). The weird part is that the music and sound mixing in the rest of the movie was all very good. Anyway, this was a very good movie. The premise is unique, the execution is great, it is good on a technical aspect, and it is very intense and sad emotionally. In all, it is great and definitely recommend it to everyone.
Sauce (2017)
Very atmospheric and unpredictable short film
I have been a fan of Ralph Sepe Jr.'s Youtube channel and short films, but I won't be bias just because I am a big fan. of him. If this short film sucked, I would say it sucked. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked how the low budget didn't show. I liked the atmosphere with the old Italian music while the characters were killing the girl and using her blood to make tomato sauce. I liked the performances. I liked the unpredictable story. In all it was good and I would recommend this. It's free to watch on youtube and definitely worth a watch. i give this a 7/10
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Delightful!
I just saw "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" (2016) and it was absolutely wonderful. All the performances were good. I didn't hate the kid and Sam Neil was very good as Hector. There was a very believable bond between Ricky and Hector, and when they had the "get mad at each other and leave" scene, it didn't feel forced (partly because of the subject matter) and I loved that it didn't go on for too long. All the cinematography was fantastic. It was very funny and I love the kind of dark sense of humor that the movie had. I think this had a great soundtrack! and it's not just great songs that already existed and wasn't composed for the movie (though there was a lot in there), also the composed music is really good. It gives off a very mysterious feeling. All the characters were very likable, and not stereotypes (except "psycho sam"), and it was great. I wouldn't give it a 10/10 like some people are, because it has some problems. There was some stereotypes in the movie, (An example being "psycho sam" being the conspiracy theorist stereotype) I think there should have been some more time devoted to the relationship between Ricky and Bella, and I think the plot was kinda predictable. But, I still think this movie was very fun and enjoyable, and I'll definitly recommend it. i give this a 8/10
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
The best comedy I've seen in a while
Shaun of the Dead is one of the most perfect comedies ever. All the jokes are hilarious, The characters are likable, All the decisions the characters make are sensible, It has surprisingly affective drama, and it also works as a zombie movie. I have no doubt that this will become a comedy classic in no time. All the actors are great. It's great to see visual comedy in a time like now where so little comedies use camera placement, lighting and music for endless jokes that you can only pick up on your second or third watch. Also (just as I said) this movie is incredibly rewatchable. It's not like your standard comedy where once you get all the verbal jokes, there isn't anything to laugh about on your second watch. I've seen this movie three times, and all three times I found something new I never noticed the first time I saw it. I recommend this movie to mostly anyone and I give this a 9/10
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
BORING
This is one of the most bland and boring movies i've seen in a while. Every single scene feels like it goes on for an hour. It's attempts at humor is terrible. The sad part, is that there is a lot of water talent here. Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich, Bill Nighy, Jason Schwartzman, Alan Rickman. These are all very talented actors, and it is all wasted with this awful director. It can be creative or funny sometimes, but it's mostly crap. You may be asking, "Why would you watch that?". Good question. I still don't know. I was bored, and I didn't know watch. I was surfing around HBO and i saw this. So like a moron I thought to myself "This can't be that bad". But I was wrong. Don't watch this. It doesn't deserve the price of admission or even for free on HBO. It sucks. I give it a 3/10
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
A True Masterpiece
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is a modern marvel and will become a classic very soon. This film is one of the only best picture winners that was in fact the best motion picture of the year. All the actors were fantastic. Michael Keaton should have won and he was eons better than eddie redmayne. It is edited as if it was all it one continuous shot. And as someone who edits a lot and tries to do this style sometimes, I could find the cuts only three or four times in the entire film. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is brilliant and this movie is his best, which is saying a lot giving is very good track record. I recommend this movie to everyone and I think this movie is the best film of 2014. I give this movie 10/10
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
One of the best films of 2014
The Grand Budapest Hotel is fantastic. Wes Anderson puts so much work into every film he's made. He's a great filmmaker, and he has really out done himself here. The style and cinematography always matches the time period and place. His style is amazing. He uses lighting and shot placement to establish emotions in a very affective way. Every shot is symmetrical and every pan, or zoom, or tracking shot is mastered and used to great affect. He makes intentional mistakes and uses different aspect ratios so he can make you feel like you are watching a film from whatever time period the scene is taking place in. Ralph Fiennes is great in this movie. I think he gave the best male performance of 2014, and he was snubbed. Anyway besides the style , the comedic script is very good. The way it sets the tone, it really is an escape from reality. The only (very minor) complaint is that there was one sequence where they used CGI which would have been betterif they used practical effects. Other than that it was an absolute joy to watch and I will defiantly be watching it again. I give it a 10/10
Black Panther (2018)
Grossly overrated mess
Black Panther is one of the most boring and forgettable MCU films since "Thor: The Dark World" . I'm not a racist, and i'm not getting paid off by DC or some crap like that. No one pays me. I just thought the movie was moronic and boring on a technical and personal level. Everything besides the music and the color pallet is painfully average. And it stunned me how people are acting as if this is a political thriller. This is another Marvel movie that is about one guy going in a black wunzie and beating up some guy with a bad motivation. It has a 97% on rotten tomatoes. People and including and especially critics are saying this is better that the best superhero movies like The Dark Knight (Which is one of the best movies of all time by the way) and Superman (1978). The humor is incredibly cringe worthy and awkward. The villains motivation is completely basic. All the characters have no complexity at all. It isn't nearly as good as the best MCU films like Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 (2017) or Iron Man (2008). It is just very average. I give it a 4/10
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind is one of the most brilliant things i've seen
This is on of the greatest films i've seen In a long time. This phenomenal film shouldn't have just won best original screenplay, it should have won best picture of the year. Charlie Kaufman is a genius and he wrote this amazing script that definitely deserves your money. All the actors are fantastic, and this is my favorite performance from Jim Carrey. The best way to go into this movie is to know as little as possible about it. I won't spoil the movie for you, but i]the plot twist is very unexpected. This movie is brilliant and deep. I absolutely recommend this film if you haven't seen it. I give this a 10/10
