Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
nice film
What i really liked abt the film was its lenght. If a film is 2,5hrs or longer it becomes an experience, the story telling gets better, its like sour dough that gets a chance breath.
The story is compelling and as someone who thinks robert deniro is overrated most of the times he really gave a wonderful performance. But its not a groundbreaking performance and many other actors couldve played the part well. I didnt like leo di caprios performance and i dont understand the hype around lily gladstone . She gives a good performance but her character is so passive and i just wish she had something more to work on. The same for leos performance, he seemed like a caricature in many scenes.
In my opinion Cara Jade Myers was the highlight of the film as the troubled sister of molly. She really lit up the screen and the character + performance were top tier.
To summarize: a good movie, good performances, characteres were a bit underdeveloped but its worth watching.
Passages (2023)
A bad + bland movie - tragic!
This is just another "euro-film" that is marketed as deep + intellectual but is simply put an example of bad filmmaking.
The acting is just horrible, the overemphasizing of emotions should belong to the stage. The pacing was off + kept the film from being somewhat interesting. Instead of placing the revelation of the abortion at the end it wouldve been better to have it in the middle so the focus could ve been on the falling out of the characters - while the first part couldve been the love story. There were soo many unnecessary scenes also. And the characters were just sooo stereotypical with their pretentious artsy-ness. Only ppl who are in those circles could think that they re interesting and should be on the screen. So thats another missed opportunity to show characters who could show depth - because those arty types clearly couldnt!
The film missed the opporunity to use stilistic elements to turn the interesting topic into a captivating piece of art. Why not use campy humor, why not make it film noir-ish, why not be creative? It was soso bland and so below average of what a relationship movie should be.
The only redeeming quality was Adèle Exarchopoulos who was the only one with screen presence + who has undeniable talent - opposite to the vain male actors who were just blabbing their platitudes.
A really bad movie. The quality in film making seems to have completely vanished over the last years. It sad.
Moonage Daydream (2022)
Superficial + boring
This film didn't explain anything abt the art of bowie, it was just pretentious blabbing from the man himself mixed with live footage and other sequences. In each era that the film showed he was telling the same, so where was the growth artistically + on personal level? It got so boring after about an hour but the film kept dragging on +didn't deliver any insightful or new information. Film could really need interviews from collaborators or colleagues bc bowie himself only offered pseudo deep wisdom.
For me the film basically showed how a person became a product. +even in death he's a remains product marketed to an audience. So dreadful.
The Invisible Man (2020)
Perfect thriller
This film is the perfect thriller, slow tension building, great directing, unexpected twists and superb acting from aldis hodge, elisabeth moss and storm reid. oliver jackson-cohen playing the invisible man was a smart casting choice. his acting wasnt on par with the others when he was visible in certain scenes so him being invisible during most of the movie was a good decision.
Di jiu tianchang (2019)
How beautiful
What a beautiful story about what it means to be a parent in this world and how we are all connected.
The story is told by jumping back and forth in time, a flow of scenes giving the viewer a glimpse of the changes in the life of a couple who lost their son and how they try to move on with this loss. Although they abondon old friends after the incident a connection remains and in the end the lives of this group of people comes full circle.
This film brings the message of everyone being connected to another and the importance to sincerely care about others to the screen in such a wonderful way with an incredible cast. The three hours felt so short but something still remains, just like in life when one is touched by the goodness of others.
Highly recommend this movie.
1917 (2019)
Really good
Very dramatic war film that shows the terror and trauma in all its horror. The seemingly one long shot of the first and second part adds to the whole stress of the operation of the two cadets. beautifully shot landscapes contrast the stoic but terrified characters.
What I escpecially liked abt the film was that it included sikh and black soldiers.
A film abt their experiences in the military and during the war would be much appreciated and necessary.
As I wrote in the beginning i liked the film a lot but there have been enough stories told abt white male suffering :D
Cats (2019)
It is bad
This movie is really bad. The horrible thing is that its based on a popular musical with obvioulsy lovely songs but the songs dont make an impact in this movie because of the direction and messy art direction. The songs are the essence of cats. Also the beautiful >catlike< choreography of the stage production - but unfortunately it was replaced by some not so catlike dance numbers. theres no charm, no life in this film!!
the acting of jason derulo, taylor swift and the others is fun to watch, what ian mckellen s part was that i still dont undersand - his >performance< was abyssal. Jennifer Hudsons acting was on par but her singing war just like mc kellens shtick, simply terrible - what had been a beautiful moment of the stage production of cats was here a cringworthy tear jerk.
please hollywood, start to develop original stories again!
Us (2019)
Amazing horror movie
Just left the screening and I am shook!
I cannot write a long essay abt the movie but can tell you that its so disturbing bc it so imbalanced in a way. The first part with the home invasion feels more comedic than horrifying but everything that happens afterwards is so distressful and the ending is haunting, even when i expected the twist from the beginning. But its just heartbreaking.
The movie is beautifully shot and the acting is superb! Lupita Nyong o is incredible and Winston Duke is great too and offers some funny lines during some of the terrifying scenes of the film. The child actors are amazing too.
It was the perfect horror movie experience and I recommend watching it. Cant wait to read thinkpeaces abt it and maybe even watch it again.

Making stalkers great again?
What start with the premise of an intriguing "boy meets girl of his dreams, boy turns out to be a psychopath"-story with inner monologues of the male main character explaining and justifying the viewer (and himself) his sick actions and to make us trust and root for the unlikely "hero", turns out to be another vehicle to vilify smart independent female characters.
I am not surprised that this show got picked up my netflix since it seems to be the place for shows that glorify crime, violence and desperate measures.
