The Holdovers (2023)
Heartwarming
I laughed. I cried. I cringed! This movie will make you a better person and points out the dangers of hypocrisy. I love Paul Giamatti. Even when he is straight faced, he speaks a thousand words. Parents, grab your teens and take them to see this. I also loved the 70s vibe of the cinematography. They must have used CGI to line the street scenes with old cars. Either that, or they emptied every junk yard & vintage car collection. This put me in the mood for Christmas with the party and constant snow scenes. Parents: do not send your kids to boarding school. It's not all about you or your posh dreams for your future or theirs.
A Very Merry Mix-Up (2013)
Girl Meets Potential.... Serial Killer
The movie features a really naïve girl believing a stranger she meets in an airport when he tells her that he is her fiancé's brother. Even better, she takes his word for it without asking for ID and accepts a ride from him to get to her destination. This movie managed to insult my intelligence in its first 20 minutes. Then, there's the scene when they share a hospital room. Didn't know hospital rooms have gone co-ed. PULEEEEEZ!
Neptune (2015)
Artsy But Unresolved
If you ever saw Eraserhead, this is it without the taboo but with better scenery. It keeps your attention till the end by using hooks that, when you get to the end, make little conclusive sense. Good acting, but someone is to blame for the screenplay and disappointing ending. This is a film only the pretentious could enjoy.
Buddy vs. Duff (2019)
Judges Need to Define Guidelines and Perimeters
At the beginning of the first episode, Duff said he thought the competition was "all about technique: you have to be able to do technically difficult things." Buddy said he was going "Hoboken Style: go big or go home." This is the problem with the show. The producer didn't make clear what the judges would be looking for. Do they want realism and super detail (Duff) or do they want Las Vegas flash (Buddy)? For the taste portion of the show, let the bakers do what they want... FINE! But, the cake portion of the show needs clarification, even if it's simply "make a car cake for 100 people" OR "make a super detailed car cake."" I feel so sorry for Duff (who doesn't love that guy?) being associated with a show that has loose ends and a loose cannon like Buddy. He knows what it's like to judge well-defined competitions and to see how others act under pressure (the good, bad and ugly), and he knows better than to make a fool of himself and ruin his good reputation. Buddy has been in his own world for years, he's been the boss of his bakery for years, and he just doesn't know how to play nice with others. AWKWARD!!!
Marooned (1969)
Three Gabby Goofs
For its time, I'm sure the effects were amazing. But, like most 60s movies, this movie insults the intelligence of its audience. I was raised in the 60s, and I know people weren't so stupid that they didn't know that the more you move and talk, the more oxygen gets used. These guys just needed to stop talking, and for god's sake answer the commander's questions! 60s movies were the pits!
