In from the Side (2022)
not good, not bad
Gay rugby players, good acting, very handsome guys... that should do it all, at least for a gay audience. However, the story is just too long. It is filmed and performed as if we are watching a great Greek tragedy, as if somebody is dying. However, tt is just about two handsome guys in relationships having an affair. This might be sad for some partners involved, but it is really not a big drama as presented in the movie. The story itself is okaish, but another director would make it to a comedy with some thoughtful moments. There are several longer scenes showing the guys playing rugby. Again. They are oakish, but Leni Riefenstahl, did that 85 years ago much better..
Opfergang (1944)
decadent and morbid
Everything in the films is over the top. The atmosphere is morbid, the colours seem unreal, the people are extremely rich, work are doing the others, costumes and set are perfect. Kristina Söderbaum is perhaps not the perfect cast for one of the leading roles, but her acting is fine. All elements combined add up to an incredible, sort of surrealistic work, set in a time and in an era that never existed. In another place and in another time, it would be very easy to rate this film as masterpiece. But the directors morals are questionable as we know from his other films. It is disturbing to see this perfect world. Knowing that while the film was made at a time when millions died a horrible death. The film comes over as the sound track and moving picture gallery to the death of the Third Reich..
Hiacynt (2021)
good film
Good film, i had a Polish boyfriend in 1985 and was often in Poland in these years (I was living in West Berlin). I was in about the same age as the main characters in the film, so i can heavily relate to the setting, time and people. The brownish dark. Coloring of the film is exactly how i remember these days in Poland. The cloth and fashion are also very accurate. While in the West, moustaches were in 1985 pretty much uncool, in Poland everybody was wearing them. The story is in the first half sometimes a bit slow, but in the second half of the film i really got into it. The acting is very good. The film clearly shows how complicated gay life was in Poland. However, homosexuality was not forbidden. Lists of gay people held by the police were in the West common too. The story of a sex tape with important people on it, could be a story in any western country too.
Our Flag Means Death (2022)
silly
Pirate comedy, gay love story. The setting, costumes and designs look pretty expensive. Well done on that lever, good cast. But the story is for my taste often too silly and sometimes also boring..Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet the Gentleman Pirate is just over the top. In contrast Taika Waititi as Blackbeard is just hot. It seems in 2021 we are not yet ready for real gay action heroes. Gay pirates are only possible in a silly comedy.
Unmögliche Liebe (1932)
scandal
Asta Nielsen's.only talkie. Well played from all actors. Her voice is fine, so there was no reason for her stopping the career. The film is well made, the story easy to follow and not boring (unlike too many other early films). However, the story itself is not very convincing, at least from a 2022 perspective. A widow (Asta) in her early 50s is dating younger man, in his 30s. This is causing a scandal. For me, there is nothing scandalous about it, but perhaps I am too much trapped in my own time.
Home Stay (2020)
good film, worth watching
A couple is on the honeymoon. You follow them in all what they are doing and start to like them. Suddenly bad things happen and you really fear for them. In most horror films, I really do not care about the horror victims. In this film that is different. The Film is most likely on low budget, but here is does not matter., as there are no special effects. The movie is filmed as sort of documentary. All scenes are presented as if recorded by CCTV or smart phones.
O Fantasma (2000)
nocturnal adventures
The film follows the nocturnal adventures of handsome Sérgio. He works as a rubbish collector and many of his adventures are sexual encounters with other men. This is a film by a gay director for a gay audience. The film does not apologize to a main stream audience about sexual behaviors. They are just shown, and quite explicit. They just happen and most often in a somehow innocent way. The border between sexual fantasies and reality are not always clear, and I had to watch the film a second time for understanding many details, such as the opening scene that would go in a conventional film at the end. Too many gay characters in films of the recent years are well off middle class men, so it is nice to see here a normal working class guy.
Snatched (2017)
not as bad as expected
I mainly watched the film for Goldie Hawn. I did not know Amy Schumer at all. The film starts as a pretty good black comedy, with several good text lines and funny text lines. However, in the second part, it turns to a just silly adventure comedy with a story that is simply over the top and comes over as stupid. There are still some good laughs, so the film is never really boring. For my taste there is too much violence that does not really fit into 'light' comedy.
The Banger Sisters (2002)
friendship and looking back on life
In First Wives Club, Goldie Hawn said: 'There are only three ages for women in Hollywood: "Babe", "District Attorney", and "Driving Ms.Daisy."' Goldie Hawn was for three decades the eternal babe. However, even for Goldie Hawn there came a time, when 'babe' was no longer possible. With Banger Sisters she is for the last time 'babe' and is also saying good bye to this role, as she realised that she is too old for this. Consequently, she never appeared again in any other movie after Banger Sisters, evidently as she does not want to become "District Attorney".
Banger Sister is about two women looking back on their lives. They were friends when young but developed in different directions after separating. Suzette (played by Goldie Hawn) stayed 'babe' and worked as bar tender in music clubs, while Lavinia (Susan Sarandon) married a lawyer and politician and became mother of two daughters. They also meet Harry(Geoffrey Rush) who also looks back on his life and on missed opportunities. The film is not perfect. The speech of Lavinia's daughter at the end is just embarrassing. Otherwise it is sometimes funny, sometimes sentimental. The film is also about friendship and how friendship can develop (here between Suzette and Harry) and how friendship can survive over decades.
Flirting with Anthony (2005)
weird and sexy
I watched 'Flirting with Anthony' a first time and had no idea what was going on; however, some scenes are quite haunting, so I watch it again; reading a summary of the plot also all made sense.
The first part of the movie shows some pretty dark sex fantasies, the rest is some kind of sexy comedy in the form of a road movie. Both parts don't really connect and I did not even realised that the same main figure appeared in both parts (D. Cartier at the beginning of the movie without beard, looks totally different with beard in the second part of the film).
'Flirting with Anthony' also a little bit of a porn with a story line, but would not really call it a porn. It is more a road movie with explicit sex scenes. In most main stream movies these scenes or situations are not shown at all. Daniel Cartier and Jack are hot. I also liked the Techno sound track of he film, which works pretty well. Altogether, the film is quite different to most movies I have seen, therefore it is really a fun to watch.
