Euphoria: The Theater and Its Double (2022)
Very specific
Very specific writing that's insightful to those who can relate to Lexis ambition and function as a visionary. I didn't see this coming. Definitely one of my favorite episodes.
Don't Look Up (2021)
A needed wake up! Don't hit snooze 💤
Brought to light the disfunction of media & figure factors that affect the immediate truths about our only world/ survival!
Some say it's too heavy handed or and exaggeration but but if you've been around you see how it's actually not an exaggeration of the dangerous everyday convenient truths.
The Truman Show (1998)
Comedic Twilight Zone with Rich Aesthetics
This elaborate piece was made with the richest paints & crafted very specifically for the fullest affect.
& Even though this picture aged so well, considering it's truthfulness to the present time, for some reason I don't care about it's social theories (which is also the spine of the story) I really watch it to watch the absurdist (Jim Carey) make a light topic of it all. Is that his super power?
Blood Beat (1983)
Interesting Low budget evil spirit haunting*
Adventurous style of a story.
Done so simply.
Shows that the style and direction can tell any story interestingly without anything besides decent actors.
Society (1989)
EPIC EXPOSITORY YOU'RE NOT READY FOR.
It starts as a typical 80's teenage drama with some moments of mysterious strangeness that uncovers an all too human resolution-
That is, societies unusual taste for those who don't "fit in".
You are warned that there is some body horror that IS NOT easy to watch.
The Lady Vanishes (1938)
The invention of comedic relief !
Even though this movie is full of loose ends it's truly interesting.
Such fun energy in this film.
Starts off a little obscure without any direction (kind of like wizard of oz before the tornado) and then the inciting action of the vanishing woman happens!
The momentum is picked up and the movie takes off into a comedic mystery that's not as mechanically boring as other films of this caliber.
Some really classic scenes in this movie !
Rushmore (1998)
Wide American Ode !
The comfort of the youthful opportunistic view,
as easy as the sky,
Channeling the welcoming, forgiving adult world & easy-going communities we all inhabit.
Encouraging us to look past any sticky relations and come together to support each other.
Easy, easy, easy... !
One of the easiest watches on my watch!
Nightcrawler (2014)
Intelligent Distillation !
Exposes the hunger, chase & perspective of mediated profit.
More than just an Art endeavor.
The Indian Runner (1991)
But.....
Topically I would give this movie a 10 but the delivery didn't feel strong for me.
Jamaica Inn (1939)
My favorite Laughton performance!
Higher caliber film that carried some directorial depth from start to finish (more than most movies of this era).
Laughton was way ahead of his time with this compellingly complex demented character.
Didn't think Hitchcock tackled stories like this- I enjoyed it more than his horror/ mystery films.
Cadillac Man (1990)
I laughed and felt the resolution !
I can see why many would think it's not anything great but it's fun and seemed like it was made for the everyday Joe (or Joey) rather than for some cinematic acclimation.
You see a guy who's life is at the tip top of stress and when things get worse he succumbs to accept it all.
The writing and layout of all shots were just so comically true to the hysteria of inner city life it felt like an ode to us in the big cities..... where the streets are a conveyor belt pushing more consumers through quick and smooth as possible, even if that means by lies*
Being John Malkovich (1999)
Finally a movie to tackle the intangible madness*
Imagination machine washed with absurdist soap to deliver a delirious story with a spine that pokes right at some unspoken/ strange qualities of our 21 century selves- identity, idolization & artistry*
Biggest film-wish that I saw this in theaters.
Flashback (1990)
Sorry.
Weird enough 5% of the writing is very interesting and creative and the rest of the 95% is very cringy.
On the Waterfront (1954)
10 HEAVY STARS
An unrelenting story formed for the soft parts of ourselves.
Brando & Eva have a universal chemistry that's as special as watching shooting stars*
Overlooked and underrated!
So many qualities of this movie have been used after and onward without original recognition but connection to story is where the film lives and the result is in the shockwaves that are recycled.
On the Waterfront is now one of my highest regarded films **********
JFK (1991)
Great Disillusive Material*
Forgot how cinematically elaborate this is!
Felt like a classical tragedy.
For all you who dislike the factuals- Oliver stone said JFK was a movie in which he got all the crazy theories and presented them. "You are taken to a time of much distrust, horror, confusion, corruption, and cover-up".
"It is an outcry from Oliver Stone to remind us that truth is never simple".
"Stone runs the difficult task of presenting fact, fiction, conjecture and opinion, twisting them all to present the increasingly difficult dispute".
Kevin Costner had a strong performance.
Gary Oldman looks almost identical to Lee Harvey Oswald.
& Even John Candy shows a deeper shade!
It's got great scenes & cool speeches that, I feel, can be molded into a theatrical tragedy.
Chinatown (1974)
Hypnotic*
I think & hope I will always be captivated by the rhythms & tones this film expresses.
Over all the chills, thrills and dangers of this movie there is just a Meditative-Overlay that makes this movie very attractive & of course Hypnotic*
Broken Lullaby (1932)
30's Gold.
Most Definitely holds up and shows the intellectual capability, both Ideally & artistically.
I strongly believe it will be better than some movies in 2032.
Lionel Barrymore had a beautiful/responsible speech that should be a household ideal because it definitely challenged me on my stance to the matter.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
A Heart-Driven* American Picture. 8.2
An easy watch that reminds me Hollywood can pass on a little truth and pride.
Altogether well oriented-
Exemplifying dignity and morals by separating the heart driven characters versus the selfish/uptight moneymen....
& also showing that PG13 is a high standard in cinematic storytelling (Mangold must have a heart of gold).
Matt Damon & Christian Bale had the love in their eyes as they played their roles with such grace.
The Lighthouse (2019)
A Mystical Psychosis.
Clean, stylized cinematography. Vigorous acting. Elaborate script.
The scoring/ sound fx deserve most credit for it's horror elements.
**Willem Defoe deserves the Oscar*****
Robert Pattinson seems to show more and more ability each movie he makes- possibly deserves the Co-star award.
Joker (2019)
A Surprisingly Grounded & Interesting film-- yet not essential Joker. 8.5
Overall Great movie!!! (writing, direction, acting)
I am excited to see if it's strength raises the bar for newer releases.
It's plot sings the blues of the jokers story and does so with nostalgic aesthetics- combining "Taxi driver" psycology with a "King of Comedy" theme (Coincidently two movies starring De Niro & directed by Scorsese).
The emphasis was heavy on the mental illness and misfortunes of Arthur Fleck but unexplored were the entertaining/ musicality traits of a joker.
The playfulness that was expressed through the character seemed more-so of Joaquin Phoenix and less in the spirit of Joker.
Throughout the movie the Joker is portrayed as self conscious and the resolution/ climaxed rebellion is an out-cry from that- not so much on his real connection to Gotham or a villainous reign.
That said I don't see this Joker bright enough to be an infamous, self sustaining, street-wise villain.
Saddle the Wind (1958)
More Depth and authenticity than many westerns.
Robert Parrish never disappoints,
The actors had no false moments,
& I always appreciated Rod Serlings deep, morally-balanced stories (I wish He should've wrote more westerns).
One moment I can say was really special for me was when London sings to Casavettes (their chemistry right there was very organic within the confines of the story).
Other than that I cant say its an iconic piece of film making brilliance but different than most westerns that you've seen with the factors of it having well crafted cinematic qualities in the simplest form (as most Parrish movies do- he was great at simplifying).
The Dark Knight (2008)
A Compelling Beam of NEO-NOIR.
This movie landed, exploded and sent shock-waves for some time.
To this day it's always great to see the reign of the most depth-full joker.
It's a deep crime thriller written in a hard boiled style with a layer of goth-psych over it.
For the most part it's so fast paced that we are occupied and miss the reality and weight of the situation, so much so we are only entertained and intrigued and accept the layout easier. I feel like other Nolan movies do the same- The
Prestige & Inception.
If you stop and watch this movie attentively you'll notice the shallow parts of the film and get a better feel for the illusion it tries to illustrate.
Never the less it has Iconic qualities and came out at a time when it could be most appreciated.
Gunsmoke: Ten Little Indians (1965)
Great scenes but flimsy ending.
The tension it starts with builds to no pay off.
The scenes contained some of the best acting I've seen on a western tv show but they all reduced to a weak come around resolution for the ending.
I didn't know Bruce Dern could act, I though he was just a face and a voice for a background bad guy.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Tarantinos gentlest movie. 7.6
Quentin made an indie film about an actor and his stuntman and an average couple days in 1960s Hollywood (that is until the end). Unlike Quentins other films there isn't many thrills, more vintage pleasantries. It's alot simpler and slower than you'd expect from the flashy movie poster BUT of course the attractive cinematography keeps you in. The lengthy one-shot scenes are talented- DiCaprio built an organic time-stamped character. I wouldn't go to the theaters to watch again BUT If I do watch it again it wouldn't be for entertainment but only to meditate on the easy LA times it portrays.
Jack of Diamonds (1967)
Meditative euro-paced elagance. 7.6
Seen this on film at the new beverly and it was a treat.
The first burglary scene was delightful and cute and then there were some late 60's thematic pleasantries.
The soundtrack (Which i've made a note to get ahold of) made this movie visually melodic; such as-The opening scene, The ski-ing scene & The dance scene.
I'd watch it again to meditate on the elegance it celebrates so well.
