Yu Gu Yao (2023)
It has some good moments but it all goes to waste.
First at all, what a waste of good actors. Xiao Zhan smiles so little here, it's almost a crime. All that charming "The untamed" magic and chemistry can hardly be seeing here... I was hoping for a more lighter personality development at some point, but no. What they do well is the female character development, specially with Wang Churan's character. The plot is nothing new, and it starts to get on your nerves. It's a consecutive description of impossible tasks that are solved in the next 30 seconds or less. I mean, whats the point of it at the end? They waste the fictional genre by feeding these nonsensical motives followed by a need to justify the love bound. Not one of the bests, for sure. At the end, you can't help to compare it with "till the end of the moon", where the character development is so spectacular, that the fictional takes stays on a second place. You want to follow the characters' fate more than the awesome display of visual effects. Here is a waste of great good looking acting. Hope they take in consideration when planning another project. This is becoming quite repetitive and frankly, not worth the watch.
First Love (2022)
Nice but another memory loss is just a no no for J dramas.
I loved the calm pace for telling this story, the music, the photography... but I dare you to work in better scripts, with no memory loss cliches and the constant effort to create a better and most valuable shows. This again provides scene to the constant gaming for increasing the bets, but it gets lost in a barely credibly story. It all just becomes so rehearsed and fake...this ain't love, this is the misunderstood hero's journey who needs to prove himself through constant suffering. And of course, there's the unreachable maiden, very far from any attempt of happiness.
No.
You have the budget, amazing actors and great scenarios, you just need to work in better and new stories.
I'll say this is good for watching while eating. Very relaxing, for those who don't look to be impressed.
Mil Colmillos (2021)
Surreal adventure that needs a second season
I only watched this with a Predator nostalgia. As a South American, the Spanish version makes a lot more sense than the English one. We are used to magical realism and the intangible harsh universe that embodies the jungle, and all related to it, therefore the show is good, filled with action and unexpected turns. The actors are really something, and the sets had me wondering how come they had the professionalism to go into those places... I wouldn't have even if paid... but the lows are located in the narrative, that many time losses cohesion. The way this story is being told requires a broader explanation, and some consideration toward the expectator that knows little of the frenzy connected to these places, especially the deep scars left by the opportunism led by the first European conquerors to the nowadays guerrilla groups. There's great potential here to keep developing an outstanding tale. Aside from that, the jungle is always an unsettling scenario for horror movies.
Colonia Dignidad - Aus dem Innern einer deutschen Sekte (2020)
Every Chilean should watch this
As a Chilean, born in the 80's, growing in the fractured world of the Pinochet dictatorship, this documentary was absorbing. At some point, the news exploded with Salo Luna, speaking the unspeakable, narrating how this hardly known German group, influencing the Chilean politics, had done such and such. And little by little, that chamber of horror continued, giving space to more and more... in a way, this contributed not only to the downfall of the dictatorship, but also to search a point of understanding, as a wake up call to all things done in the past. In that perspective, the documentary is quite enlightening. You can go step by step and submerge yourself in the line of events. I believe it's a must see, for deniers and supporters, so that we don't repeat the mistakes of the past. No human should be allowed such an unlimited power, especially one that allowed such evilness.
Xiang Mi Chen Chen Jin Ru Shuang (2018)
Funny, spicy and filled with great elements. Must watch.
This is the romantic serie I always come back to, and the one I measure all the others. Their creators not only came to consider a great plot, an amazing storytelling and a friendly eye to the viewer (whether you were used to doramas or not); but also added extraordinary leading actors with outstanding chemistry, taking the time to offer a great CGI production with the highest possible respect towards their audience. No wonder why this show is so loved.
El Bosque de Karadima (2015)
Good movie, but hard to watch.
I dislike how some people use the word "gay" for reviewing this movie. Evil is real, and it seduces swiftly, promising and caring deceitful, to finally take away your will, and have you psychologically under the spell of a monster that will consume it all, disguised as saint.
What's great about this movie?
It illustrates the loop very clear; starting with the search of love out of everything there is, going through a brief depiction of the family of the lead character, the social and historical background of Chile in the 80's.
The story is true, and it explains one of the biggest scandals of the Catholic church that still has consequences in the news nowadays.
It aims high to explain why the loop is so successful and widely criticized by others. the spiritual trap however is left to the judgment of the viewers.
The lows:
The movie is closer to a documentary, lacking of empathy and emotional connection with the audience.
It is mostly oriented to Chileans, for example, Pinochet appears in a TV briefly, but neither his name, nor the circumstances are explained. This is a pivotal piece of information, because it illustrates how the atmosphere of the film was filled with uncertainty, great fear to oppose the authority and widely accepted credibility towards the powerful Catholic Church.
