Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
I genuinely cannot fathom how someone could not love this film.
I have to admit, Marvel is just full of geniuses.
So we're in a setting where we have roughly a dozen superheroes so maybe you fear the lack of character development, insufficient movement on the plot, or perhaps you just suspect a very thin plot. Free yourselves from those perceptions and rest assured that Marvel knows what it is doing:
Instead of trying to significantly build on their massive number of heroes, it almost seems to focus more on the villain, Thanos, who I believe gets the most amount of screen time in this movie. I personally found this brilliant because it doesn't over-complicate the story of any one single hero and eliminates some sense of superficiality we would often otherwise get. Each relationship between the protagonists seems believable and too much time isn't spent on a single particular protagonist. Shifting the balance to the development of the antagonist enables a great flow to the movie, both in terms of character and plot development, and it does this so seamlessly.
So prepare yourself for there is humble and perfect amount of comedy; there is action so spectacularly executed that it supersedes my imagination; there's love, loss, and even just a little heartbreak. It's truly one of the greatest roller coaster's I've been in my life.
Don't go into it being overly critical and keep in open mind. Also yes, they will always continue to encourage you to spend more money with this franchise; but, you know what? - I will be more than happy to keep spending it and I think you will be too. :)
Congrats on another fantastic addition to the franchise! (y)
DARLING in the FRANXX (2018)
After thousands of hours of anime, this one takes the cake.
While I have never written a review before, I felt incredibly compelled to do so after watching the most recent episode (15) as this has quickly rose to the top of my list of the dozens of animes I have watched.
Darling in the FranXX excels and drawing out an incredible variety of emotions; it has the thrill of an awesome shonen/action series, characters each with unique (often relatable) personalities and surprisingly interesting backstories, the occasional set of humour, a beautiful combination of music, art, and animation, but most importantly a magnificent ability to tell an incredible romantic story between the two primary protagonists.
You will feel excited and frustrated, exhilarated and saddened; you will laugh and you may cry, both tears of sadness and joy; and, the more you watch, the more you will find the need to watch. It does what I have never seen any other animes do - it brings together those that watch shonens/action shows with those that watch rom-coms/slice of life animes and it seems to do it effortlessly.
Although the value of each episode may fluctuate throughout the series, stay patient as each episode is still significant and the creators excel at bringing them all together. You may first find it overly eerie but this is done purposefully and it truly makes the moments that bring you joy also possibly bring you to tears.
You may have questionable feelings as you begin to watch this series but put those feelings to rest and watch this anime as I cannot even fathom how you would regret it. This is a must-watch if there ever was one. It's pure magic.
