Dismal student film
2 May 2024
I make a point to see every movie and usually I'll write a positive review. Not this time. This movie failed in every way a movie can fail- from sound to zero plot to lazy non-writing to forced acting. Easily the worst I've seen since Power of the Dog but this is in the bottom five in my 45 year cinematic history. Why? No story. We don't know anything- thats called lazy writing. We see journalists scrambling to cover skirmishes across America. We don't know who is what and what is how. Thus you won't care about anyone or anything. If this is a parody of bad student films then it missed. The audience was laughing. What a complete disaster. Unnecessary forced violence and bizarre pacing. Awful. Really.

Astonishing Perfection, a legit Masterpiece
1 March 2024
Villeneuve is at the top of his game here. Technically this is an absolute masterpiece. This is perfection in every way of filmmaking- really. I see elements and influences of Star Wars, Gladiator, Mad Max, Metropolis, and Triumph of the Will. The black and white scenes in this are pure excellence. Beautifully horrifying. The last Dune won six Oscars. Same crew this time. Some may not buy the chemistry between Chalamet and Zendaya and that's fair but the cast overall is a fantasy for many of us. Seeing Brolin, Walken, Chalamet, Bardem, Skarsgard share the screen with Pugh, Butler, Zendaya etc. EPIC. This film is timeless and will be a permanent top 50.

Casey at his peak, a beautiful film
6 August 2023
Casey is mesmerizing in this. No one else could play this part either. It's a beautiful, sweet and incredibly shot film. No one overacts, and so much is said without words too. Beau Bridges at his best. Walton and Zooey go deep too. There isn't one laugh, but you won't notice. It's heavy, deep, nostalgic, and reminds us what we do for love and faith in people, and the responsibility or guilt that comes with it. The music is great too. In a summer of big movies, this small movie shines brighter. Sure to become a cult classic and win awards. Loved every minute of it. I don't give tens, ever. This deserves my ten rating. Catch it in theatres this week, but it'll grow in popularity on stream for certain.

She's cute, he's miscast
16 October 2022
Cute story but no chemistry between the mains. Formulaic and basic story which is fine, but the lead actor should never be cast in a romcom- he's good in a crime drama but doesn't have the right look for this. Plus his accent was super misplaced. Riley has way better chemistry with the ex. The mother daughter vibe was sweet though. You'll like all the actors but some mesh better with others. I'm troubled by the repeated trite lines which we've all heard before and a very awkward first kiss which was forced and then all of a sudden a montage and walk of shame. Made no sense at all. You'll be irked by the repeated use of self-help lines. But overall you won't hate it.

Amateur trite recycling
23 June 2022
The only interesting story never happened and went away instantly- the whole business with the Prime Minister. So it's the classic he said/she said with a weak bizarre and nonsensical ending. This either needed to be a whole 13 hour series or a 90 minute Hallmark Channel movie. Six 40 min episodes developed very little and you won't care or root for one character. Dismal waste of time.

Enjoyable and twisty! I was not sure what that ending was about but I rewatched it. Danggg!!! Justice Smith is weak in this but the other characters are strong. Better than most thrillers. Elements of Hitchcock and Ezsterhas. Give it a screen!

Miscast, mumbled, passionless
26 May 2022
The lead mumbles badly, you'll need subtitles, and has zero charisma, confidence or personality. What a bizarre casting. Somebody was blackmailed I guess. This is a bad recycling that has very little heart and you won't care about a single character. "Ex wife number 2" is a legit star though- and the only bright spot. And really the Lincoln is a brand new 100k SUV??? Not an 80s Town Car? Dreadful and soulless choice. This is the most boring and uninteresting David Kelley show of his career.

Not written by a player, but not bad
25 May 2022
Tennis players will watch this and immediately realize it wasn't written by a tennis player. Consult with some pros and use the real terms! Moonshot, upstroke, left, and right are not words ever spoken on a tennis court lolol. Even non-players know how silly this writing was. Also, the tennis world is super generous so it wouldn't have been tough to get some cameos.

Forced Irish jokes that fall flat and some art direction issues- like where is their gear/racquet bags etc??

It's not horrible otherwise! Solid 5.5 rounded to 6.

Typically lazy non-ending
21 May 2022
This was a rushed season and deserved an actual ending. Instead we got a lazy mishmash of no resolution for our main characters and we're left with too many questions. Not sure why writers can never end series properly. Shame on any network which allows endings like this. A solid series overall- 8/10. This ending is a 0. As lazy and thoughtless as Lost or Sopranos.

Another lazy ending
9 May 2022
Not fair to put an audience through all that and then muddy the ending. Not fair to the characters. This film deserved a strong ending and so did the characters. Extremely lazy and disappointing.

Holds up well, 36 years later

This is still a phenomenal movie. It gets better with age somehow. You won't breathe from start to finish and that's a rare feat in filmmaking. This movie has it all- it really does. I still screen it twice a year.

A long slog thru a miserable marriage
26 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This film is a looong slog thru many ups and downs. I persevered because I adore the two actors but I'm not sure they ever loved each other. He had a better spark with her friend at the beginning (a young Jacqueline Bisset).

The gag of them not having reliable transportation got old as quickly as their awful friends with their annoying toddler.

It wasn't funny in the least. We don't see or learn their backstory so we don't really know what shaped them. I felt sorry for these two actually but movies during that era were all about how things feel, and not where things are. I felt their heaviness though and didn't dislike or like them.

I think not knowing anything about them blocked me from caring. They barely even care about each other though, so we're left looking in on a ten year mishmash (the messy editing style) of people who'd rather be elsewhere. But then they realize some things. But by then you won't care if they're together or not.

Finney was actually 7 years younger than Hepburn during production but his curmudgeonly character would be enough to drive any woman away. She's too sweet for him and he doesn't deserve her.

Dismal and trite

Vomit and fecal scenes. Was this written by an 11 year old? How on earth would CZJ agree to star in this dreck? You won't care about any character in this dismal cougar flick.

Dark. Sad. Beautiful
22 March 2022
It's 90s Vegas, seedy, depressing, utterly sad and tragic. Two of the best performances in film history- Elisabeth Shue with a top 5 performance in the history of film, period. It's almost perfect, just super heavy and sad, masterfully directed and paced. I don't want to dive into too much. Watch it alone, maybe in the late afternoon on a rainy day. You won't see this film more than twice in your life- it's just that good and that memorable. I cared about these people and you will too. You'll want to know a lot more about them, but it's just a small slice of their intersecting lives.

He's All That (2021)

Solid formula piece that works
25 January 2022
Why are the ratings so low for this? I'm giving it a ten under protest. I see and review a lot of movies, usually serious, and this is a basic teen-redeeming-character plot that totally works. Same writer as 1999's original "She's All That" and yeah I'm old because RLC plays the mom in this one! And nice seeing another original cast member Matt Lillard as the principal. Anyway- this should rate as a 6.0 or higher. Great cast- fresh pretty faces, well paced, and we see some of TB's Cobra Kai moves too! It's light and fun and worth a look. Enjoy!

Season 4 is Epic!!
25 January 2022
My favorite season so far- outstanding character development and evolution. It's hard to root for everyone- but you'll do exactly that. All the stories are told and we're really seeing the layers and arc of everyone. Happy there's a season five and hopefully a season 25 too. It's so incredibly well done and full of heart too. Season 4 really nailed it! Not one weakness.

Why is this rated so low?
24 February 2021
This movie is far better than its average rating. There are many hilarious lines and scenes. It's solidly written comedy with likable characters. I've seen far worse romcoms that deserve a 4.6 average. Shocked this one doesn't average out to a 6.4. Very strange bc i usually agree with the imdb averages. Anyway, it's slow in places and the music could improve but the story and scenes are all there. Cut out the best friend's child from the whole story- but I see what the writer was trying to do there. Michael Nouri is the perfect rabbi and it's wild to see Bob Gunton not play someone evil. I have a feeling the audience wanted the two "best friends" to get together, but that would be a whole other movie, an unoriginal one. This one is way more original.

Nobody deserves a friend like Becca
23 January 2021
The first hour is a bit slow and then the fun begins and makes the whole thing worth it. Whoever Shapiro had in mind when he wrote the Becca character is someone he loves. And Kim Shaw is perfect as this person. Miles is annoying at first but then we see the layers come off and their friendship revealed. We root for them as friends and there's a flash of maybe more but you won't be left feeling dissatisfied. It reminded me of roaming days and nights living in LA in the 90s. The people you meet, the instant friendships and generosity you encounter during a day of walking. Nobody Walks in LA but they should. The last 30 mins of this movie was so much fun and wraps up nicely. Becca is the best kind of female friend that none of us guys deserve and I love the way she was written. Both of them evolve and lean on each other and definitely trust each other. Their last big scene together needed to be way tighter. The whole movie we were in their faces so pulling away for that whole shot didn't work at all but I understand wanting to see the lights and columns. But I still wanted to see their faces and body language for the "gift" she gives him. Watch this movie.

Exes Reunite to Evolve,
16 January 2021
Two depressed exes randomly meet in Nashville after not seeing each other since their breakup, many years before. They knew a small amount from FaceBook but their weekend was about catching up, enjoying living in the moment, and making the right choices and moving forward.

Clearly the writer had an ex in mind for the stunning Kristen Gutoskie. She's complicated, moody, unpredictable, and searching aimlessly for love and life. We've all known this girl- the one who's natural beauty and personality attracts everyone, but she keeps people at arms length, even those she loves. They are frustrating and loving at the same time, and will wreck your life. But you still love her for many reasons. KG plays this character perfectly and even though the main arc is about Brennan, you can't help but feel for them both.

But I root for them, not to end up together per se, but to at least be in each other's lives more. Sometimes that's all we get, both in life and in the movies. There's always hope though. What I liked about these two is that they needed each other for an evolution, not as a couple but as individuals. And it works. Nashville is a good backdrop for this type of film because it's easy to have adventures there, and the fact that both mains have a music background is irrelevant. These two love each other very much, but in different ways- and that may frustrate an unsophisticated viewer. Still, you should screen this film. It def deserves higher than its average rating.

Dragged but still cute
5 January 2021
Emma Rigby's mumbling of the southern drawl isn't her fault since the dialect coach and director failed to teach her how to enunciate. It was a laughable attempt at a Georgian accent since she was taught a Charleston accent. Many times it's impossible to understand a word she says. That's the only negative along with the lulls and pacing. It's a cute watch though and the leads definitely have a great chemistry. The supporting cast is great too. Shot on location in Madison, GA made it authentic. Also has a key vomit scene which is 100% inspired from the Stand By Me pie eating contest scene.

Heartfelt, Sad, Hopeful
13 December 2020
This is a gem of a little movie. Solid performances all around and beautifully shot with deeply sad but relatable subjects. It's not a sad movie though; it's hopeful and necessary. Dealing with adult and teen issues will make this movie appealing to a wide audience. Great seeing Julie Delpy play someone strong and kind. JK Simmons is phenomenal as always. Odeya Rush continues her great work and really the star of this is Josh Wiggins. He carries the whole film and the acting chemistry among the four leads is outstanding. This is a film that when it ends, you'll want some silence to think about it. You'll actually care about every character. You'll want them all to be happy. And even though it's shot in LA, it has no LA vibes whatsoever. This story could take place anywhere.

Classic family RomCom
9 December 2020
I'm giving it a ten because it's everything you want in a romcom- every cliche that has ever been is in this- and it completely works. Great cast, likable people and scenes, sweet sentiments. It's Mystic Pizza meets Big Fat Greek Wedding with a little Bronx Tale thrown in- Toronto style. What's not to love? Emma and Hayden even dyed their hair dark! And they actually play Italians quite well. It's the kind of movie you can see again and again and it'll never get old. My guess is this becomes more popular in the years ahead.
