Mila no Multiverso (2023)
Teen movie, in Portuguese!
This back story for Mila, is interesting even for adults. Still a story where teen don't tryst adults or adults are represented as people who don't listen, like Mila's disconnected mother. That said the universes are interesting, the operators are scary and the bad guy/gal are foreboding. I haven't watched all the episodes, yet, so no spoilers. I can't say if today's teens would enjoy this film, but it's a great opportunity to introduce young people to foreign films that aren't in their native language and get them to practice reading subtitles. I prefer this to dubbing, Dubbing gets in the way of viewing actors performances in my opinion. I have watched many films in Spanish, Mandarin and French, but only a few in Portuguese. It was fun.
I do maintain that the adults in teen movies are poorly written, lacking depth and sensitivity. Given how poorly Mila's mother treated her, why is she even looking for her? What kind of back story doesn't explain this incongruous? Maybe they will do an episode to cover it. I hope the future episodes treat adults with more respect and realism. As these Multiverses are dangerous and the operators destroy them, it's a serious topic that I believe teenagerscwould appreciate. Treating it lightly seems very unlikely.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Made me smile without knowing it
For over fifty years Star trek as been a friend. Over the years visits have felt like that, a visit from an old friend. This newest version repeats these old feelings. I found myself just smiling thru it. Especially as each episode ends, I just smile. I have enjoyed the Picard and other newer series of star trek adventures but this one felt the most like the original, the friends as I know them and it just makes me smile. Fun, even funny, complicated relationships, stories that have a meaning beyond the story itself. Not so complicated that one can just have fun. I love these.
Thanks for not feeling it necessary to recreate old technology from 1960 TV. It's fine. I love the new characters and how they interweave with old friends.
The personal feelings I have for these characters and stories has always surprised me. And as I age I am pleased to find that I am not alone. Thank you for making something that fills this unexplainable need. I am still smiling.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
Tarantino and pulp fiction move over
This isn't sleeping beauty this is a women over fifty Tarantino like film. And because there isn't any naked women fighting with their boobs that 87% male review guys didn't like it. I am embarrassed by all the female reviewers who so desperately want to belong to the male club that they trash this film. Someday they will be over fifty as well. I am sure these same men will still not respect them.
As for the film, it did need better writing. But the five experienced actresses do move with this than male stars have accomplished with bad Tarantino scripts. Yes, there is blood but on par for other contemporary Noir films. Only women understand the issues between mothers and daughters and only women understand what it means to be used by the businesses they make profitable. Men expect to be promoted, women aren't surprised when they are simply used.
I love the library! My favorite quote "it's good to have children in the Library again".
In a movies where mafia like businesses run the country and are "strangers in their own homes" because they have daughters one can't help but appreciate what that would mean to a women who still has to earn a living. Someday all the little girls who review films on this site will understand this film and come back to it. It is about to become a legend! Go home boys and girls, this is a story for grown ups.
Bright (2017)
Great Cop buddy movie
(some spoilers) What a cool mix, aliens, magic all mixed in a cop buddy movie. A corrupt sergeant, messed up fairies both large and small. Loved the ending.
Don't get why anyone wouldn't love this movie. A bunch of messed up stereotypes, yeah, but it's tough to create aliens and have people not see themselves in behind the green faces. There was honor behind those faces.
Yes, its a take off on earlier "alien as cop partner" movies but the added touch of numerous different aliens is cool.
Yes, it hits all the necessary movie cliches and that's just fine.
It's too bloody for the kids but if they are old enough for slasher movies this is way better.
The aliens aren't outer space but from earthly fairy tales. Sort of a Lord of the rings meets Harry Potter's Voldemort vs Bad Boys.
Seemed very Alien Nation at first but once the magic happens it gets much more interesting. And Will Smith does cop buddy movie better than anyone. Yes, the head count is really high. Turns out wand weilding elves were mad dangerous.
Had to watch it twice cause I missed the whole street guy prophecy bit the first time.
Watch this movie, it's fun and real escape entertainment.
Don't let some assumptions about stereotypes prevent you from seeing a way back from the bad.
Into the Forest (2015)
Stupid beyond belief
A single screw just works loose, cutting down big trees when you have existing fallen timbers. So, there are wild hogs in the NW? So black mold grows in about one month, use last gas to burn down your only shelter, a single wheel barrow for food for three. Not to mention a terrible script. Of course now that we know how stupid people are since 2020 revealed how stupid thousands of people are, it's not as unbelievable as I thought. But still a truly terrible movie.
Kansas (1988)
Why is this guy hopping a train?
No one just hops a train when their car breaks down? If he really needed to get home to the wedding why would he stop at the carnival? If this this is a rip off of a Horatio Algiers story, why is it so bad.
Mysteries of the Abandoned: Kingdom of the Vanished (2019)
The reporter can't pronounce Willamette.
If the can't get the name of a major American river right, imagine what they are messing up every where else. It Wil-lam-met, emphasis on the second syllable. Oregonians hate it when it is mispronounced. Also, the site was destroyed u. 1890 and then again in 1962, hit again in 1996 and moderately ruined several other times. Yes, the pollution was the final blow, along with the fact that newspaper just wasn't booming. This is a history program, less drama, less repetition, more facts would be nice. It's the science channel for goodness sake, we have an attention span.
The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017)
Salma Hayek gets to kick butt
Ok, its silly, and no one could survive the car wrecks or gun shots, but not as bad as fast and furious movies. And yes we know how it will end. Evil over come by good guys. The good guys aren't exactly the type of good guys we expect though and that was fun. So is the body guard the good guy or the assassin? The old Bond question sure, but done at least as well for a comedy. Significant violence but not as much blood as we have come to expect from action movies. My husband said when it was over "so, it's a love story". Yeah it is.
