Uncut Gems (2019)
Adam Sandler deserves an Oscar
I too avoid Adam Sandler films as I don't think he can act by he blows every preconception clean away with Howard Ratner (brilliant surname for a dodgy jeweller) who is the most annoying character you've ever encountered (unless you're a New Yorker). The film really gets going when he walks out of the theatre but this part doesn't fully make sense until later on as the intricate plot really starts to unwind.
Sandler really deserves an Oscar and after watching this a few days after watching the Joker I believe Sandler leaves Joaquin Phoenix trailing a long way behind in acting terms and it's true you'll need blood pressure tablets before watching this film as it's stressful and intense but you'll be smiling at Howard Ratner's chaotic behaviour if you stick it out to the end.
Best movie since Bad Times at the El Royale.
Pretty Broken (2018)
Shockingly bad.
Who is laying reviewers to leave anything more than 1 out of 10.
Slow, poor cinematography, zero humour and on and on.
Just terrible.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Joint best film of 2018 with the almighty Black Panther
Wow Wow Wow!
If you are a Tarantino fan then this film will be right up your street.
No Spoilers other than to say it starts off quirky and captivating (similar to Twin Peaks) and then it goes to super nova. I never cared much for Jeff Bridges until his excellent R.I.P.D. film and he doesn't let you down in this film too.
Black Panther has been the film to beat of 2018 however this film is BP's nearest competition.
The Shack (2017)
Terrible Religious Drivel
Wow, you have to have had a lobotomy to come anywhere close to surviving even the first 30 minutes. Sam Worthington is either religiously bat crazy or was paid a ridiculous amount of money to consider this role.
Small Town Crime (2017)
Hawkes character grows and grows on you
A great film largely by the character john Hawkes who grows on you as the story heats up.
A really enjoyable film.
Please Stand By (2017)
Heart warming film and the dog is a brilliant actor :-)
This is a great film about creative and individual minds and about ambition and hope. If you are a star trek fan you'll also love this non sci/fi film.
I'm giving away no spoilers for Trekkies :-)
Rafiki (2018)
An African Classic
Lets remember this is an African production so look beyond the occasional lack of big budget filming. This film has a great story and keeps you watching until the end which is more than can be said for many Hollywood movies. Kudos to all involved and the fact Kenyan authorities have chosen to ban it suggests they fear how good this films moral lessons actually is.
