Face/Off (1997)
Fab action movie!
I absolutely loved this film from start to finish. It has everything a really good action film needs; a fab storyline, great actors, a lot of things blowing up and a hell of a lot of action! Face/Off has everything. However, it isn't the easiest film to explain. If you've seen it, you'll understand what I mean. Castor Troy/Sean Archer Sean Archer/Castor Troy; it gets kinda confusing, but it's so good. I thought Nic Cage was tremendous in this, doing what he does best, and I thought John Travolta was fab too. This is the only film where I've ever cried at the beginning of a film, so brace yourselves for an upsetting moment if you get to see this, which you really should. It really is a first class action film from the legend that is John Woo, and I recommend it to everybody (who's 18+ of course, lol). It's just a genuinely good film, and try to ignore the obvious stuntmen in some of the scenes; you can't expect the insurance guys to cover everything, and I doubt Nic Cage and John Travolta would have wanted to do some of them! lol.
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Beautiful Film
I was initially dubious about going to see this film after I read a lot of mixed reviews. However, I am glad that I decided to just bite the bullet and go see it. This is one of the most visually stunning and entrancing films I have ever seen, with a wonderful storyline which had me clutching the edge of my seat in sheer frustration! I absolutely loved the love story that was central to the film, although I was a bit worried by the age gap. lol. It made me really want a snow cone though. I thought Zhang Ziyi was fantastic in the part of Sayuri, and she made the character very endearing and real. I am a big fan of Ken Watanabe, and it was good to see him in a part like this; the relationship was very believable and I thought they were both great. In fact, all the actors in this film did their characters justice and helped to make the film as beautiful and Oscar-worthy as it is. I just loved the story and all the sets that provided a wonderful backdrop for such an emotional, powerful tale. I recommend this to everyone! It's THAT good!
Circle of Friends (1995)
Beautiful, touching film.
I absolutely adored this film, and it is the ultimately girly flick which every girl should watch with a big group of her friends! The characters are all so likable, and the settings are wonderful. It is an utterly charming film which you can't help falling in love with. Remarkable performances from Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donnell, and I thought Alan Cumming was great in this role, because he plays nasty so well. Overall, a very beautiful film with a very genuine, lovely story at the centre. It's great! Also, the pure irishness of it just makes you want to get on the next plane to Ireland and experience its beauty and charm first hand. The whole film is simply beautiful and the cinematography is wonderful. This is a top class piece of directing and producing, and brings to life Maeve Binchy's novel perfectly.
Abril Despedaçado (2001)
One of the most beautiful films ever
I bought this film by chance to give myself a shot of culture, and wasn't really expecting it to live up to much. I had never heard of it before, but I liked the cover and the story sounded OK. However, I was in for a real treat. Beautifully shot against Brazilian landscapes and told through a cast of tremendously talented actors, especially, and most surprisingly, Rodrigo Santoro, of Love Actually fame. However, it is the little boy who really steals the show. He is fantastic and will have you reaching for the Kleenex. The beautifully told relationships between the families and the drama of the feuds just makes this film one of the best foreign films ever, and, if you can be bothered to read subtitled films, this is one you won't regret getting. It is really that good, and the cinematography is astounding. Sorry to keep talking in hyperbole, but it really is phenomenal.
Dracula 2000 (2000)
Gerard is fantastic
I watched this as a fan of Jonny Lee Miller's, but found myself coming away from it with a tremendous new liking for Scottish actor Gerard Butler (from Phantom of the Opera). He was the best thing about this film, and he proved himself to make a fantastic Dracula. You can really understand the sexy darkness of him, and it's fabulous. I also loved finding out what the film's theory about Dracula was, and believe me it's a fantastic twist, but I won't say what it is. This is a must see, if only for Gerard Butler and a new theory on Dracula. Certain party scenes are also fantastic, and the soundtrack is very modern and rocky, which really suits the film and Gerry Butler's take on Dracula. He really is very good, and by the end I found myself wanting him to bite me; he's very hypnotic when he acts, and you can really see it in his eyes, especially on the extras on the DVD. Must see, so all you women out there will understand what I mean!
Dreamcatcher (2003)
Funny!
I can't believe this has got such bad reviews. I watched it as a fan of Damian Lewis and thought it was absolutely hilarious; Damian is the best thing about it, admittedly, but he's so funny! The switching between accents is fab, and his American accent is so good I didn't recognise his voice at the beginning. Morgan Freeman is terrible! I'm shocked by his performance. However, I thought the relationships were portrayed really well and I loved Jason Lee and Thomas Jane. And who doesn't like aliens which come out of weird places? No, it's good because it's laughable. If you don't take it too seriously it's actually quite enjoyable. Also, the young actors in it are fantastic. There are so many good quotes in this. See it if you want something funny and not serious at all.
