Band of Brothers (2001)
Sensational - Best mini series ever made, best single season of a show, ever, including season 1 True Detective
This show runs through all of the positive superlatives possible. It doesn't glorify the war, it demonstrates and portrays exactly the scale of what, not only these men, but all men, women and people involved in WW2. What Spielberg and Hanks bring to the table is the story of Easy company from training at Curahee to the end of the war. Heart breaking as you see these men going through hell and then some, heart warming as you see the bonds these men form, and heart breaking some more as these bonds are torn apart in terrifying circumstances.
Damian Lewis is superb, the whole cast is superb and I even had tears during the concentration camp scenes.
It's hard to enjoy a series based on such brutal events, but this is a piece of art and deserves all of the plaudits that rain down on them much like the mortar shells rained down in Bastogne. Watching this is easily 10-12 hours or so of your life which is worth every last minute.
Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez (2020)
Interesting, particularly for a viewer who knew nothing of the case when it actually happened.
Whilst I like NFL, I'm not an avid follower and knew nothing of the Aaron Hernandez story. Like many documentaries, the approach taken does not and never will please everyone. I'm not going to offer my thoughts as to his culpability citing CTE, as an excuse, but from a viewing perspective. After all this is made to be a form of entertainment, shocking as the subject matter is.
What I liked was the depth and insight we get into his childhood, college years and short career with the Patriots and the NFL.
It left me wondering should more be done to reduce injuries etc, but then I thought that every pro athlete in their respective sports know the risks, the potential for permanent damage, both mentally and physically, and whilst CTE, is a recently diagnosed illness, it doesn't take a genius to realise that getting numerous hits to the head and concussions, isn't going to have a good effect. These athletes are paid and rewarded handsomely for their talents. It is obviously such a tragic story, with too many victims and too much hurt going on. This is a young man who seemed a joy to be around for the most part, who murdered at least one innocent man and caused immeasurable pain to those in his life and those left behind.
What this documentary does, is tell the world the story of a man with immense talent, immense demons and certainly made me think. It captured my imagination and for 3 odd hours, I was hooked and wanted to know more.
My thoughts go out to everyone affected.
Taskmaster (2015)
Original and brilliantly executed
It's a show that offers what no other show does. To a degree, it's quality comes down to the quality of the guests or competitors. Alex Horne has given birth to a brilliant concept and his rapport with Greg Davies is magical and makes the show. Each series has had at least one brilliant guest and the tasks are usually amazing and bring out amazing insights into the competitors minds, which in some cases is scary!
Overall, I love each episode and often laugh out loud on numerous occasions. I recommend this to anyone because it can appeal to anyone, regardless of age etc.
Unsolved (2018)
The absolute complete series
It came out of nowhere onto my Netflix list. I've listened to hip hop since school and lived off 2pac. It was a case of "why not"? Made in a similar style to True Detective-the first series which was mint not the second series- as it jumps through the timelines of the '97 inquiry into the biggie killing, the '07 case as a result of biggies mum pursuing justice and the timeline of B.I.G and PAC growing into the music game, the friendship and then the ultimate demise.
Incredible story, with great acting, great filming and a sensational soundtrack. Even if you hate rap and the two rappers in question, the story is worthy of anyone's attention. Watch this series and you won't be disappointed.
