The Lighthouse (2019)
Mr. Pattinson proves he is an A-List Actor
We have seen Mr. Dafoe transform into characters that are mind boggling. We believed he was really being shot (even if the squibs didn't work in "Platoon".) In "Shadow of the Vampire", it was hard to believe he was not the original actor in Nasferautu. He emerses himself deeply and so completely into each of his roles, both mentally and physically. This role is no different. He is perfect in this role.
One of the most difficult acting jobs you will ever have is to play against the strength of such an accomplished performer and Mr. Pattinson proves he is not just a teen idol but someone to taken seriously as one of our best actors. He pulls energy from his costar and does not merely reflect it but he internalizes it in his performance. I am looking forward to more of his dramatic, adult roles. With this outing, he leaves no doubt that he is in the ranks of Juaquin Phoenix, Matthew McConahey, Adam Driver and the like.
The overlooked parts of this film are the Art/Set Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, Directing, Screenplay and the Dialect coaching.
The Cinematography is in a ballpark all of its own. Using the 1.19:1 ratio, black and white film with the filters made me feel as though I was watching a film dated before "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir". The was ZERO problem with source lighting issues, which makes me honor the Director, Cinematography and Lighting Department for taking such a risk to keep the film's claustrophobic authenticity to the time period it was trying to emulate.
I wish this Film could be re-released to a wider market, since I know very few people who have seen it.
A note to Mr. Pattinson... BE SELECTIVE IN ALL SCRIPTS YOU ACCEPT FROM THIS FILM FORWARD. YOU ARE NOW BEING TAKEN SERIOUSLY, SO ONLY CHOOSE ROLES THAT WILL PROGRESS YOUR CAREER. DON'T TAKE A ROLE SIMPLY FOR MONEY... ask JODIE FOSTER.
Sun Kissed (2006)
... but I've seen worse
The beginning of any great movie is a good script. This does not have that... but I've seen worse. The cinematography is bad... but I've seen worse. The editing fuels the disjointed script... but I've seen worse. This movie is directed by its screenwriter, he knows what he wants to see but it does not connect well with an audience that is not so close to the subject matter... but I've seen worse. The main score is straight out of a 1970's porn film. The parts of the score that captioned the "eerie music" is "Jingle Bells, Jingle All The Way" set in a minor key with bad electronic instrumentation (probably for budget's sake.)... but I've heard worse. There is zero concept of the secondary character having a mental problem, only bad dreams of people he cares about getting hurt. It's not until it is spelled out, two-thirds of the way into the movie, that we find out that he suffers from a mental disease. The symptoms of the disease is not explained, full-stop. So if you don't know anything about said affliction, you won't get this disjointed film... but I've seen worse. The character that writes the book is "maybe" abducted by aliens?! This simply is bad writing, bad editing, bad continuity, bad directing and an awful waste of celluloid. The same could be said about every scene that the female character (and her acting ability, or the lack there of) could have saved more budget by not filming these sequences or at least try to save the films integrity by leaving those bad scenes on the cutting room floor... I can't say I've seen worse. The original songs in the score are contrite, the lyrics make no sense from one line of the tune to the next. What exactly was their point and what were they trying to say that enhances the film? Nothing. The best that can be said of the songs is that they did not attempt to use cliche lyrics (listen to "The Morning After" from the film "The Poseidon Adventure". Every cliche ever imagined is used in that song except "It was a dark and stormy night.") So, congratulations on using unconventional lyrics, but please try to make them coherent so that they make sense and move the story line along... I can't say I've heard worse.
The actors, in moments, show some acting ability but seem to be not quite sure how to stay properly in frame. Some of this is not their fault. The director wanted an extreme close up in some scenes, so the acting comes off as untrained in what exactly the phrase "what is my frame" means... but I've seen worse.
Esteros (2016)
Some Fires Are Not Meant To Burn Out...
Two childhood friends loose each other with time and are reunited by chance. There was a close bond between the two young boys. On their reunion as adults, the love is still there. As they go back to the old homestead where they once played, the now adults know what real love is and the one that moved away as a child is willing to give up a beautiful woman and a financially comfortable job for the love of his life that he had never stopped loving.
Reviewers say that they were separated by their parents who noticed the boys were too close but this is not the case. The father of the boy who moved away, simply accepted a job in Buenos Aires.
This is sweet, not coming of age story, but a story of when one half of a heart is reunited with its counterpart after years of separation.
Todos tenemos un muerto en el placard o un hijo en el clóset (2020)
Not as advertised...
This movie claims to be about a man who visits his home town to see his family. Yes, this does happen. But the turmoil of his boyfriend breaking up with him via Skype is only touched on sparingly with no real meaning. It's not even a plot line or a sub plot line. It's just a few sentences in the script.
What really sets his life into a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth is that his brother's ex-girlfriend is pregnant. His life's goal is to make sure his brother finds out. This is more about family dynamics than a broken gay heart. Too bad. It has potential.
Happy Endings Sleepover (2019)
Love that big galumph of mine
What a sweet, wonderful feel good film! The Co-Star is so innocently sweet that I would just like him to hold me. Our main character does a great job of delivering this performance. He reminds me of Evan Peters.
I think the song, "I've had the time of my life" belongs in this film. Sure, it has script issues but this must have been a blast to be on the sets and locations with.
The Russian... bad casting, bad writing... enough said about that character.
Don't expect any little gold men (Oscars) for this film. Just watch it with an open heart, a smile on your face and with someone you love!
Get Real (1998)
Simon Shore... you are amazing!
Congratulations to everyone involved in this film endeavor. From the casting director's, art/set decorators, location scouts, PA's and especially Simon Shore.
Rarely is there a film (not a movie... a film) that can capture so many emotions of what a 16 year old is like in his first real love and has to hide it. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me. There are so many ups and downs that I couldn't stop smiling, even through tears. It's script is not as in-depth as, say, "Call Me By Your Name", but it is just as enjoyable with a fun coming into your own story line.
And congratulations to the film's score composer, who had a very real sense of a 1970's music landscape that kept the film grounded. Also, hats off to the director and music assistant who decided to end the film with the original "You'd better Think" by the great Queen of Soul, Miss Aretha Franklin. Inspired!
I am now going to sit back down and watch it again.
Something Like Summer (2017)
it's a MUSICAL!!!
I read the description on Prime Video and rented it. It said NOTHING about being a musical. If I wanted to watch GLEE, I would have rented GLEE.
And if you have the nerve to use "Killing Me Softly", it should be the original by Roberta Flack!!!
I hate feeling so deceived. All of the normal acting in the non-musical scenes seem choreographed. That's probably because the cinematographer is also the director. When there is a "fight" scene, I'm expecting them to break into West Side Story.
I feel robbed and I want my money back!!
Beach Rats (2017)
Like an Unfinished Symphony
From a script prospective, this starts out strong. It has some very nice character development, for some characters. Others, not so much.
The short friend of the group with the elvish ears need not have been in this film at all. The dying father had a role with a purpose. At the end, the short friend runs away from the action with no purpose for any of his actions.
The film ties up the arching relationship between the star, his "girlfriend" and his larger friends. We know their purpose and the struggle of the Star of the film.
But the film could have gone in so many directions, such as telling his mother about his feelings for men. This could have given the given such a deeper understanding between son and mother, giving the mother a chance to have a more substantial story line. Dealing more with the drug problem when it is tapped upon with his mother. (Same reasons apply. Basically, the role of the mother was robbed of whatever depth and meaning of their relationship that could have been fitting for such a strong actress.)
At the end, was he going to drown himself where his friends had beat up the young gay man for a little bit a weed? Could he have ran to his mother's arms and professed his "Father complex", thus his attraction to older men? This would have lent to the story line of the mother/son bonding over the death of a loved member of the family. None of this happened.
With a few more re-writes and not rushing to do the obligatory bookends (fireworks at the beginning and ending), these problems could have been fixed with about the same amount of budget the film had... and maybe a fresh pair of eyes to read the script for further development and structure.
