Secret Society of Second-Born Royals (2020)
Potential, but way too many plot holes.
It's not the best movie I've seen, but it's definitely not the worst. There's just a lot of plot holes and issues in the execution of the movie. The premise is super interesting and has a ton of potential, but it also raises a huge question for me as a history nerd: how did this second born gene work back when inheritance was necessarily based on birth order. Historically, there are a bunch of examples where the first born isn't the first in line: Queen Victoria's children, Tzar Nicholas's children, Henry VIII's children. All of them had girls before they had boys, so what does that mean for the gene? Did the boys get the gene even though they were first in line? Does the gene show up when there are more than 2 siblings?
Also, the plot twist was so obvious. Anyone with a brain could have realized one of the second borns was going to be evil, and yet Disney still expected us to be surprised by it. Finally, there's the issue of the teenagers. Sam is supposed to be 15, as are the other main characters. They don't look like 15-year-olds. They look like they could be 17-18, probably because the actors are around that age. I wouldn't have thought of it as an issue, except there's a line that states Sam is 15. If it weren't for that line, I would have assumed she was older, closer in age to her sister. But then, Hollywood has a history of casting adults as teenagers, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
The Haunted Mansion (2003)
I came for the ride references.
Okay, so I just watched this, and it wasn't terrible. For me, the highlight was the ride references, but the story was well told, if a bit cheesy (though what happened with the ending? That was the flimsiest plot twist ever!). The cast was good, and the special effects have held up for the most part. Not to mention it still freaked me out a tiny bit (I don't do horror movies). It's not the best movie I've ever seen, but it's good for what it is.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Spider-Man goes on vacation (sort of).
First of all, it was amazing. It was funny, serious, sad, and everything else a good movie should be. I loved the awkwardness of Peter, especially around MJ (though how did Ned get a girlfriend first? He's Ned!) I loved the special effects. I liked that Tony left Peter something. I liked how Peter idiotically gave them to the villian because he didn't know better (great job, Parker). It was in no way the best movie I've seen, but it was fun and it was entertaining. The credits scenes were good - I liked the second one better. The first one set up another Spider-Man, no surprise, and it introduced J. Jonah Jameson, who is still played by JK Simmons. Now, personally I don't like Jameson. I find him obnoxious, and I hate that he smears Spider-Man's reputation, but I get that he's popular and from the comics that I haven't read. I'm not going to say anything about the second one aside from stay for it. It's funnier and Talos from Captain Marvel might show up.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Spidey's emo phase
I will say that I'm writing this as I'm watching the movie, but it's really not good in my opinion. I watched the first one cause I thought "it's Spiderman, it Tobey Miguiere, how bad can it be." I watch it and I think "could be worse, he's a bit of a bland actor" but I still watch the second. I really only watched this one to complete the series but then I spend the whole time groaning at Peter 1) failing to be a decent human being for MJ, 2) being incredibly edgy, and 3) wondering when Venom's going to show up because I came to this movie for Venom vs Spidey, not because I wanted to see Peter go through an emo phase while Harry and MJ both have the worst time ever. I'd suggest that if you want a good movie, watch Homecoming with Tom Holland.
His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz (1914)
A Classic Wizard of Oz
As a child, I adored anything Wizard of Oz. When the 70th anniversary collection came out, I got it and discovered this movie, which I immediately fell in love with. The movie is well acted, and while the special effects are cheesy, they are amazing for the time. I'd highly recommend watching it.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Beautiful, Intricate, and Confusing
As a Harry Potter fan, I went in expecting to love the film, and while I do admit it was excellent (specifically Jude Law as Dumbledore, the relationship with Newt and Tina, and all the new magical creatures), it left me with a ton of questions and new ideas that contradict some of my previous Potter knowledge. Who is Credence? Is he a Dumbledore like Grindelwald said, or his he someone else? Why would Queenie betray her sister and boyfriend by joining Grindelwald? Is Queenie's switch permanent? Can we please learn more about Nagini? But overall, J. K. Rowling and David Yates have created another amazing Potter film.
