A wise reasoning and a red flag for a certain crowd.
27 January 2019
This movie is perfectly well acted and well produced in almost every aspect. It portrays the theme of blindness surprisingly subtle and more realistic then most movies. It doesn't have the "I iron my pancakes"-flatness that is often found within the genre. So why do so many people still hate it?

--- : It makes too many, too valid points that are pro-empathy. Wich is unusual for a most horror movies. A large subdivision of the horror crowd really hates that. It provides near impenetrable reasons, that egoistic "preserve-myself-and-my-family-and-defend-against-parasites" behavior falls short in front of the multitude a threats that require different kinds of "evolutionary fitness". Even in an apocalyptic situation. A movie arguing so well, that a live worth living, doesn't only include empathy as a core value, but actually REQUIRES it for the survival, makes them feel guilty. So they dismiss it. After all, believing that "helping" is "something weak and stupid people do, to preserve themselves" is how they manage to live with themselves. When they're faced with a valid point of how altruism is a successful way of survival, they run out of "weak" or "soft" people to blame. So they get spiteful.

Actually really good.
25 November 2013
I'm voting this up because it's the best horror movies, I've seen in a long time... i guess the reason it gets rated down is because, it is actually disturbing in a way that is neither scary, heavily disgusting or confusing. It really makes you sick with rage. It actually depicts an unrealistic situation, somehow realistic. Not too subtle, not too styled.

It depicts, how a manipulator would realistically degraded and dehumanize people step by step, and infects the watcher with a superficial disgust towards humanity. It's hard to bare but it may be something that can really get you thinking - how to avoid becoming cynical like that?

I guess that's why some people really hate it - it throws a lot into question: No happy ending, no good guys, no American dream, and a lot of people today get paranoid, every time the villain is a rich guy and the message of a movie isn't "you can do it, if you try" but "live is unfair, try all you like".

The actors aren't prefect, but they're GOOD and FAR above average, so is the directing. Mr. Guesthost-rich-guy, gives the most realistic depiction of a pathological psychopath I've seen in a long time, tho a big part about that might be the writing. The playful aggression, the way he talks friendly, like always referring to slightly stupid children, the "minding your manners" while destroying people, the nasty backhand insults that come out as compliments.

Try too hard.
6 June 2013
I rate this movies low because it just didn't deliver what was promised. It's not really funny, or scary but mostly: Confusing. It gets annoying.

If you put a ton of somewhat deep references into a few hours of time, and give it a title appealing to confused young adults ---> you can be surethey start searching for a deeper meaning. That's a good thing I believe and I think that's what this movie is doing. --- However, it's trying to be a "cult" movie and it's trying way too hard. We always search for meaning, for connections, for causality - that's just how the human mind works. That's the reason entirely pointless things often seem to have a deeper meaning, if they're put into focus.

But what does this one mean? The topics touched are mostly shallow, so it might not have a meaning at all. Or at least not one that could possibly be accurately deciphered by anybody but the writer himself.

The meaning originates inside the viewers head, which is a great inspiring thing, i believe. However this ones getting way to close to just creating paranoia.

What is this supposed to be? A satire on teenage movies? More like: Tons of references in a blender. Just because something is fast, and uses tons of complicated references doesn't make it smart. Is this supposed to make the viewer think deeply about questions like: Why are the 80s the new 90s? I think it's lacking depth and tries to make up for that by being cryptic.

----> The hard, and the smart thing is: Making a complicated message easy to understand. Giving a surprising but at the same time logical explanation is. Inspiring deep questions. This one is just being cryptic and trying too hard.

Beyond bad.

One good movie (Suspiria) and everybody starts adoring anything the guy does...

If you wanna spend a boring, painful, pointless evening it might be a good idea to suffer through this movie. Rarely have i ever seen such masses of implausible, unlikely but story-convenient plot twists. Amazingly the movie somehow still manages to be predictable, by being cliché... To add to box-office and stupidity they even put in a monkey. The dialog is full of pointless mid sentence breaks. You get the feeling they were trying to stretch the movie or that the actors forgot their lines. Even worse often the dialog is simply pointless, unnecessary for the characters and the storyline: "Yes","No","YES","NO","YES","OK, OK YES".

However, the worst thing of all for me was the incredibly stupid and unlikely behavior of the main character... NOBODY, no matter how scared, could possibly acted this stupid... i mean were used to horror-movie characters acting silly, but this was just too much. I mean, first the girl actually swallows pills that she declaredly suspects to be dangerous. She does so, ALONE in locked bathroom where she could have easily just flushed them or climbed out the window. Instead she barfs them out again shouting "POISON", "POISON". Then she leaves the bathroom and tries to call her attorney with the person who poisoned her standing right next to the phone... TOO MUCH.

It's always sad when people lower a movie just because its a remake. This is a brilliant and smart modernization of the 1971 movie that stays true to the initial story and message. There is NOTHING wrong with any of the acting.

-Can't be compared to "insert any old accomplished actor"- That's the typical boring argument made on any remake and it lacks logic even in its-self. If this one would have been made first, people would argue exactly the same way. The only thing you could really criticize, is that making a remake is close enough to taking somebody else's work and selling it as your own. But nobody does that.

unbareable...
18 July 2012
If you wanna suffer through days of brain-dead plot-holes obnoxiously annoying characters and writing that seems to hint arrogance in its-self, go on and watch this... the only good thing about this i can possibly find is the beautiful, but then again very typical anime art that reminds me a lot of D.Grey-man but lacks that series variety...

If you wanna watch a tired master-slave philosophy, clumsily disguised sadomasochism and hints to pedophilia have fun. There are amazing anime series and its hard to say, how they turn out in the end, since many series tend to change drastically over their course. But after now 12 episodes i can't take anymore of this nonsense. Weak and childish humor mixed with "blend-away-gore" which worsens this desperate attempt to make something that is dull and mainstream look somehow classy... It's a big mass of nobility pandering for little princesses, who replaced pink for black in hopes of sticking out of the crowd just the same way... Tim Burton á la stupid.

Warning: Spoilers
highest, universal, everlasting accomplishment in unbearably stupid dialog...

the conversations between my cat and the rumbling dishwasher are an amazing intellectual, realistic and interesting piece of high literature compared to what some of the annoying characters in this movie abuse the English language for...

fun fact: this movie would actually be sort of above average, if it weren't for all those made-up punch lines, created for 14 year all boys that aren't allowed to watch the movie... It's not realistic, it's not smart and i wouldn't care at all, neither be expecting any of that... but those misguided attempts of being funny, cool or even romantic were just way too much...

Dream House (2011)

Massivly underrated.
8 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is definitely an enjoyable movie. It's confusing at parts and not very realistic, but the story is decent, the acting is actually amazing and the dialogs are realistic.

I think i know why do people rate it so low... Just check the reviews: Many people saying: "This was so predicable". It' sort of a typical mystery movie. I agree so far: Many parts of the story aren't new at all. However, compared it to typical blockbusters example: "Spiderman 3", this story is still rather "unpredictable".

Now, people don't really like being surprised. Ask anybody working in television. Look at any sitcom, soap opera... It's a problem of cognitive balance: Extraordinary things break our flow and force us to think even if it's about a totally pointless issue. We tend to avoid that.

I think it should be at 7 stars and believe it will be there overtime. As more mature reviews come in through the TV audience, the rating will turn average which would be more justified, considering that real boulder-crap gets 6 to 7 stars easily. This is movie is at least decent, even if you don't like the story.

Spoiler: Another obvious issue: You'd intuitively want the institutionalized psycho to be the bad guy, and that prolly would have been more realistic. However it turns out differently. That is pretty much the main twist in this movie. I know people hate that. It's sort of preachy. A lá "Not everything is what it looks like" and that messages been send many many times, so people get annoyed =) thanx for reading

Dogville (2003)

sorry...
19 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
As well made as it may be, the message of this movie gets down right stupid if you break it down to its core... What have we got here? I sum up the story: A girl who ran away from "some gangsters" gets taken in by some mountain town folk. The townspeople are nice at first but after some time, they become more and more abusive until a ridiculously disgusting degree is reached. They end up calling the gangsters to get rid of the girl, but it turns out she is the daughter of some mafiaboss and the whole town gets machinegunned and burnt preferably in a horrible fashion.

Besides the fact that this story is incredibly unrealistic altogether and she prolly could have left the village at any point, whats happening is displayed in a context of an extremely misunderstood Christian-moral of forgiveness and punishment... The whole town is incredibly judgemental from the start, and as friendly and understanding as the girl maybe her personality would shine in a very different light if the viewer knew her background story from the start...

The point in Christian religion is less "forgiveness" and a lot more "not judging" people... There isn't anything arrogant about "not judging people" that because what it essentially means is: "I wont judge other people, cause i know i will always be just biased as they are." Aka: my opinion is NOT better than anybody elses. Which is the absolute opposite of arrogance. NOT imposing your judgement on anybody else is whats important, its the whole point. When Miss "my dads a gangsterboss" in the end "morally" decides to shoot everybody in the town she IS judging them by her VERY own standards and not a bit better then they were.

Did the author really think the world we live in is so full of forgiveness that he needed to teach a lesson like that to the earth????? An eye for an eye? If we'd live by that standard nobody would be alive because the big problem in everybodys nature is, that we tend to be biased towards our own judgement which again and again results in situations where two partys are committing horrible crimes because they each are convinced of their ultimate rightfullness.

Somebody must have had some really good, rich friends to get a 3 million budget for this nonsense... the stories are downright stupid, its almost unbearable... Any kids-vampire-banana story is more realistic than accidentally chopping of somebodies head at a surprise birthday party, killer-knife-hobos or dogs that can see but not smell around corners... Somehow the writers managed to make EVERY character in this movie a massive moron. They had to because if anybody ever acted smart all those stories would have ended after 2 minutes with somebody simply walking, running or driving away... The framework story is worse. Please don't employ the word psychology if you no NOTHING about it. The "professor" is plain ridiculous... Bad actors repeating over and over "oh it's so scary", "aaaah i'm so afraid" is annoying but not creepy... And ending with "oops it was all a dream" is possibly the worst thing you can do with an anthology movie.

Monsters (2010)
9/10
Deserves so much better
28 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The main reason this is getting bad reviews is that it doesn't deliver what people expect... well, i guess: "Monsters" makes you expect action and instead you get something slow and deep. I do think this is a rare gem of the horror genre because it actually tries to make a point.

That point is well made, i'd say, but in order to deliver it, the movie has to be surprising... You'll find a lot of analogies about prejudice and most of all the not really new theme of: "things-aren't-always-what-they-seem".

For a message like that to get through, you'll have to mislead the viewer first. Sadly most people seem to lack the self-esteem to admit their misjudgment. Well maybe many people plain don't understand it, since it ends really vague. Or maybe people just get angry if they don't get what they want =)

Thanks to the odd combination of dark-horror and deep-love-story it pretty much misses both big audiences. For the love-story-puppy-dog-people it won't be pink enough and the horror fans are gonna be disappointed cause it is hardly bloody or cruel and it doesn't have a superhero-guy who's saving the world by blowing up a part of it. Leaves a very small crowd that can handle both.

NOT scary.
9 November 2009
...the acting is so damn bad i don't know how anybody actually could consider this crap scary or actually "good". I mean not only the acting is unfunny and puppet-like: These people - what they say... how they talk... it's just obviously not real, u feel it in every word they spit out... Besides, it just looks like a "blair witch project"-copy with a sucky, sucky story and idiots instead of students.

For these documentary-style-horrors they should at least try to be realistic... and the built-in "let's-put-something-in-for-the-girlies"-boyfriend-problems destroyed any doubts on my side that this is bogus...

also: THAT GIRL... OMG yeah screaming and screaming "it's all soooo scary" but staying in the danger-zone all the time. She's even using the camera she's supposed to fear so much... BINGO. What else would somebody scared to death do? and the guy.. "uga buga f*ck you"-style-character. lovely.

This is a big ugly pointless case of stupid ninja marketing. Don't watch it... even IMDb here is full of obviously sponsored comments that read like advertising and i'm pretty sure that's just what they are. There are some scary movies that came out lately... this one is boring at best. More annoying. It just gives u a really good "Who ever made this thinks I'm an idiot who is supposed to believe this bogus"-feeling...

90 minutes of "buhuuhuuu" "something's wrong" "i'm so scared" and "don't go" with a lot of camera shaking. Bad 1990-webcam-qualitly in high definition. Thanks for wasting my time.

What about John?
23 August 2009
this movie is a great example of how being illogic can be mistaken for being original... i mean if u ignore all the crazy stuff which makes the film interesting and get down to the plot, you'll see a very silly made-up love-story about a bunch of people who don't care about each others privacy, or anybodies. There's nothing new about the idea of seeing the world through somebody elses eyes or taking over somebodies body... i mean that's horror movie stuff if u want to name it.

The looks and dialogs of the movie are definitely unusual but it still doesn't feel really original to me - that's mostly because the oddness really gets shoved "in your face" it's supposed to be really weird and somewhat pointless and u can feel it.

All the topics that it could have touched are instead totally ignored or even made fun of. I mean this could have been about voyeurism, identity so many philosophical ideas... instead it is plain about: "Beeing John Malcovic" while at the same time pretty much ignoring who the real John Malcovic actually is... i mean he's the one i feel with most of the time, his life being destructed in a horrible way. The others being ignorant about the person they're taking over were simply boring to me.

Of course there is no denying that this is a movie which provides a different point of view and can make people wonder... but i'm afraid it's just too flat to really make somebody think...

Big red buttons
12 August 2009
This ridiculous movie will infect trillions of minds with utter dullness. The made-up, unauthentic, implausible story turns into a big black plot hole eating up all the sense in the universe and turning the world into a Hamburger. Worst of all the bogus we are supposed to believe here tries to disguise its-self as complicated and smart. You can still see it all coming miles away. Oooops there's Arnie who somehow didn't get a machine-gun and a grenade-launcher like the rest of the killing machines so our hero has to be punched to death in 30 action-filled minutes (he survives of course) - - - - - Oops the good-guy accidentally runs into a big nuclear bomb the super-smart mega-computer forgot in the middle of its vulnerable base. Why not just a big red button: End the movie. Blow up the place

"Statistics say people need to use the toilet after 100 minutes so let's end the movie now." And by the way... a computer wouldn't be cynic or annoyed wouldn't it???? And when it is predicting a whole series of totally random events for days into the future at one time and then fails to kill 1 little man for half the movie that doesn't make too much sense either... but i'm sure there'll be an even more smart, made-up, twisted plot-hole to explain all this to us in the next pointless terminator movie.

Well it's not as bad as the over-length Arnie-Governator-Advertising-Campaign part 3 but that doesn't help too much.

Unbearble
29 June 2009
It's so disturbing when people talking idiotic unscientific crap are supposed to be super-intelligent professors or genius villains... a lot of stereotype cuddly characters are fighting against something so mysterious you can be sure it will never really explained... it's almost creepy how incredibly smart some X-Files episodes are compared to this nonsense.

Many bad actors doing a great job being impossible to believe, made-up characters.

How can u possibly work for the FBI while being this stupid? It just doesn't make sense... it might be that the story is just full of these brainless plot-holes so that they can make the old boring story seem new. Please don't watch this.

get killed, get happy
3 May 2009
Totally illogic. If you got any common sense it will be impossible to even slightly believe in the crappy story. This splatter soaked Orgy is so busy making up ridiculous ugly twists the characters can't be taken seriously anymore. None of them is really interesting anyways however. You start to expect anything coming up to fill the next plot hole and thats when it gets really boring. I mean what tension can there be if u already know, that in the end you're just gonna want to puke.

In a covert way the film makers slips in some nazi-ideology. I'm not sure if they were even aware of it, but i'm sure the teenagers who watch this won't get it. And some might think trying to kill someone will make him/her feel more alive instead of traumatizing him/her for life...

How to beat your children into good shape.
28 December 2008
Children might actually like this - yes, cause its full of children and full of baby-jokes... but please don't make your poor kids watch this... I mean honestly: Magical authoritarian force-slapping isn't the way to make a kid turn out good. The overcharged "what a wonderful moment"-music makes things even worse. It gets louder the more unrealistic and ridiculous the movie becomes. And it reaches levels of pointlessness that i didn't even know about. The characters are ink-horn and mostly unbearable.

If you believe in hitting your children or if you think it would be wise to tie them onto their beds and feed em oil: Then you might enjoy this movie. Also then you hopefully don't have kids.

Warning: Spoilers
The few parts where this movie is somehow mildly funny are totally outdominated by the fact that it is criminally unrealistic. If you get the idea that what happens in this plot is therapy, or might actually work as a therapy, you're out of your mind... if anything this would be the best way to drive somebody completely insane. The only reason this illogic, unfunny, pointless, storyless crap sometimes gets good criticism is the fact that there are some good actors in it... It's just a really cheap idea, not even a new one, splattered across way too much time and resulting in a ridiculous, totally made-up ending that is impossible to believe if you got some sort of a brain...

Most wonderful movie I've seen in years
3 November 2008
Beautifully shows the loving soul a person desperately trying to be good owns. It was painful to watch this fantastic movie and i haven't cried so hard in years i believe. You will see a person who is willing to give any sacrifice break down. Rejected for trying his very best. Hated for love. The ending feels so divine :-) To forgive is what the bible tells. Not to judge. Isn't God the one who will love you through all your sins. God is said to be love not fear. It's kind of sad that a movie as good as this gets such a low ranking. I guess it's hard to understand. I can only hope some day people will be able to open their hearts for the love of others.

Blood and Stupid =)
5 June 2007
wow i'm amazed =) so much crap in so little time, so many idiots on such a small screen =) if this movie was made by anyone else it would have gotten the 4 to 5 stars a common horror movie with a poor story usually scores, but -heyo- one name of FAME and the monkeys come screaming "GREAT" --- it really isn't... no, its nothing special or in anyway original... the only thing special about it, is that it'll be overrated like all the other bloodfilled effectshows Tarantino did. This is satisfying the deep and neverending lust for sensation which exists in all of us. All you need to make a film like this is money... not talent.

It does make sense.
18 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Kinda sad that nobody seems to really get this movie XD it does make a lot of sense - I'd even say its the clear try of making some sort of "realistic" Vampire Story: Spoiler: My Explanation... The Daughter was chosen right from her birth since it was very troublesome and it was clear that her mother would have a hard time raising that child, since she wanted abortion actually... the daughter wasn't really supposed to be alive... she was missing out a lot of love cause her mother had such a hard time trying to manage herself... in that way the girl always was some sort of "undead" ---> thats why she was chosen by the Vampire Figure called "The Father" to become a Vampire =) it is very necessary that the mother is some sort of mad, because of that she is an easy victim - shes colleric hysteric and tends to panic - nobody believes her - and it makes the people close to her easily convincable too...

in the end when the weird blade suddenly hangs on the mirror in the car it seems clear to me, that the daughter wasn't supposed to be killed =P but to be made a vampire... i think its a very atmospheric and good film, not really creepy, but sort of deep and not superficial at all.
