The robots (Synths) achieve consciousness and suffer at the hands of the Humans who cannot accept the synths as equals. It's a direct allegory of slavery and civil rights in the US. Mia and Max choose to resist the oppression through non violence (like MLK). Niska and Anatole however favor a violent resistance (Like Malcolm X). Max leads the synths that are restricted to an abandoned warehouse. This is a parallel to Indians being removed from white mans society and confined in reservations.
Laura defends the Synths legally and tries to gain equality for them. Laura is mistreated by her fellow humans as if she had sided with an enemy.
Many commentators here are critical the series is dark and portrays humans as bigoted. But isn't that how we have acted throughout history, persecuting others simply because they appear to be "different'.
As humans we are inhuman when we act in a tribal fashion. Who are the most humane of all? The humans or the synths?
When AI life forms come to exist, we will most likely attack them as a threat to our humanity.
