Archie (2023)
Cary Grant from the perspective of Dyan Cannon
I love Cary Grant, and it pained me to see this miniseries showcasing the flaws of Cary Grant's personality within his relationship with Cannon. Also, the actor who plays Cary Grant wore way too much orange sun tan makeup and it was distracting. I know Cary Grant is a screen legend and worked so hard to build his career but this miniseries reveals the trivialities of a three year marriage, some of his younger years, his relationships with his parents, and not enough of the earlier years such as when Cary Grant was making a name for himself. If we saw Cary Grant in his twenties, rather than Dyan Cannon starting her career, it would have been more interesting.
Troy: Fall of a City (2018)
Very accurate to the Iliad with creative imaginative storytelling
I was happy to find this series written by David Farr. I studied Greek mythology over 30 years ago. I really enjoyed the requisite readings of the Iliad and the Odyssey! The Greek Goddesses: Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite's silly game of having a shepherd choose which one of them is the most beautiful by giving the chosen the golden apple. Thus, the Gods instigating the beginning of a war, knowingly playing with an ignorant shepherd, Paris, unknown to himself is really Prince Alexander of Troy. Paris will be given the most beautiful girl in the world should he give the golden apple to Aphrodite. Although, Paris could have had Athena by his side always if he chose her or become the most powerful man should he haven chosen Hera. This series exemplified what a simplistic and foolish individual the core of Paris' ambitions. This series also portrayed Helen as a selfish, prideful, hedonistic, secretive and willing to see everyone die and suffer all because she chose to remain in Troy. Paris was also stupid but at least filled guilt....although with Aphrodite's protection, he could not even kill himself.
Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale (2024)
How to keep friends and earn respect
This series is more about how to refrain from giving what one can. Just as a billionaire doesn't give his or her money to anyone needing money. In the idyllic world, what a wonderful service, if one can go to someone and receive whatever one wishes for. Sanctuary is shown as picture perfect with beautiful people and families living in an abundance. What if something is so terrible to a person who is narcissistic and can't get their way? That person will blame the easiest person to blame. Although, Sarah is a people pleaser and loves to give to her friends and clientele what they want. Sarah bends the magic rules and sometimes will change outcomes for the Sanctuary community. Sarah wants to please so much, she bends rules too much and pays the price. In our own society, without magic, it is important to allow people to figure out their own path, be a friend, but allow friends to work towards their path in life. This series shows what happens should someone intervene with what one side desires. The law of nature and life becomes off balance. Sarah had the only loving and good intentions to her community but should she have the power to steer anyone's child, partner, or even oneself?
Expats (2023)
Always more interesting with Nicole Kidman
Expats caught my eye because I love Nicole Kidman! She is casted as Margaret, a wife, and a mother of three kids. The father, Margaret's husband, Clark has an affluent job in Hong Kong where the family has been living for a while. Although Margaret has put her career on hold while living in Hong Kong. Her third child, Gus, super cute but very active and vocal has tested Margaret as a mom. Gus has had a nanny, Essie, since he was born and he sometimes prefers his nanny over the mom. I think Margaret doesn't handle the situation very well because she feels slighted but needs the help from Essie. " Essie is family " Margaret reminds herself.
At some party, Margaret meets another young woman, Mercy, 24 years old and in between jobs who offers to help her with the kids anytime. Shortly, Margaret contacts Mercy to meet her and the kids for dinner and shopping afterwards. However Mercy is a stranger that the family barely knows, yet after dinner, Margaret trusts her, someone she barely knows to take her sons and walk around in the crowded marketplace. While Margaret shops with her daughter. Of course, Mercy is distracted, text messaging and Gus slips from her sight in an instant.
Before this happens,Margaret is clearly disenchanted with her role as a mom, she loses her temper with Gus and even forces Gus to stay outside the door of their apartment for punishment. Margaret even confides to one of her friends, during her pregnancy with Gus, that she kept thinking "I don't want another child." So it almost seems she would feel extra guilty leading up to Gus' disappearance.
After two episodes in this series, I'm looking forward to the episodes to come. The series drew me in because of the interesting character development and relationships.
The Nest (2020)
I felt for the horse...most of all
How can any one make his or her family move locations 4 times within a 10- year timeframe? Let alone move overseas with a horse? That poor horse portrayed the stress and trauma of the downfall of the parents. Moving requires the kids to be uprooted, costly, change of schools, making new friends, etc. As the mom, she could have said to her husband, "go to London and figure out your plan." But we wouldn't have this movie then. The mom never seemed to be at home with kids nor had her own career; yet she hid her own money for her own emergencies knowing that her husband is an over spender and superficial hedonistic possibly narcissistic delusional person pretending to be rich while drowning in debt:. I think, his wife, Allison is equally at fault for agreeing to move the 4th time while pretending her husband, Rory doesn't have a problem. Hello, did she not live with this guy for the past 15 years (having a teenage daughter and 10 year old). I know some jobs like the military and many other job require household moves but that would all be expected already and paid for by those organizations.
Above Suspicion (2009)
Binge watchable!
I love both leads and the rest of the characters were great! I want to read the books after seeing the series. I do agree with some of the reviews regarding Anna Travis played by Kelly Reilly that her work outfits could look more professional. The white tank tops, white puffy top, white button down shirts all were too tight and why white everyday? Normal office workers or normal people can't keep white clothes spot free. Also her hair had to be sexy all the time with huge bangs as well as the tousled hair look. Kelly is model thin without the usual Detective Inspector character flaws which enriches a character where we can connect more to the character as a human being.
Blonde (2022)
Uneasy to Watch but Glued to The Reality of a Superstar
Ana is superb! And super convincing as Norma Jean/ Marilyn. I am happy that she is receiving recognition for her performance ....from most of the reviews I have read. I have always known that Norma Jean's life was tragic but did not know the many incidents of her life that led to her sadness. She was abused physically, mentally, emotionally throughout her childhood and the abuse just continued throughout out her adulthood to add numerous counts of sexual assaults/rapes and no one taking care of her as a respectable human-being. Such as The studio paying her $500 a week for "Gentlemen PreferBlondes"....knowing that the other lead actress was receiving $100K for the film. To add Joe DiMaggio beating the crap out of her ! Norma Jean was just a sweet gal who had a huge heart but never met anyone that could truly respect and look out for her. I totally have changed my views on JFK but I know that people in politics and power most likely are still narcissistic people who will grasp for anything they can get.
Craith (2018)
Complex Characters and Dismal Scenery
Really engrossing, I was hooked and wanted to find out more about each person as the story kept unraveling. The scenery was beautiful although felt cold and dreary along with the murders. I absolutely love British series!
The Essex Serpent (2022)
Dark and Claire Danes Orange Hair color was distracting
The best cast: Clemence Posey, Tom Hiddleston, Claire Danes , what's not to love? The very slow, dark, grim story made this series very difficult to watch. I usually love this genre of a story, but after 2 episodes; was unable to continue....never got hooked on the story line or any of the characters. A shame because I will usually watch anything that these are starring in. Oh yeah, I wonder why, Claire Danes had to dye her hair for this period. ...I don't think she was more attractive for this look.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Worst kind of liar and criminal
Anna is a sociopath without empathy. A narcissist, out for her own selfish gain. In reality we all meet people who have bit of her personality. She totally ripped off so many people and got away with it! It is so difficult to put away these kind of criminals because they are so manipulative and conniving. It's a shame she is so famous for these traits. People can make money off of this kind of criminal and she is too intelligent for anyone to ignore her. Anyway people love to watch this kind of drama because it is so addictive to watch for someone get away with this behavior and relish this criminal's down fall. However...these people cause discord and the audience can't get enough.
Le Monstre (2019)
Exasperatingly difficult to watch
As an 18 year old girl who has everything. Sophie has the most loving, supportive, wealthy, and extremely patient family. Sophie is beautiful, smart, and able to get any thing she wants. Yet, she pursues a foreign looking guy she sights at the bar. She even aggressively tells this guy's girlfriend to "get lost". For whatever reason, Sophie needs this foreigner's love even if she has to betray her family; be physically & emotionally abused; forced marriage; her husband telling his friends to rape her; and yet this girl continues to be the martyr and stays with the most manipulative & violent husband. It's disgusting!
The Undoing (2020)
Quality HBO miniseries
It's always comforting to watch the life of rich, successful, and beautiful people who seem to have everything. This is when I think to myself, wait, everything seems too perfect. Perfect marriage, perfect child, perfect husband and wife. So, at first, I know that nothing can be that perfect.
Elena, the gorgeous mystery lady who is obsessed over Grace, I want to know why. The series kept drawing me in. Each character, Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman are so easy to watch. This is an HBO miniseries that doesn't waste your time.
The Assistant (2019)
How to behave like a Doormat
This movie is about life in a dog eat dog world. The lead actress was in all of the scenes portraying her devoted efforts to her work. She was so young and bright but without the well-rounded life that a early twenty something would have. No social life, no outside interests, no conversation skills, and without any self-interests exemplified. The dedication to her work was not the concern but how she completely lost herself at work and watching her behave as a mousy, subservient, pitiful, Bullied, and the loneliest person was disconcerting. Very disturbing to watch and hard to get through this movie.
Hanna (2011)
So good!
Acting is superb! All star cast. Watched it for a second time and just as good!
Hanna (2019)
This series should be called - Hanna: the emotional teenage years
The 2011 Hanna is a super cool kid! Loved her dad. This series turns Hanna to a more temperamental Neurotic teenager who rebels against her father with lots of drama. The tables turn where she questions her father Erik as a possible villain and the real villain Marissa to a less evil character. Possibly to squeeze more episodes for this series... don't know. It was exasperating to watch Erik and his guys having hours of conversations with Marissa while they had captured her instead of killing her off...of course she had to live for this series to continue.
Outlander (2014)
Nauseating
The first few episodes were watchable. Then the series began to focus too much on Claire's unrealistically perfect ways. She's a healer, she's a dress designer, the historian who knows everything, the one to come up with all the ideas, she's everyone's best friend, she's everything anyone can imagine including the Most whiny skinniest pregnant lady anyone would want to be. Anyone who is pregnant knows how tired we get and need to eat for goodness sakes. How dare she intervene on her husband's revenge of his obscene experience of being raped repeatedly for dead By a look alike of her other husband!! Then she wasted all of her energy to yell at Jamie for dueling Him by straining herself to be there and then loses the baby. How selfish she was to think only of herself and not the baby or her husband first. I don't care if she was thinking about her future husband's life. You decide on one over the other, she can't have both and everything else.
The Kettering Incident (2016)
Tasmania & mysterious
I didn't realize Australia had such beautiful country. I watched this series because I love Matthew Le Nemez from "Offspring". The Kettering Incident kept me engrossed to know what the heck happened. The twin moons were beautiful and Tasmania is super out of this world gorgeous! I felt as if the forest was alive and fighting back the bad characters. I can't wait to find out some answers. Certainly Matthew Le Nevez must not die for season 2.
Tau (2018)
Loved it!
The beginning was a little slow but after Julia interacted with Alex and Tau I was intrigued! I thought the use of the droids for cleaning and cooking was super high tech. I was completely captivated to watch till the end without picking up my iPad or phone once.
The Honourable Woman (2014)
Goes on for way too long
I was excited to see Maggie Gyllenhaal and I love all the other British Actors. I love BBC. The problem with this miniseries for me is the main character Nessa Stein (Maggie Gyllenhaal). She is a naive and not very smart Baroness and leader of her company. She stupidly goes into Gaza risking her own life and her interpreter's life and feels absolutely no remorse. She has no regard for all the people are trying to help her. Nessa Stein continues to act as this righteous business woman thinking that she of anybody is the smartest person on earth. As the leader, Baroness, and spokesperson for her company, she doesn't listen to anyone particularly her beloved brother, Ephra who had risked everything to get her butt out of Gaza. Nessa also decides to have the most loyal body guard Tobias Menzies (my most favorite character) to do some very dangerous spy detective work for her own personal secrets in which he never comes back from. Nessa never takes responsibility for her mistakes and terrible decisions. Everything is about Nessa's emotional bursts of crying fits and disregarding the experts trying to advise her. I found this series difficult to watch because of the Nessa Stein character taking no accountability for her actions and crying throughout every scene feeling sorry for her self.
