Material Girls (2006)
Cheater Girls
I call it a pack rat movie. Why? because much like tinfoil and shiny things lure in pack rats, this kind of movie, with its overdose of fashion, diamonds, and corny one-liners draws in the pack rat audience, mostly comprising of 8 year old girls. (no offense) But while I would give it a low rating for that, this movie is even lower, because not even the story is original. If any of you out there are Disney channel lovers(like me!)you will know what I am talking about. As we flip through the endless list of Disney channel original movies, from corny to amazing to just plain bad,we come upon one movie. Cowbelles, made earlier this year, stars Aly and AJ as two rich, spoiled sisters who are made to work by their father after he loses his money made through his dairy factory. Sound familiar? Yeah I thought so. Both movies are pack rat movies, bursting to the seams with exurbanite fashion and huge amounts of bling, screaming, and shopping trips. they both also feature a common theme, that it is always good to work for your money, and after enduring some minor hardships, they come out changed people. they also come out with hot boy toys, and a "greater sense of the world". My summary? Material Girls is simply a badly made, copycat, pack rat movie that should stay at the back of the movie closet.
Tristan + Isolde (2006)
Breathtaking
This is truly the most amazing movie that I have seen this year. I went to see it only because i loved James Franco in Spiderman(Harry), and wanted to see more of his work. I didn't really think that it would be all that good. When i came out, I was sobbing. With its dark undertone through the whole movie, there is no light, or laughter. It is a very bloody, violent movie, it took place in early england, when they were colonies being ruled by Ireland.
The film shows the passion of tristan and islode, from their childhoods to when they met, and the introduction makes you fall in love with them by the first 10 minutes of the movie. it is dark and passionate, and the fact that no character is safe makes it all the more dark. The chemistry shared by the main actors is beautiful and touching, very refreshing from the cheap love in most movies today. The minute you see them on screen, you can see the love coming together. I never left my seat the whole movie, transfixed by the beauty, horror, and wonder I saw on screen. If you want to see a movie that captivates you and changes your perspective on love, then this is the only movie to see this year.
High School Musical (2006)
The best Disney movie yet!
As an occasional viewer of Disney channel, I have been very disappointed with their recent movies, but after watching this one I have changed my mind! this is the quintessential teen movie, with the perfect blend of incredible musicality, humor, and romance. This movie really sends out a good message of doing things that culture dictates you not to. The musical numbers are filled with vigor and spice, and the acting is top notch. It will leave you dancing and cheering at the end! The music is both moving and cheering, with well written lyrics and beats. the dancing is very well done, as a dancer, i was a bit apprehensive as to the quality of it, but the dancing turned out great! the actors and actresses should also be commended on a job well done! their portrayal of some outrageous characters really brought the movie up another level. I especially loved Zac Efron (summerland) as Troy bolton. He was very believable, and made my heart ache for him by the end of the movie!!! this movie is incredible and will have you dancing and cheering by the end!The songs are very moving(we're soaring, flying, there's not a star in heaven that we can't reach, and if we're trying then we're breaking free) Whether you're a Disney channel regular, newcomer, Young child, or forty years old, you will love this movie!!! 10 thumbs up!
