Marianne (2019)
I tried to enjoy it..
I really wanted to like this show, since some of it's scares are pretty good and creative, especially in the two first and the last episodes IMO. It's very much like the style of Mike Flanagan movies, but maybe with it's own little twist.
And I'm glad that there are more tv shows now that focus on real horror.
However, the scares soon turns to mainly being jump scares. And my biggest problem with this show is the script. It's clichéd and pretty stupid. And worst of all, it reminds me of horrible films such as Rec 2 in that the (not so clever) desicions made by the protagonists are decisions made only because they make the plot move forward (in some way). They do stuff that no normal person would do (with some exceptions) just because, I don't know - writers block?
Here are some toughts about the oldhorror clichés in the script, and they may contain minor spoilers
- Shouldn't there be a huge police investigation in Elden right now? There are bodies everywhere, and the protagonists are linked to them.
- Why did they steal that dog from the priest to get it posessed by Marianne; and how did they do it? Isnt it really hard to steal a guard dog - They all seem like rather lazy alcoholics to me. Couldnt they just have bought a little rabbit instead?
- This show does play the old "the witch-hunt was real"-card. And it feels pretty outdated and maybe even offensive.
Eerie (2018)
Prepare a drinking game for this movie
Because it's filled with every horror cliché there is. The first scare is even the good old mirror trick, and it's poorly done.
There are some promising scenes where the main protagonist talks to the ghosts, but they all end up as jumpscares. Be prepared that this movie is filled with these nonsensical jumpscares. They are everywhere, it's as if every ghost wants to jumpscare the main protagonist into understanding what's going on, all the time.
Was there hype for this movie? I dont get it.
Down a Dark Hall (2018)
Very strange movie. Strange... in a bad way
This movie starts off with:
- 1 effective scare
- Uma Thurman doing a veeery strange performance....
- probably the most cringy romantic piano scene i've ever seen.
And then the movie goes bananas
...and the jumpscares with horrible cgi feels very misplaced.
So that's it. It's good for some laughs. In the beginning, 2nd half of the movie is rushed strange and boring. No part of the movie is very good.
The Perfection (2018)
Needs lower rating + Not really horror (?)
I saw the high scores (for a horror), and had some expectations.
But the writing is terrible, the movie is filled with plot holes; and I don't think the creator of the movie has ever met an actual classical musician because the actors all behave like cartoon characters.
So well, the first 20 minutes sucked, and I was hoping for a good twist. And so a twist comes, and then it turns a bit gross. And then it's sort of some revenge story etc. None of it makes sense really. But I don't know - if you're into that stuff, maybe you'll like it.
Beacause the movie started out so bad, I was hoping it would not turn out to be yet another psychological thriller labeled as horror, since the writing was too bad to make one care. Actually, I could have just been happy with the two main actors stumbeling upon a haunted house, entering a parallell universe; or a random zombie invasion or something. Really, anything else.
The creator of the movie has clearly done very little research, and actually - the movie is so stupid, that when it ended I was wondering if this was one of those strange movies that's made by Snoop Dogg.
I personally think that Netflix should stop hyping bad movies like this one, and give horror fans some good movies to watch.
Apostle (2018)
Wouldn't call it horror and wouldn't call it a good movie. Watch the Wailing instead.
I would however compare it to several recent "horror" films such as Lodgers, and Errementari, in that it tries to scare the viewer with;
1. Strange people with old clothes, acting wierd
2. lots of slow "creepy" scenes showing blood and strange objects with "creepy" music
3. A confusing plot
And so on. It's not very well made, feels like yet anoter quick cashgrab and yet another movie trying to be a Slow burning horror movie. Go watch The Wailing or a Dark song or anything instead.
I guess the beginning is ok. The actors are decent. The plot is filled to the brim with deus ex machina moments. it's actually pretty funny. Horror at it's best has potential to be so creative, but this is lazy horror.
Last Shift (2014)
Watch it. It's a decent movie.
This movie is actually pretty entertaining. Give it a try. It is a B-movie, yes. But the scares are very effective. I would say it is one of the more scarier movies that I have seen in a while. Also, the writing is pretty creative. I dare say you wont get disappointed.
Malevolent (2018)
Good start, bad ending
Starts out good enough.
Your average horror film. Decent actors, Ok plot.
a little bit of Occulus mixed with Grave encounters and other films.
And then, the ending. Wtf.
I can't find any words for it. It is truly horrible.
How did they not come up with anything better?
Minor spoilers ahead:
1. They show way (waay) to much. Not a scary ending.
2. Elliot can apparently survive anything.
Mr. Robot (2015)
Review for season 2
Ok. Season 2. It is like watching a 17 year old doing improv after having read Crime & Punishment and paying for it.
