How to ruin a successful show
1 January 2022
Take one highly successful show: witty, light-hearted, playful, interesting, funny, fun, charming, delightful, entertaining.

Next, rip out all these positive attributes and substitute them with relentless preaching and "educating" about every right-on woke issue going these days. Ram this stuff down the audience's throat at every available opportunity.

Make the main characters sad, miserable, depressed, angry and clueless.

Introduce a whole bunch of new characters hired predominantly as props who tick all kinds of boxes and little else.

And portray 50-somethings as 80-somethings.

Ta-da! Mission accomplished!

You've just ruined a successful show.

Masterpiece

Claire Foy was perfect for the role of the young queen. Like many here, I found it a little jarring to get used to a whole new cast in Season 3. However, I persisted and am glad I did. The new cast reflect the fact that the characters had indeed aged. It would have been slightly ridiculous to slap "ageing" make-up on the younger crew. Olivia Coleman brilliantly captures the middle-aged monarch. And Season 3 covers a lot of notable history, like the Aberfan tragedy. As for Helena Bonham Carter, I think her wild, quirky nature brilliantly encapsulates the older and wilder Margaret. See her party scene with Lyndon Johnson!

Doesn't grab me

Sumptuous settings. Faithfully re-created period and place.

But the storyline is not that interesting. The acting is wooden. No chemistry between the characters. Nothing to make you warm to or feel strongly about any of them.

Reminds me of "Indian Summers" - great potential but a disappointment and, in the end, rather dull and uninspiring. Style over substance and talent.

Compare this to classics like Tenko!

An odyssey
24 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed accompanying the main character David (Samuel) on the three parts of his journey through this movie.

David combines the cockiness and arrogance of youth along with its insecurities and naïveté. He's been hurt by his parents and yet you sense that he longs for their acceptance and love still. He's running away but finds he can't escape all the baggage he still carries with him. He makes himself dislikable and yet he is in desperate need of a friend.

I thought the brokenness of Jon, his Jekyll and Hyde nature, was superbly played by Denis O'Hare.

Some have commented that the ending was unsatisfying. I actually appreciated the ambiguity of the ending. Focused on David's face as he walked down the road, you couldn't really tell if he was disturbed and scared at being abandoned or else relieved and unburdened to be free to find his own way again.

A fascinating slice of life movie.

Actually preferred Season 2
20 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Found it hard to get into Season 1, the first couple of episodes seemed to drag a little bit without anything to intrigue me, and the characters were finding their way. By the time they started interviewing killers I got hooked.

Many have said Season 2 is not as good as Season 1, but I actually enjoyed it more. I liked that they were trying to solve the Atlanta murders throughout the season as opposed to mostly talking to people already convicted. And they still had interviews with a variety of killers to maintain that suspense (Manson!). Most of all, I liked the exploration of the main characters' personal lives and struggles. The three strands all blended well to create a more gripping narrative for me.

Looking forward to Season 3 if it comes. And will we finally have the team meet up with the BTK killer?

Cats (2019)

I actually really enjoyed it.
24 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I like Andrew Lloyd Webber's work, like the Cats songs and tunes (though, curiously, saw the stage production twice and never liked it), and like real cats in real life.

I went into the cinema prepared to be disappointed, based on the universally negative reviews.

However, I ended up by being thoroughly enchanted and entertained!

The film does have a story: different cats introducing themselves and telling their stories to the new stray cat, then gathering at the Jellicle Ball to see which cat is chosen by Old Deuteronomy to be reincarnated. And, we have the evil Macavity in the background, kidnapping fellow contenders to increase his chances of scooping the reincarnation prize.

The singing and dancing were superb and amazing to behold, great choreography. The pace of the film was lively and snappy, no long dull moments. The CGI "fur" wasn't creepy at all, I found it fascinating and innovative. The different cat characters were individually delightful and entertaining. Some fun and funny moments that made me smile / laugh. And I loved the various cat mannerisms displayed, the creators "got" cat behaviour.

I would watch this again and recommend to others.
