Beef (2023)
Absolutely unique psychological study of all of us
This is not a regular Netflix series with a shallow story and quickened tempo. This one is smart and treats you accordingly.
Initially it reminds us the mastermind criminal drama like Breaking Bad was. Then when characters are slowly built up and reveal their complexity inherited from their troubled childhood, it turns out to be a pretty darn good psychological therapy session.
It has also some minor symbolic dark moments like the witch or speaking crows that reminded be a bit of Twin Peaks ambient.
What I liked the most however is developing every character individually and showing that none of us is really good or bad but for sure we are all weak at times. We are suffering loneliness, keep our dark secrets inside and sometimes explode causing all sorts of tragic events.
I am not giving full 10 only because of the first few episodes that weren't that rich yet, but the final experience could surely go beyond the scale.
My Best Friend's Girl (2008)
The one to watch again on bad days
This comedy may seem cheap and tasteless at first glance on the script and some scenes, but its really not. It has a witty humor, great dialogues and some memorable punchlines. Some dialogues are indeed rough sometimes, but not in a sense to explain to a viewer what was the joke about. Not get me wrong - I am not saying this is kind of an "October Fest" style of a comedy, but rather a subtle, smart one but with some strong words and dirty jokes in a few moments (especially at the big wedding)
I really appreciate this kind of a comedy that respects viewers intelligence. I even took down some lines in my memoir and using them till now.
To summarize I watched it maybe 20 times already and I wish we had more comedies like this one with Dane Cook.
After Yang (2021)
Requires your full attention
Don't even start with it, if you are planning to watch it with breaks.
If you cannot find 2h to fully commit, this movie won't indulge you enough.
It is slow, beautiful and quiet. No special moments of extraordinary lines or action turns. Slow pace all the time, almost like a meditaion.
Jungleland (2019)
Good Elegy about Charlie Hunnam
Thats another elegy with Charlie Hunnam as the main character, quite similar in vibe and colors to the classic Green Street Hooligans.
The movie itself is a mix of a little drama comedy, action and a road movie.
Mostly enjoyable and light but things get tougher and some serious drama enters "the ring".
It is a gripping piece from its very beginning, simple and genuine story about two brothers, both are good characters, one is a fighter and second is his loyal attendant. When a woman appears, things get complicated between them and some unsolved issued are brought up.
At the end loyalty love and brotherhood wins
Before We Go (2014)
This Holy uniqueness deserves 10/10
This movie stood me still and still holds me few years after watching it. Honestly I've never seen a movie like this - light, fresh, natural with genuine dialogues to quote on and on.
It is not a regular romantic story, that's for sure, its a romantic masterpiece with an oscar role well deserved by Chris Evans. The most characteristic thing about this movie is that it looks a bit like a document with a shaky operator hand, which makes it more realistic, natural, almost like you are watching the actions standing on the street next the them. Plus - these mimics, acting and looks these 2 main characters give to each other are simply stunning. One of the stories you can watch every few weeks and never get bored.
