Dark (2017)
A fascinating puzzle
Great show with really well-thought and executed plot, great acting and immersive atmosphere. The ideas and themes of the series are super interesting and are developed in a unique and intriguing way. The story is told in a great detail, nothing is left out. Everything that you need to know is there waiting for you to discover it. Directors have done an amazing job putting the whole story together in a way that keeps you interested, wanting to know more and they give you a piece of the puzzle in every episode. If you like thriller-y mysteries and like to work your brain a little bit that's the series for you. You will be pleasantly surprised.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Touches on important issues, but is monotonous and somewhat unclear
While the movie is too monotonous for me it touches on some interesting themes, definitely. I think we should see more movies dealing with the issue of repressed male sexuality. Men being "Men" because that's what society wants them to be .Not showing vulnerability and feelings. I really loved the scene of Phil with the napkin and I think it's the best scene in the whole movie. Perfectly captures what craving and loneliness feel like. The movie depicts well what it's like to be a person with a secret ,a misfit and a closeted outsider in the middle of nowhere. On the other hand I don't see exactly what the message of the movie was. The metaphor with the dog is also left unexplained and you have to read side information to get an idea about it.
Antlers (2021)
Intense and atmospheric
It's a very immerisve movie. Especially if you can watch it in the cinema. Del Torro's films are usually very atmospheric and of course here he also delivers . I liked the "impending doom" feeling. The fog, the "dark story haunts a small town from behind its' locked door " vibes. I liked the way the monster is depicted as well. Quite a unique one. Visuals are great. Some scenes are a bit gory and disturbing but in the end it works for the story.
There are some plot holes if you start to think about it which ruins a bit the experience, but no movie is perfect.
Scenes from a Marriage (2021)
Emotional roller coaster serving truths
Great mini- series. People who at least once have been in a serious relationship will be able to easily relate to the story and characters. I loved the raw emotion, the way things were said , the way things were avoided to be said and the things not said, but felt by the viewer. Amazing actors, great story, well-rounded and relatable characters. It made me think about my past relationship, myself and life lessons passed and ongoing.
The only thing I didn't like was the beginning of the episodes. They were distracting me from the story and were in my opinion unnecessary.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Important topic that deserves more attention
We should see more movies on the topic. It's an imporant issue that should be addressed more frequently and spoken about openly. I liked the way they presented the plot by slowly making us understand what actually is happening. The actors have done a good job too. I was very surprised by the plot twist. On the other hand I didn't really like the choices for music in the movie ... except "Toxic".
Why Women Kill (2019)
Second season is fascinating from the start to the end!
First season was good but I'm gonna talk about the second season, cause it's the one that blew me away! Best mini- series I've seen in a very long time! The story is great and told in a captivating way. Each episode has unexpected twists and turns and that keeps you super immersed in the story. The actors are incredibly talented and the characters are well-rounded. I could really see myself in the characters' shoes, understand their point of view and their struggles. The emotions were so well conveyed to me that I felt overwhelmed by them in a very thrilling way several times. The series makes you think about yourself, what kind of person you are and your ethics, moral and values. Second season is a gem!
A Tale Dark & Grimm (2021)
Captivating story, told in a great way
I really enjoyed the mini-series. The stories were told in a very interesting way that keeps you in anticipation to see what will happen with the characters. I really liked the type of humour they've used. Dotty( the raven) became my favourite character as she is super hilarious and the actress Erica Rhodes has really nailed the part. I was super impressed with her performance! The other actors were also great. The animations were very nice and I really liked the way the tale was told so that it becomes interesting for an adult as well, not only for children. I definitely recommend it .
Midnight Mass (2021)
Interesting ideas, but not the best execution
It was too long. The first few episodes are going super slow with barely anything of importance happening. To the point where I almost stopped watching. Then it picks up around episode 5. There were definitely some interesting topics and ideas and the cast of actors were very good and talented. On the other hand a lot of the ideas were not well thought through and seemed unfinished. Some of the characters were not well written and there wasn't common sense and logic behind what they are doing or trying to achieve. The series made me reflect on some of the things in my life which is a good thing, but It failed to make me feel the emotions of the characters .Unfortunately I was a bit dissapointed in the end , but maybe the bar is set too high after the two previous mini series with the haunted manor and house.
The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Could totally imagine the world of the series to replace our world
The series is interesting. The last few episodes of a season are usually the best ones. I found the relationships between the female characters to be standing out more which i liked . Also the relationship between Serena and Fred is very fascinating. The cast is great and I've been very impressed with Elisabeth Moss's performance. She is portraying her character in great depth and has a very expressive face. Yvonne Strahovski is also a great actress. When my friend was recommending this series to me she was telling me it's plot is different from the standart series and I found that it's true. It's a scary thing that I could totally imagine something similar to the events happening in the series to happen someday in the modern world.
On the other hand I didn't like that there's a certain repetitiveness of some of the things that are happening. There are a lot of long scenes in which one person is just going around alone not doing much and this can get a bit dull. The episodes could have been shorter also.
Mom (2013)
Great fun!
I had so much fun watching the series! The cast is great, the characters are genuine and flawed as we all are and the jokes are fun. There are also some serious issues that the characters are dealing with but as a whole the series is light and fun . I would totally recommend it for someone who wants to have a good laugh and not spend an hour to watch one episode.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Nice visuals and mixed messages
I like that with this movie Disney continue to give us examples of strong women solving their problems without men coming to save them. This should be empowering to the little girls. I like that they made Namaari like this masculine strong warrior woman to bring the message that it's okay not to be a feminine woman. We as society definitely need more of this. The movie is very beautiful visually. I think the idea about power and equality is portrayed in a very interesting way. The people who struggled to get power and raise above the others only brought destruction and the people who wanted to bring equality brought more peaceful living to the picture. Sisu was very fun and interesting character.
On the other hand the story as a whole wasn't very captivating. I didn't like the side story with the con-child. It's a bit over the top. They should've just made the joke with the kid and then continue the movie, not to bring the child with the rest of the characters and give it the characteristics of a grown-up. It's a bit too much. Also I'm not sure what was the idea behind the message to trust a person who's already wronged you twice with big consequences . Maybe that we should all be like Sisu - "Hopeful"
'Salem's Lot (2004)
Interesting interpretation
I liked most of the movie. If we exclude the beginning and end which are unnecessary in my opinion. A lot of the characters are similar to the book with some exceptions. In general I think it's managed to get the essence of the book and twist it in an interesting way. I enjoyed seeing the actual text from Steven King being put in the film. I also enjoyed having Ben as a narator giving context for the story. Effects are weird , but the movie is from 2004 after all.
Salem's Lot (1979)
A rushed and messy interpretation of a masterpiece
Maybe the movie was good for it's time. I've read the book so I'm biased and my review will of course come from that perspective. It seems like they were trying to stuff a lot of things from the book in the movie unsuccessfully for me. But if it was a series anyway they could've made a few more episodes and make it proper and not so hurried and messy which i think it ended up being. There were a lot of scenes where it was unclear why a concrete character is there. Motives of some of the characters were unclear sometimes. Also you are supposed to guess who knows who and from where because some of the characters see each other on screen for the first time but it's clear there is already an established connection between them which is not shown before that. I didn't agree with some of the decisions for the characters . Like for Straker they have written a character totally different from the book. There are some very iconic scenes from the book which could've been done but were instead skipped. Unfortunately the scary scenes were not scary but funny. On the positive side the music was very thrilling and done well.
The Devil All the Time (2020)
Long and Incohesive
I didn't like the movie very much. It was too long. There's a lot of stuff that could've been cut without harmig the plot. The story is told from too many angles and ends up being incohesive. The movie didn't manage to make me care much about the characters , except maybe about Lenora. There are stars in the cast but that doesn't always make a good movie. Probably they tried to stuff everything from the book into a movie and that's why the result isn't so good.
The White Queen (2013)
Intriguing historical drama with lots of plot twists
I liked the show. It kept me interested so I finished it quite quickly. I really loved how there were always interesting plot twists and how the characters kept evolving and changing. Probably they are very well written in the books which I haven't read. Some of the things I didn't like were the "giving birth " scenes and there was a bit too much naked women chests for my liking as well .I didn't understood what happened to some of the non-main characters. They kind of vanished and I was left with unanswered questions. Sometimes it was a bit tricky to follow through with all the politics and who's on who's side but I guess that'part of the intrigue of the series. The series got an 8 from me.
Sharp Objects (2018)
A dark and haunting puzzle
The story is catchy and hauntingly interesting. Its very hard to tell who the murderer is , so that's a great thing that keeps you interested. The fans of the thriller and crime genre would really enjoy it. The actors are more than great - really showing the depth and all the nuances of the characters.I really liked the aesthetics of the movie and how it was shot and made. The sex scenes were also very realistically and naturally made. The only minus I can think of is the length is a bit too long, they should've made a few episodes less.
Bridge to Terabithia (2007)
A childhood memory
I love this movie for it really captures the magic period of childhood . Everytime I watch it I remember exactly how free and nice it felt to have no problems , no obligations and to run free with your imagination. The end of the movie feels like an awakening. The inevitable reality of adulthood that we all have to face eventually
