The Quiet Man (1952)

One of the all time best
12 August 2019
John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara could not have been a better set of actors for a Irish picture in Ireland. Maureen O'Hara was so lovely and nice. John Wayne was the best of those days. What a seasoned cast with Ward Bond, Victor McLaughlin. This movie couldn't fail to be a success, one of my favorites and makes me feel a bit secure that people, at one time, were civil and had such integrity.

Propaganda movie but sort of off target
21 April 2019
This movie is a 40's war propaganda movie. Five people re-live their war experiences to explain why they're working in a plane assembly line. What I find suspect is the last person (John Carradine) re-living his experience. He was a vagrant who cared about nothing, not even the war. Being confronted by a town judge, who condemns him for not being active in the war effort. Interesting that a 40's war movie would put war service above constitutional freedoms, sounds like something that might happen in communists Russia but not in the USA, and hopefully never will!

Man women conflit, what's the point?
19 April 2019
In this movie Clark Gable and Greer Garson start out as ideological enemies. So the Clark Gable character falls in love with this hateful person, what's the point? Normally a guy go would go stage door right but Clark Gable is a glutton for punishment. This is what fails in this movie although we continue to watch in that we are still attracted to both actors and we watch, sadistically. A normal man would have bailed on this female rattle snake but as we know movies are fiction!

Not one of Hitler's top ten favorites

Great movie showing the beginnings of a transformation of a democracy to tyrannical rule. Interesting that the first stage was the intolerance of any dissenting views and opinions. Any democratic country MUST preserve freedom of speech and oppose any political party of movement or company that seeks to silence based on political views. Every American should watch this movie!

Bizarre but worth watching
24 March 2019
This movie is a bit bizarre with sort of a hint of oriental mysticism. The characters are like self-seeking entities, incapable of empathy. The whole affect makes for a very captivating movie, very good entertainment.

Not one of John Wayne's best movies
14 March 2019
This movie is more of a series of stories of the individual passengers. It's as if they anticipated disaster and were describing their life experiences as if this was important to the aggregate movie story-line. In my opinion this movie could have been so much better without the petty bickering and life stories of the passengers, but some people may like that. Seems John Wayne was thrown in for the name recognition and didn't have much of a role. What a waste of film!

Horse movie similar to 1946 movie "Smoky"
13 March 2019
This movie is very similar to the 1946 movie with Fred McMurray called "Smoky". This movie starts out well with the Howard Duff character undertaking the perceived impossible task of capturing a horse called Black Velvet. The horse is incorrigible and cannot be trained but then allows Ann Blythe to train it. So in essence the movie turns into sort of a girl and horse love affair. It seems the movie would have been so much better if it continued with the original story-line which is why I give a low rating. There are other twists but won't go into details and spoil for those who have not watched.

Good entertainment
13 March 2019
I enjoyed this movie, mainly because it is just fun entertainment. Movies in those days lacked the sex, bloody violence and political propaganda compared to today's movies. There was a production code for movies in those days and that required a plot, good writing, good acting to make them very good movies without special effects, etc... Anyway this movie was funny and had a plot, it is worth watching...

Danny Kaye at his best
20 January 2019
Danny Kaye was, no doubt, one of the most versatile actors of all times. Although, he was not the John Wayne type he was great in comedies. This movie, with such a clever plot, works well with Kaye's intelligent abilities. Added the visual eye candy of Gene Tierney and Corrine Calvet and all the other scantly dressed chorus women, this movie was stimulating to watch. Interesting about the morals of those days, women in long dresses and public attire, how these movies passed the movie standards is an interesting conundrum. So it was wrong to wear underwear in public but in a movie it was okay?

Starts out a bit boring but the end is powerful
15 January 2019
Not being a real movie critic this review may seem a bit primitive. When I decided to watch this movie it looked like your standard ordinary "B" movie. Never underestimate a talented actress, in this case Eleanor Parker. She made this movie really good, from start to the end she was able to portray the perfect character. Keep in mind her character changed dramatically. Keep in mind the other actors may be sub par but I recommend watching to the end, it's a good movie.

Lost interest about halfway through the movie
13 January 2019
This movie wasn't too bad although it seems it could have been much better. I'd say this is one of those movies some people love and others feel a bit disappointed. The movie started out really well for an old war propaganda film starring Spencer Tracy. About halfway through the movie the plot makes a left turn which left me feeling disappointed in the new direction. Afterwards, I found some scenes a bit silly and even unbelievable. Maybe the title should have been "A ghost named Joe".

Watched this movie 10 times

Jimmy Stewart was one of the most unassuming actors. Why anyone would give this movie low ratings is beyond me. I guess being an engineer I can relate. So well done, the writing. acting, etc... I'd take this movie above any of the garbage coming out of Hollywood these days. Although the ending was a bit obscure, any engineer would take the climate into theoretical calculations. In electrical engineering always take temperature extremes when designing circuits. Heat transfer into heat sinks is a big deal.

Wonderful old movie
9 January 2019
This is one of the movies you never hear about but wonder why when you watch it. Excellent cast and story-line, I really enjoyed this movie. Seems the difference between these old family oriented movies and today's fast food entertainment is having really good writers and actors. This movie keeps your interests through the plot, turn of events and the characters. One of the better movies I've seen!

Good family movie
9 January 2019
What makes this movie so good is the the relationship between the old man (William Powell) and the boy, so forgiving and accepting (so needed for kids to feel secure). The movie has a good story-line and good acting. This movie kept my interest and to me that's the watermark for a higher rating. The only disappointment was that Julie Adams was given second billing and she didn't appear until about 15 minutes till the end of the movie.

Decent movie
10 November 2018
First time I watched this movie and I give it eight stars, it's a descent movie, worth watching. Warner Baxter is known for his Dr. Ordway series which I enjoyed. This is a serious drama about front line war in WW1, the French fighting the Germans. The love interest of the two leading men (June Lang) was quite attractive. The reason I didn't give a higher rating is that it moves a bit slow at first but the war authenticity is impressive, even by today standards. Unlike the other reviews I'm not describing details, seems that spoils it for those who read the reviews before watching the film.

One of my favorite movies
1 August 2018
Why does this movie have such a low rating? This is a really good comedy. The acting is great, the characters are well developed, the story-line(plot) is very original, funny and well executed. I'd say this is a better comedy than any Jerry Lewis movie I've seen and I'm a Jerry Lewis fan. Dick Van Dyke was such a great comedic actor, James Garner and Elke Summers also, such great acting.
