A Colorful View of a Bleak Reality.
25 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you've never heard of this movie, i'm not surprised. It would be a challenge to market a movie like this from a big budget studio. but that doesn't make it a bad film. Luckily, A24 releases indies films that would otherwise struggle in the business.

The film is about a mischievious young girl named Moonee, and her mother as they struggle to get by while living at a motel near DisneyWorld. The film features great performances from all of it's actors, the child ones especially. They all give it a very organic feel, seeming not just like characters but real people. This is also helped by how the film used very little well known actors.

A major turnoff for most people though would probably be the lack of a central plot. The film is mostly segments of the different characters milling around over one summer. While I felt it worked in this case to help build characters up and develop them, others might feel bored by it. Sort of like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

The film is beautifully shot. Showing bright colors and landscapes, while also showing how harsh it can be at the same time. The whole plot is all seen through the eyes of child, and how she creates her own adventures, oblivious to the grim, poverty-stricken reality that she lives in. One of the few films i've seen to shed a realistic light on these issues.

I also enjoyed how the film used DisneyWorld in it's setting. Having the fireworks go off and people watching from outside the park. It almost made it seem like a dream, an far away place, where maybe the world feels a little bit brighter. The ending was beautiful. Just when you think you know how it's going to end, it switches. Maybe Moonee was taken away, or maybe she really did run off to a happier place. Maybe we know the answer, and maybe we just don't want to believe it.

Not exactly a "Road Trip film".
23 December 2019
I really don't know where to begin. I saw this movie on Netflix. I heard a little bit about it but I never had the chance to watch it, and It was surprisingly better than I thought it was going to be. A lot of people say that it is a "road trip movie", I wouldn't say so. There's a little bit of them driving around in the beginning, but that's about it. Most of the movie is spent with them in Las Vegas. If you ever read Roger Ebert's review of the movie one of the things he complains about is how there is no real main plot. Duke and Gonzo just take drugs you probably have never heard of and go to an area, get in trouble there. and then do it again at a different place. But I think that's the point, every time they go to another place it's different. The plot is like a drug high it starts out of nowhere and then just kinda stops. About the acting, I think that both Depp and Del Toro did an amazing job, sometimes it was hard to even realize it was them. Now to the drug sequences, oh boy. Now in some movies there are maybe like one or two drug sequences. But in this movie, at least 75% of the time, one or both of the main characters are on some kind of drug. Apparently, this movie is a hit or miss with most people. Some like it, some hate it. I'm trying to think of something to complain about, but I can't. If I do, i'll add it in later. To wrap it up, the movie is kind of the hangover if instead of the movie focusing on what happened after the crazy night, it was about the crazy night itself. And if that crazy night was an entire weekend.

Basically a slasher version of Idiocracy.
17 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I know I usually try to do a spoiler free review, but there is just too much to talk about. I never watched the first "The Strangers" movie, but I still gave this one a chance. Boy was that a mistake. A BLARING issue this film has is the main characters. Horror movie characters are known for making bad choices, but in this movie they're just flat-out stupid. Such as in one scene where the son finds a gun, he doesn't even use it though, he just leaves it behind shortly after. Another scene too where the daughter finds a shotgun, which she at least uses but then still leaves it in the car later. Right before the scene where the mother dies, she doesn't even defend herself, she just stands there and waits, no punching, pushing or anything even remotely defensive at all. Another big issue I have is the killer. They'res nothing paranormal about them, and they don't seem to have any special powers, but they still somehow seem to be EVERYWHERE. I mean everywhere. They're practically invincible too especially the Male Killer, which at one point is in a car accident, stabbed, and then in an explosion, but he still manages to get up after. There's a ton of other issues but this movie doesn't deserve a review this detailed. In conclusion, don't watch this movie, even if your a fan of horror.

Great film that's based on a true story.
4 August 2018
I usually don't watch movies like this. I decided to give it try, and I enjoyed it a lot actually. It has a pretty talented cast behind it : directed by Steven Spielberg, starring a younger Leonardo Dicaprio, and having Tom Hanks play the antagonist of the film (Which I think might be the first time), they all do a good job. One thing I think I will congratulate this movie on though is the emotional scenes, because actually have..well, Emotion in them, they seem real. Overall I think this was a really good movie but it might be a bit lengthy for some people.

Not the Worst film, but not the best either.
3 August 2018
This movie is like the "Independence day: Resurgence" of the Pacific Rim series, but unlike Independence Day 2, there was actually a few cool and interesting scenes and ideas. One thing did not like too was the kids in this movie, (i'm going to have to compare it to another film) they are very similar to the kids from Transformers: The Last Knight. They don't add too much to the story, and they're not interesting characters. So they're just kinda...there. At the end of the movie they tease a third film, and in my opinion that one sounds way more interesting than the one I just watched.

It's funny, it's goofy, and it's over-the-top, but it's supposed to be.

The movie is a spoof of spy films, but it also stands out in it's own way. With very good cinematography (especially for certain action sequences), and some pretty memorable characters, the movie is great in my opinion.

A good but kinda for forgettable Mystery.
3 August 2018
A very Jason Bourne-esque tale of Liam Neeson trying to get his identity back. It's not the most memorable movie though, but it's not a bad one either. As you expect there is a surprisingly unexpected twist ending (which I will not spoil). Overall it was good movie
