Annihilation (2018)
This movie is incredibly fascinating an eery
The best way to describe this movie would be to equate it to sketchbook. From the first glance at the cover its plain and obvious but when you start flipping the pages you will find an incredible art piece.I was a little bit tense seeing an all female cast on the screen thinking the movie would either start preaching something to the viewer or bash the other gender like most people do these days, but the movie doesn't do that at all and i am very grateful for it. This movie is rather long but the way it manages it's own run time is really good. The characters are a bit predictable and obvious but i took no issue with that. I am not a big fan of Natalie Portman to be honest but she did a rather decent job playing Lena in this movie. I really love the score of this movie. I had chills running down my spine when the soundtrack was plying in combination with what i was seeing. It doesn't melt into the background like a lot of scores do but rather it is actively present in the movie and you can definitely notice it. The overall message and theme of the movie is really fascinating to me. It took the overused "alien invasion" plot a lot of movies use and completely flips it on its head. The movie definitely pulled the rug from under my feet with that one. I really wish there were more movies like this out there.
I got to be honest here though, i had to watch this movie more than once to truly appreciate every single thing this movie throws at you. It can be overwhelming and i do recommend to watch it more than once to have it fully sink in. The movie has an ambiguous open ending that suggests that it's not really Lena but rather the alien came back from the shimmer much like her husband. I like that because the movie was showing us that clearly she has escaped safely. This is what i love the most. This movie has a lot of layers, dimensions and metaphors to it. That's why i give it an 9 out of 10
World of Tomorrow (2015)
16 minutes of trash
A friend recommended this to me. He was praising it for its amazing philosophical message about life and immortality. What I saw was one of the most terrible short films I ever watched. The animation is terrible. I saw better animation come out of USSR era animated movies and shows. The pseudo-philosophical message of this short film that everyone praises so hard can be heard from any of your drunk friends at a pub. The actual sci-fi has nothing ground breaking about it. Clones, time travel, consciousness that was stored away in a computer to escape death, aliens. Nothing about this is original in any way. Hearing Don Hertzfeldt's prepubescent daughter's mindless dribble that he attempted to rework into an actual scripts is the most insufferable thing in this entire short film. It's not amusing in the slightest.
The fact that this nonsense got 42 awards and was nominated for an Oscar is absolutely pitiful.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Really good
Watched this movie and I can say that's it's great from start to finish. A really great concept and execution. This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. There are a few things that threw me off. For example I personally think that the military people would catch on very fast that these monster dudes do have a weakness. Or that you could be airborne on a chopper for instance and just snipe the cockroaches from it with a mini gun or something. Idk. I like it anyway.
Definitely a good watch.
2036 Origin Unknown (2018)
A sour Mars bar out of 10
This movie is something else. It has so many problems it's hard to keep track. It feels absolutely disjointed and has very bad special effects.
The Bad:
1) Repeating animations. For a movie made in 2018 it has an embarrassing amount of repeating/looping/reversed animations. This can be because the budget of this movie was extremely small or it was mismanaged. Some viewers like myself are attentive to details and when animations are looped or reversed it can be very irratating to watch. I felt like I was watching a Hanna Barbara cartoon. Not only they repeat the animations over and over but a lot of them look mediocre.
2) Convoluted plot. The movie starts relatively slow. You can keep up just fine up till the movie introduces The Cube. From that point the movie starts to just throw all kind of subplots at you that feel utterly disconnected from one another and go nowhere.
The Cube can teleport from planet to planet.
Why?
Doesn't matter.
Cube's teleportation can be activated via EM pulse.
Why?
Just because.
The AI randomly decides to pull a "humans are killing each other a lot so I will kill them all and start over because I'm an evil AI" trope out of its metallic ass and starts to nuke Earth from orbit somehow.
The Mars space station for some reason has a SWAT team with guns on it that tries storming the room with the main character and the AI?
Why? How? What's the point?
After the AI kills everyone on earth it lowers the oxygen in the room so that it can suffocate the main character. She eventually suffocated and then they zoom into her eye and show some CGI space for solid 2 minutes and then zooms our to reveal her being fine and listening to a video recording of herself telling her she is a reconstruction of herself and that she has a job to do.
That entire sequence made me facepalm. The ending of this movie is supposed to be this mysterious and ambiguous thing that just doesn't work because of bad CGI and delivery.
3) one room. The movie has 1 real room to work with. The rest is CGI and it's bad. When the movie started off with a ship flying from earth to Mars and it didn't even bother to show the crew or the insides of that ship I instantly realized how limited this movie is. The room itself is not that bad. The AI robot looks alright. Can't really complain about the room most of the movie takes place in but lack of other environments gets old very fast. The movie occasionally throws in a scene with some bad CGI that makes you realize even more that the only real thing in the movie is the room with the AI. It really pulls you out of the movie itself. The people who made this movie should take note from 1408.
4) Too long and dragged out. This movie is 1h and 35m. A lot of time is totally wasted.
Good:
1) The AI was cool. The design reminded me of GLaDOS from portal. Couldn't tell if it was a real prop or CG but it was alright. The "server" room looked interesting. Basically what I'm trying to say is that the room they were in was well made.
Conclusion:
This movie is like a very long and convoluted cutscene on playstation 3. It's watchable but I can't say that I would recommend it to someone or watch it again. It's not completely terrible. I defenetely seen worse than this though.
