300 (2006)
Worth every penny!
My mate had been to see 300 hundred a few days before me. I had been trying to persuade my girlfriend to come and see it with me but she was having none of it. I went to see "the holiday" (rubbish) with her! Anyway, i sat down in the theatre quite relaxed blissfully unaware that the next couple of hours would be some of the most thrilling in my movie going life. A visually resplendent film charged on screen and captivated me from start to finish. It had everything i wanted. Fantastic acting, fantastically rendered characters and fight scenes that made mouth drop and prostate tingle. Gerrard butler was superb as the testosterone fuelled warrior king Leonidas and he and his musclebound band of Spartans made me feel rather inadequate when i come to think of it. But apart from having my male pride shattered and stood on, this film is one of the best i have seen for a long time. I haven't been this gripped since children of men. If you are some poor blokes girlfriend or effeminate partner please allow them to go and see this film. They deserve it. It makes you want to run around a field wielding a stick, push over weak kids and shout THIS IS SPARTA!!!
Blades of Glory (2007)
Funny enough.
I sat down in the cinema with an open mind. Apart from anchorman i have otherwise been quite unimpressed with any of will Ferrell's films. I like most people thought that kicking and screaming in particular was absolutely abysmal. However as this film progressed i started to get into the flow of the story, much like i did when i first watched anchorman. It was all very well timed and funny. I couldn't help feeling though that i had seen it all before in regards to will Ferrell's character...i knew when he was going to come out with a line. I have never found him to be a particularly talented performer. Only because his films are sculpted to suit his "style" of acting does his humour ever come across. However it succeeded in making me laugh out loud more than once...so it can't all be bad can it? worth a watch.
Churchill: The Hollywood Years (2004)
absolute travesty!
I sat down to watch this film knowing full well that it was a spoof. I was prepared for cheap laughs and a flimsy plot. But nothing could have prepared me for what i have to say is one of the worst films i have ever seen. The only real comic performances are provided by Harry Enfield and Rik Mayall. This film should and deserves to be left well alone. The ideas behind the film have good comic intentions but poor performances leave these opportunities unexplored. Camera work is shoddy and sets lacking in detail.I watched three quarters of this film and could not bear to watch anymore as an actor it insulted me. I someone asked me to watch this film again i would most likely scream and run away!
A Cock and Bull Story (2005)
Quite let down!
When i sat down in the cinema to watch a cock and bull story i was expecting to laugh for the remainder of the day. But what i saw frustrated and bored me so much it wasn't true. I'm a huge fan of Coogan and Brydon and i would strongly recommend watching any other of their films or series but stay clear of this film. The film is mildly entertaining at the best of times but i think that is because the weak narrative lets any comic timing down. In parts of the film Coogan and Brydon are obviously improvising and the results are very funny. My advice to anyone thinking about watching this film in the cinema's is "don't".
