Daphne (2017)
I really enjoyed it.
It really touched on a bit of what it's like to have PTSD, and to try to navigate a high pressure job while trying to find connection with other people/have relationships. It really felt like it hit on human experience pretty well, and it felt like it told some truth while asking hard questions about life.
I felt understood while watching it, and don't really see Daphne as some quirky person, but someone who is traumatized.
I feel like the film isn't afraid to take a rest from telling you exactly what is going on in Daphne's head at every minute and turn and let you breathe with the main character as she tries to find her way through coping.
As for the therapist, I feel like being that directive right off the bat would be a bit off putting for any client. Jumping right in and talking about the trauma can certainly be re-traumatizing to say the least. So that didn't feel realistic at all. I understand wanting to push forward with that part of the narrative because Good Will Hunting is already a film, but I felt it could have been expounded upon more.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Worth it.
Was really excited to see this film and see how Marvel was going to bring Carol Danvers to life. Brie did an amazing job, and I loved how the story really doesn't play into the need for a love story. There is no man coming in as a knight in shining armor to save, and all the other things that consumers are brainwashed to believe about what strong women are and how their stories need to be told.
I have no doubt there were many men who were disappointed with watching a strong woman on screen who didn't fit into the extremely normal mold thrust on females in hero stories.
If they aren't scantily clad, the movie must really suck, and I'm sure many reviews will be speaking of just that.
But the story plays well of a strong woman pilot who gets caught up in an intergalactic war. I love how it also really ties a lot of the Marvel universe together, and finally is telling more of the Skrull/Kree story.
Overall, also a great message to young girls/women/men.
I want to see more of Carol's sparky character, but even as the movie eludes - we are just figuring out who Carol is, and will probably get to see more in the next Avengers film.
Go see it. It's worth it.
