Black Bond, Backwards...
11 October 2021
Cryptic, superficial, martial-arts anti-hero? Check. Mad villain multi-billionaire with yacht? Check. Stuffy upper-class Brit providing assistance? Check. Special ammunition? Check. Legendary thespian chewing scenery? Check. Fast (forward and backward) German automobiles? Check. Finale with multo explosions, militias and special weapon that must be rescued? Check.

John David Washington as the next James Bond? No time to try, yet...

(And extra credit to Mr. Nolan for the passing reference to Wheeler-Feynman Absorber theory, no doubt via consultant Kip Thorne.)

Shimmer Lake (2017)
8/10
Clever, funny and with a great twist - much better than the poor reviews
4 May 2021
Expertly handled reverse-chronology black-comedy thriller which keeps you hooked, while cleverly holding the story together!

Don't let the poor reviews have you skip this - yes, some of the acting is a bit wooden, but the eccentricities of the characters and their suffocating small-town life are hilariously parodied. Stick with it and try to piece the story together - you'll be surprised!

If "Momento" and "Fargo" had a love-child, it would be "Shimmer Lake."

Don't understand the poor score - hilarious satire!
8 September 2020
Shocked by the poor average score this show gets - It's a great satire! (Think "Wolf of Wall Street" meets "Silicon Valley.") Also loving the all-Asian cast. Give it a go, it's very accurate (IMHO), and not nearly as bad as the detractors say...

Redacted (2007)
6/10
Excessive, unfinished, manipulative - but not nearly as bad as others say
26 November 2007
Despite the many criticisms by others on this site, Redacted is a compelling film based on an actual incident that occurred in Baghdad in 2006. Yes, the acting leaves something to be desired, the 'mixed-media' approach is distracting, and there are some manipulative moments (the beheading, the final still); But this is still an eye-opening film on the state of events in Iraq and the trials that *both* Iraqis and Americans have to deal with daily. The scenes at the checkpoint are particularly well done. Some of the dialog between the soldiers in the unit is compelling in its own way; Similarly so the scenes with the Iraqi reporters and 'embeds.'

I've seen all the recent films about Iraq ('Valley of Elah', 'Lions for Lambs', 'Rendition' ) and think that 'Redacted' provides insights none of the others do. In particular, it does an excellent job illustrating the clash between the respective cultures of Iraq and America. (50% of Iraqis can't read the signs at US checkpoints!)

Is this film a bit of an unholy mess? Yes, but see it anyway and make your own mind up. I think this one deserves at least a 6 out of 10.

Civil Wars (1991–1993)
Still miss it...
26 April 2007
A cute, sexy, interesting show that combined the smoky sensuality of Mariel Hemingway with the earthy charms of Pete Onorati. Clever plots, interesting sub-text, and funny cameos failed to get this show renewed. At least Debi Mazar did OK with LA Law, and now of course Entourgage. Perhaps this show overlapped a little too strongly with Law, Levinson's Homicide, and Bochco's NYPD Blue. Wait, can anyone spot a pattern here?!?

This show arrived at the culmination of a 'golden age' of television pioneered by dramadies like 'Thirtysomething', 'Picket-Fences' 'My So-called life' and, of course 'The days and nights of Molly Dodd.' A classic that was pulled a little too soon. (And no, Mariel in 'Central Park West' didn't even come close.)

I still miss Mariel. (Anyone remember the nudie episode?)
