Un chien andalou (1929)
Beautiful gem of filmmaking
It is a dream. That's it.
You can take this short film however you want, because that's the beauty of art. But that doesn't mean there's a meaning deep into the work. The first and last goal of art is to be, to stay. It looks for an aesthetic purpose, first and foremost. After that, there is a message.
Buñuel and Dalí didn't have a message for us. Just enjoy the ride in this mindblowing dream-like 22 minutes of artistic cinematic achievement.
La casa lobo (2018)
Disturbing and fascinating
A lot of work went into this. That's something you notice right away.
Incredible visuals thanks to a craftsman's work, "La Casa Lobo" ("The Wolf House") enraptures us in a seemingly interminable nightmare, full of transitions and man-pigs. Weird, disturbing, interesting, breathtaking.
Recommended. Fantastic piece of stop-motion/animation(?
Manbiki kazoku (2018)
Astoundingly beautiful. One of the best movies of the year.
I fell in love with this movie 15 minutes in. Subtle, deeply intimal and raw, "Shoplifters" managed to stole my heart and resonate with me in the most inner parts of my soul.
Beautiful colors and cinematography; fitting, non-intrusive music and a superb plot and performances by all actors, this film feels like a classical piece by a genius composer. An ode to art and cinema, "Shoplifters" nods to the all-time greats japanese films.
I only gave it a 9 because of the anger and sadness that the second-act made me feel, because it does turns the atmosphere of the film upside down.
Nevertheless, a masterful work by Japan's greatest working director (Alongside Miyazaki, who's on a break). I can't recommend it enough.
Içerde (2016)
Breathtaking
"Içerde" is the only live-action series I've ever watched in full, and I did constantly for about 2 weeks. That alone, considering my difficulty at keeping with a series, tells you how much I loved it.
Turkey gives us an expertly made series with a breathtaking plot (Reminiscent of "The Departed") and some brilliant acting. No episode is boring and you ALWAYS want to keep watching, thanks to the intensity that exudes from the screen. There are some pretty beautiful shots and the score/soundtrack is up for the task. It's long enough to keep you engaged, but not-too-long to be boring.
Maybe the best Turkish series ever, I need to talk about the performances. Outstanding acting by everyone involved, the performance that Aras Bulut Iynemli (Mert) brings to the table is nothing short of spectacular.
Go see it.
Doragon Bôru Sûpâ Burorî (2018)
Dissapointing
Stupid plot, dialogue and music.
Animation and drawing was amazing most of the time, except for a few 3D scenes.
The Blue Gogeta and Green Legendary Broly transformations should have more build-up.
I expected more from this movie, because it had a lot more potential.
I am a huge DB fan, BTW
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
What could have been...
An epic, emotional and gigantic story of a life, 'Once Upon A Time In America' it's one of the greatest gangsters films, and one could argue that 'gangsters' can be removed from that statement, ever made.
The benchmark of epic cinema, this movie takes you on and sucks you in with its atmosphere, its score and its plot to truly feel that you are witnessing an entire lifetime.
I only gave it a 9 because of the anger I will forever feel for not being able to see the full vision that Leone had for this film (A 6-hours long story, divided in two parts). There's so many character, relationships and plot development that had to be cut because of production that could have make this film even greater than it is (It does feel like a lot of things were cut short).
The only other 'complain' is that is, at times, very confusing and you end up with a lot of questions (This is a good and bad thing) that leads you to being a little frustrated. They can be deduced, though.
All in all, a true masterpiece and a must-see film for every fan of cinema. One of the greatest films ever made! (And maybe the greatest film never released in its full version).
Ultimo tango a Parigi (1972)
Interesting concept, but poorly executed
Interesting, different, but ultimately pretentious and badly executed.
The many flaws of this film outweighs its virtues. The editing is poor, the sound is usually off-sync or obviously superimposed and the stories and messages are unnecesarily unclear at times. The direction is fairly bad and I think Bertolucci thinks he's a greater artist than he is (Even worse than that, according to both Brando and Schneider).
On the bright side, it covers a theme widely banned from usage but so prevalent in society and human relationships (Lust; The relationship between sex and love; Dominance; Control; Abuse; Confusion and the need for affection; Loss, grief and memories... etc) and conveys a message that is deep down great (Even if the direction isn't the propitiate).
This isn't a sex film, but rather a film about sex and its many layers and ways, the feelings that come with it and its usage to escape reality and suffering. It's a movie that shows how a person may feel powerful while surrendering to the flesh and dominating someone smaller, but that ultimately fails to control his life or any other one, for that matter. The problem with this is that the idea is not executed to its full potential, coming across as pretentious.
The acting is 50/50. Sometimes it seems like an amateur movie, but some other times you can see subtlety and greatness, especially from the exquisite (Far more than that) performance from Marlon Brando. Schneider delivered a fairly good one, too.
I write all of this forgetting about the borderline rape of Schneider and its justified controversy.
I seriously believe that 'Last Tango in Paris' could've been a great movie, but the production and Bertolucci direction was far from adequate and the film suffers considerably because of that.
Repo Man (1984)
A lot of fun!
I found this film while looking for something to see on TV some years ago. I was young so it was really weird and confusing, but it also was a lot of fun! Give this movie a chance, you wouldn't regret it.
