Lake Placid 2 (2007)
A decent movie with some funny parts
The humor in this film is much more irony based... the original Lake Placid was intended to be much more genuinely scary, this one will actually provide some good laughs if you go into it looking for the irony not the scare factor.
The CGI in this movie is sub-par, but I think that this was somewhat intentional, it adds to the b-movie feel. The movie is not realistic, if it was it would be perceived as taking itself to seriously and would be stupid.
Go into this movie looking for laughs and you will get them. Go into this movie looking for scares and you will come up disappointed.
Harold and Maude (1971)
Classic
A film about a depressed lonely boy searching for meaning in life. He is ignored by his parents and tries to get their attention through his attempted suicides, which I might say are very humorous scenes. He is eccentric, drives a hearse, and is infatuated with death. Its not until he meets Maude that he becomes interested in life. Maude is an 80 year old woman, about 50 years his senior, and they fall in love. A very interesting relationship, intriguing characters that we really start caring about. We follow them on their journey, as they teach each other about life, and we learn from them. Love in any form can be beautiful......just as long as you are lucky enough to find it. Mickey and Maude are that lucky......you must see this 70's classic if you haven't already.
Unrest (2006)
What does formaldehyde taste like?
I just saw the most awesome movie to begin my horror fest weekend with and all I can say is DAMN, that was awesome. I don't know why a major studio overlooked this one. Well I'm glad that this horror indie didn't die and get buried.
Unrest is one of the films playing for 8 Films to Die For and shouldn't be missed. The acting was top notch, edgy and full of tension. I was terrified by the amount of terror a cadaver can create. That thing had more life in it than I wanted it to have. I have new respect for med school students for dissecting beyond the high school lab frog and crayfish. Autopsies are way too real to me. I'm sure that hospital morgues have a share of ghostly vibes. Ummmm.. "Professor, I think something is wrong with my cadaver." Gore, tension, mystery and thrill kept me hiding underneath my hat through this movie. If you're attending horror fest weekend, DO NOT miss Unrest!!!
Rinne (2005)
A movie mind game
The movie starts off with different people encountering ghosts, but giving no explanation on it.
Through Reincarnation Shimizu seems to be leaning towards the psychological thriller genre. Though this movie had that J horror sort of flavor, Reincarnation dives into mind gaming territory. I really love this development.
The film's story was engaging and goes through lots of styles. It moved along very fast right to my favorite part... the "revelation". That one should have people either shock or laughing out of their minds. Like I said, this is a brain game movie. Watch this movie for yourself and decide.
An American Haunting (2005)
On the edge of your seat thriller
I have been waiting for a real scary movie to come along forever...and thank you finally a real thriller has arrived. An American Haunting had me on the edge of my seat the entire film. Even better this is based on a true story, which I love, and it actually is the most documented haunting in American History. Why have they taken so long to come out with this story, it is fascinating and terrifying. Thank you Courtney Solomon for doing such a great job writing, directing, and producing this film, you really did the story justice. It couldn't have a better cast with Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, James D' Arcy, and Matthew Marsh. And a special recognition should go to Rachel Hurd-Wood who played Betsy Bell. I loved the suspense, the music adding to the horror, and the psychology behind the story. My boyfriend and I have been talking about this since we left the theater. What really happened....well I don't want to give away anything..I'll just say...you must see this film. Bring someone to hang onto!!
Sideways (2004)
Real life situations on the screen
Sideways Who doesn't love a film about good wine and even more interesting relationships. If you haven't seen this film yet...you must go rent it now....and pick up a bottle of wine to enjoy while you watch. It's so refreshing to just watch real people living their lives and having real conversations with each other. The acting was superb and very truthful. This film is about relationships, enjoying life and good wine. If you don't know much about wine you might learn a bit from this film...it makes me want to drive through wine country and go tasting. Each of the main characters goes through a major change and as we follow them on their journey....we care more and more about their lives. This film made me think about life and all the directions we sometimes have to go. Isn't a good film just like a good relationship...we want to learn, laugh, and not feel like we are wasting our time. This movie gets my vote of a 9 out of 10.
Benny & Joon (1993)
Great film!!
Benny and Joon A very sweet love story, about two people who never thought they would meet their match. June is a bit slow and lives with her older brother who helps take care of her. Benny is an eccentric man, misunderstood by many, funny, and playing his way through life. When the two have a chance encounter, they become intrigued by the other. Benny makes June laugh, and together the two teach each other about life. All the odds are against them and June's brother tries to stop their relationship. Sometimes love cannot be stopped and they overcome all the obstacles around them. A tear jerker, will make one laugh and cry. Johnny Depp is as always brilliant in his character work...and their is much truth in this story. A must see if you have not already.....you won't be disappointed. My vote is 7 out of 10.
