Chaplin (1992)
A good movie, but it could have been better
Robert Downey Jr received and Oscar nominee for this movie and he probably deserves it as his acting is truly amazing, the best part of the whole film.
He did a great job interpreting the worldwide famous actor Charlie Chaplin.
I didn't love how the life of the actor was told, showing for almost all the time facts related to his private live and his relationships with women, instead of showing to the nowadays pubblic the creation of the movies and the events that truly ment in his life.
I also got lost in the timeline sometimes as I didn't know that much about Chaplin's life before watching the film. I also didn't love the make-up that in some parts of the movie bothered me.
Chaplin is still a good enjoyable movie that can be apriciated by anyone.
I think that there could be better movies about Charlie Chaplin, and he would deserve them, for everything he did forming the motion picture industry that we all know.
Sunset Blvd. (1950)
An immortal masterpiece
The story is set in Los Angeles, where the screenwriterJoe Gillis, who is having a hard time, ends up by chance in the beautiful house of Norma Desmond on Sunset Boulevard. Norma is a former star of silent cinema who lives dreaming of her return to the scene. She will convince Joe to help her, however with time he will realize that she "imprisoned" him in that house anche he will try to "escape" lieing to her.
A central character throughout the movie il Betty. We see her at the beginning of the play and as the movie goes on she becomes more important. Almost at the end Joe will have to chose between Betty and Norma: Betty offers him to go away together, but Joe refuses deciding to live with none of the two.
This decision will cost to Joe his own life, as Norma kills him in order to stop him from leaving her.
It would have been easy to make Joe go away with Betty and so give a food ending to this masterpiece. So why it didn't happen?
Going away with Betty to live with her would have meant that Joe didn't grow from all the experiences he lived and so all the development that the character undergoes throughout the movie would have been wasted.
Just after watching the movie and analysing it you understand why so many people love it and why it is still appreciated nowadays.
The Artist (2011)
A modern old film
The Artist is a 2011 comedy-drama film, written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius. The film stars Jean Dujardin in the role of George Valentin and Bérénice Bejo in the role of Peppy Miller. The story takes place between 1927 and 1932, period in which silent films were replaced by the "talkies"
The way this passage is told, following the life of a silent movie actor, allows us to understand how important all this is and how much innovation can lead to different consequences.
I think some scenes are brilliant , like the dream one, which allow you to feel the torment experienced by the protagonist, suddenly excluded from the film scene.
It absolutely deserved the various awards received, first on all the Academy Award for best film.
It is an excellent film that can entertain both the general public and movie lovers: a real tribute to the cinema, to Hollywood and its history.
Flatworld (1997)
A great, well told, story
Flatworld is a short film by Daniel Greaves released in 1997.
The world in which the story is set is entirely made of paper and cardboard, so all characters and objects (like cars) are in 2D, while the world is in 3D.
This is probably the first feature we notice, feature that makes Flatworld so different from other short films.
The plot is focused on the life of Matt and his two animals, a cat and a fish. Because of an accident caused by Matt while working, the character of a tv show arrives in Flatworld causing various problems.
But is not just the plot that makes this short film so special. Flatworld is realized perfectly combining two different filming techniques: stop-motion and animation.
Sound effects are extremely good as they greatly highlight both funny and serious moments. There are no dialogues, so anyone could watch it and understand everything.
I really appreciated Flatworld, I think that, even after 20 years, it still is a really enjoyable short film. It's funny and easy to understand (perfect for kids), but it's also a technical masterpiece.
