Aniara (2018)
Class
I admire this film. It may not appeal to action movie fans, but its stark encapsulated portrayal of human greed, foolishness and hypocrisy gives much food for thought, albeit superficially unappetizing. Aniara is up there with the 1972 film Silent Running in my view, and I wonder if the 'pink' nature of the space storm encountered is a nod to this other excellent parable.
This Beautiful Fantastic (2016)
Beautiful flowers, but so contrived.
Okay, I know it's a fairy tale and fairy tales are to me by definition contrived, but please, library pay just isn't that good. The sight of Jessica with a paper bird reminds me of a former, better role. It's telling of England today that the fairy tale ending involves people owning their own houses. Happy gardening, if you have one and don't have a couple of cars parked on it.
Tangerine (2015)
The ending makes it worthwhile
I'll take gritty realism , complete with its raucous, tender, risible and utterly hilarious moments, over play it safe Hollywood pap anytime. Like some other great films, one really only finds out what it's all about in the closing scene.
Starlet (2012)
Sumptuous
Moving away from unconnected, loveless (apart from the cute canine) existence, Dree and Besedka perform superbly in one of my favorite Sean Baker films. Bravo Sir.
Native (2016)
Superb Screenplay
Not for those addicted to coffee, salt, CGI and technobabble, but for a beautifully acted, moving and thought provoking story look no further. Full-on orchestrated Beethoven would have been better methinks.
