Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2008)
Bizarre...
It's as simple as I said. Bizarre. Everyone knows the story of Jekyll and Hyde, and this version of it, well, it's weird... The acting of Scott is very good, don't be fooled that because the movie is horrible, the acting has to be too. As I don't want to give the whole movie, I will only express myself in one matter: I was disoriented when Hyde disappears on unexplained circumstances. I figure the director wanted to explain this by making Dr Jekyll say "it could have happened because..." but it's just not the way a movie is done. No matter how cliché it may sound, it has to be an explanation, otherwise they'll just make everyone wonder for the rest of the entire movie. Anyway, this is not a movia I'd recommend to see on a Friday night, but it's not a movie not to rent, it's always good to see something bad in order to really appreciate what is actually good.
Ratatouille (2007)
Simply the BEST!
Ratatouille is a very unusual story where a rat teams up with a human so they can become the best cook in the world.
As I described, the story is obviously a Disney-story. The rat, Remy, is adorable and has a lovable smile, you cannot not like his smile! Although the human, Linguini, is pitiful because he doesn't have a job, girlfriend or even a decent apartment.
Disney pulled it off and created the most appealing partners since Woody and Buzz.
The movie doesn't only have a very nice story. It sends messages throughout the movie such as friendship, loyalty, respect, honesty among others. It is very "disney"! (If you know what I mean) I honestly don't know what to say about this movie, only that anyone who watches it will love it.
Michael Clayton (2007)
Don't trust the trailer!
Michael Clayton is the story of a problem-fixer of a law firm named Michael Clayton.
Although the story seems very confusing in the 20 first minutes of the movie, the story clarifies itself in the rest of the movie. It sort of unravels. Don't judge this movie by its trailer, because the trailer was made in a very confusing way in which you don't understand the core of the story.
What I particularly liked in this movie is the "verbal action", as I like to call it. Unlike the John Grisham movies, which are based in a lot of action, this movie most only uses the argumentation between the characters. And it is those conversations between these characters that drives the action and that makes you get attached to the story and the characters.
I recommend this film to all movie-lovers because of the story. I believe that those that liked "Constant Gardener", will love this one, as it has superficially the same story.
I think that the golden globe nominations were very-well deserved, especially the one for Tom Wilkinson although it is most likely for Casey Affleck to win for "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford".
Beowulf (2007)
Potentially good but...
Beowulf is based on a Norwegian tale where the warrior Beowulf is "hired" to kill the king of Norway's son Grendel, and later on has to concern about Grendel's mother too.
As I said, it is a potentially good story but I could not figure out why Robert Zemeckis wanted to shoot with that 3D effect. I believe having done the movie with a standard shooting with some CGI effects would be much better. I am saying this because all the work of redoing the actor's faces would be unnecessary and it would seem more real.
I cannot say much about this film, only that I did not like it because the way the story was told was very confusing, and the movie is very hard to watch.
I expected more of the director of "Forrest Gump" and "Cast Away", even though the cast of this movie does not include Tom Hanks.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
like or dislike?
This movie is a like-or-dislike movie.
If you like a deep movie that really penetrates into the feelings of the character you will love it. But, if you are looking for a typical western bang-bang movie, you are in the wrong movie theater.
It basically shows the relationship between a sort of Robin Hood, Jesse James, lived by Brad Pitt in a very good performance, and a teenager obsessed about him, Robert Ford, lived by Casey Affleck in a performance of a lifetime. As the title says, it will turn out in Jesse James' assassination by Robert Ford.
Although I dislike westerns, this one was, I believe, very-well directed and with an unbelievable score. This movie would not have worked with a poor acting. And, luckily, the acting of all members was rather surprising.
Afterall, this movie is aimed for the Oscar, it is not meant to be a blockbuster, and I think it will have quite a number of nominations.
