Ghostline (2015)
Don't watch it ever!
What a horrible watch. I can't believe I decided to give this one a try. My fault.
Downhill (2016)
Incredible!
Downhill has a heartbeat that a lot of smaller productions can't relate to. It feels like a spectacle with a mind of its own, and that adds a strange charm, but it also amplifies the loose design of the screenplay itself. This is a flick that will be remembered long and it will frighten many , and it will do some very positive things for a large portion of the crew involved.
Down a Dark Hall (2018)
Okay Movie
I am not sure if I'd really recommend it, but I guess a slow Friday night could be reason enough.
Curse of the Puppet Master (1998)
Yes!
I love puppets, and the release of Civil War has gotten me once again thinking about long-form storytelling and all it has to offer. If you haven't seen any of the Puppetmaster movies, I'd recommend starting with this one.
The Unraveling (2015)
Surprisingly Good
Certainly some things about the plot that I didn't care for, especially towards the ending. Don't worry I won't spoil it for you, but I ended up really caring about the characters and what was going to happen to them and that I didn't expect for this type of film.
V/H/S Viral (2014)
A Shame!
You won't find a single character in this film to be likeable. Not one segment illuminates even one endearing personality. It's terrible to say that, but it's true. We're happy to watch everyone die and that's no way to navigate the course of a motion picture. We want to be attached to someone in a movie. We want to invest in something. it makes for a different connection, adds a certain intimacy to the experience. V/H/S: Viral isn't intimate, it isn't entertaining, it isn't thrilling in any way, and it definitely isn't a picture that should have ever been assembled. It's a shame, because Gregg Bishop and Marcel Sarmiento are two awesome filmmakers who pick up big respect from me. This just didn't happen to be the proper outlet for either to shine.
Cell (2016)
Horrible Movie!
Many supporting performers feel as though (oh boy, here comes another pun) they phoned their performances in. But is that where the movie falls apart? Is it truly the lack of heart? Is it something else entirely? For the first time in a long time, I simply cannot answer that question. What I can say is this: Cell isn't the jarring film I'd hoped for. Not by a long shot. Rather, it's awkwardly flat.
February (2015)
Amazing
This film screened a few months back in Seattle, and it was great to catch it then, however I was (admittedly) a few beers deep and couldn't quite appreciate it at the time (nor was I in Seattle for any work related reasons, so I was... switched off mentally, shall we say). Now, having seen it a second time, I was indeed able to see the film for what it really is, which is beautifully chilling and a true modern day masterpiece. And - might I add - to my astonishment, I was actually able to purchase a digital copy of the film through Amazon, and while I paid a few more bucks than I'd have preferred, the second viewing was no doubt worth every last penny.
It looks like a wide US release of the film isn't on tap until next year, but regardless of which year we choose to recognize as the film's official release year, it's no doubt one of the very best. In fact, it's one of the best films I've seen in my 35 years.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
So Entertaining and Hillarious!
There are a lot of actors in the movie, but only four who survive long enough to make a difference. Tyler Labine, as Dale, is a pudgy victim of low self-esteem, and Alan Tudyk, as Tucker, is his patient best pal, sometimes exasperated by him in the tradition of Laurel and Hardy. As Allison, herself a farm girl, Katrina Bowden is instinctively sympathetic to Dale. And Jesse Moss plays Chad, the leader of the college kids, who is a ferocious and hateful young man with a lifelong score to settle. The movie gives them not much more to do than fill their simple roles, which they do nicely. It's amusing when Allison tries to broker better communications between the two sides.
Students of the Little Movie Glossary may find it funny how carefully "Tucker and Dale" works its way through upended cliches. I though it had done a pretty complete job already, including the two or three chainsaws and the wood chipper, but I was much gratified at the end when a sawmill turned up.
