Miniforce X (2019)
My 5 yro's favourite show
A combination of Power Rangers, Voltron and Pokémon. They also robbed a character from Octonauts, certainly offers variety. 😅
But the story is fun, action packed and interesting for kids; good quality animation. There is conversation throughout the episodes at the right level for 4-6 year olds which helps them pick up new vocabulary.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Riveting
Where shall I start?
First the lead actor of course, she is mesmerising, hard to take your eyes off her. She brought the quirky, intelligent, independent beauty to life. Love the choice of fashion and music.
I honestly did not expect a story about chess playing would be so engaging, its pace feels optimal throughout the season. The series entices with dramatic turns, and yet allows enough space to appreciate the details - artistic settings, the performances of a talented cast, and the dialogues.
Everything is crafted with care and delivered with poise.
Mulan (2020)
I liked it!
A bit surprised to see such low ratings, why so many haters? This is a different take to the original humorous Disney animated version. However the tone and style of this movie is more true to the Chinese folk story. Yes, they added martial arts and some magic, but the original story was very simple, it needs to be spiced up a bit, I liked those touches. The witch character was not well developed and her ending was not convincing, felt very forced and rushed. Some parts were slow, but I thought it was enjoyable overall, probably best of Liu's performance. Nice to see a full Chinese cast.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Low expectations and EQ to enjoy this
Impressive special effects and battle scenes like all Star Wars movies, however what makes a great movie is never one of those things. I went with no expectations, as I did not believe there was enough time to safe the saga in one movie after what damage has already been done. Not convinced by any of the relationships developed by the last 3 movies. They all fell flat and the characters lacked real emotions or bond. The storyline had some good ideas but both the story and it's characters did not get a chance to build up properly due to having a different director for the middle movie.
I was left waiting for Finn to explain what he wanted to say to Rey, I could take a guess but don't expect audience to have special powers.
It's fine for kids under 12, feel sad for all the other true Star Wars fans including myself when I left the cinema.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Disappointing final 3 episodes
My favourite TV show ever, ruined by the last 3 episodes in season 8. Most of the characters this show carefully crafted and built up over the previous season all had pointless endings. And how slow was that final episode? Talk about anti-climax!
Roma (2018)
A masterpiece
The movie started quite slow, at first I thought 'this could be another one of those movies praised by critics but no one else gets?' It soon draws me in, with no music, just stunning cinematography, clever use of sound effects and conversation depicting someone's life events. The emotions this movie has stirred in me was immensely powerful, wave after wave toward the end, and it was not because of any deliberate drama, I was merely invited in, to experience someone else's life moments. I could only marvel at the director's talent.
Being a black and white film, you feel like it is a memory, if you pause on any scene it's becomes a LIFE magazine photo from the past.
I also love how this movie portrays the strength and compassion of women in their most difficult times.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Predictably simple, but still entertains
I went to this movie with zero expections, as Brie Larson in the trailer was so plain and boring. My view didn't change much afterwards. She is a good actress, maybe the director and scrips did not allow her to shine.
Like wonder women she is unscratchable, but the difference is Wonder Woman showed more vulnerability in other ways, by just being a woman. The action scenes were impressive in Wonder Woman, here in Captain Marvel, it seemed a bit lame. This lady Marvel seem to have gotten invincible power too easily and all the flash backs of her past were very weak for her character building.
Overall the movie was still good, I liked Samual Jackson and the cat. They've thresded this one with the main story very well.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Blown away by the quality of this movie
I am compelled to give this movie a 10, not because I think it is perfect, I rate a movie based on the impact it had on me and how much I enjoyed it.
This is one of the best SciFi movies I have seen, no longer interested in Star Wars sequels, but I can't wait to see the next Alita film.
I was immersed from start to finish, the CGI and actions are groundbreaking, beautiful scenes with extraordinary details and clarity. Another showcase on the possibilities of new technology. Characters are well built.
The story was enjoyable, even though so many have adapted the ideas in other films, there are still elements of originality here.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Yawn
I normally like romcoms or feel good movies, but this one really missed the mark by a mile. The plot was so cliche, it failed to create the right amount of drama or humour to engage the audience as a normal romcom would.
I liked the 3 main characters as actors, the main couple and the mum, that is the only positive comment I could make. This movie's flamboyant settings and decor were tasteless; most of the cast behaved more like Americans than Asians, which was another disappointment. There is so much beauty in Asian arts and culture which this movie could have incorporated for an opulent treat, but it only delivered tackiness. I had to pick on the poor choices of songs, the main ones chosen are English songs or an English song with Chinese lyrics. Try a bit harder next time.
Someone compared its pointlessness to Blair Witch Project, I have the same thought pop up in my mind. Except this was more bearable and didn't give me motion sickness.
