You Were Never Really Here (2017)
Totally Missed Its Mark
Until we watched this movie every Joaquin Phoenix film I had seen showed the depth Joaquin has at different characters and the Directors mastery of telling the story. It is unfortunate Mr. Phoenix picked a film, with a good idea, and had the wrong Director on the project. You know how "Joker" took the intimate moments and made them crystal clear for the viewer to understand and "experience" the feeling of the moment, the pain of the character to the point where the viewer empathized with the character? The Director of this film tried to bring those suspenseful and edge-of-seat moments but then butchered them with poor dialogue, cinematography, and storytelling. It was so obvious to me what they were trying to do, and literally painfully obvious they were not able to pull it off. If anyone applauded at the end of this movie it was only because they were sitting next to one of the actors or crew. I know this is harsh, but the film was really, really bad.
Ragamuffin (2014)
Relatable portrayal of Rich Mullins' walk with Christ.
This movie was recommended to me by a friend with whom I shared my feelings of spiritual "wandering" if you will; a believer with lots of questions and a feeling of emptiness that comes and goes. The acting was very good and the story honest. I am use to movies that lead to an obvious conclusion, however, this movie wasn't the typical countdown to an epiphanic moment. Rather, it was exactly what I needed in realizing I am not alone in my struggles for meaning. Wear comfortable clothes because this movie is a bit long.
My rating of "8" out of 10 is relative to movies of this category. This film should not be compared to Hollywood blockbusters, and justifiably so; the film is a message to each viewer who wishes to receive. The feature was not, in my opinion, made to entertain but more importantly to potentially impact your life in a far greater way than even the most popular movies ever could.
Enjoy.
