Teenage Bounty Hunters (2020)
Incredibly Smart Satire
Honestly I wasn't interested in the show at all when I watched the trailer (and here comes the "but"...) BUT when I watched the first episode I absolutely couldn't stop. The script was genius, the acting was perfect, the filming was spot on, the characters were rounded, the plot was engaging. The creator of this show should really be proud - not only was the show a great mix of comedy and drama, but they absolutely mastered the art of smart satire. Anyone who doesn't watch this show is really missing out on something hilariously special.
Love, Victor (2020)
Meh
I mean it was an okay watch, was it a knock your socks off your feet kind of watch? No. Unfortunately, not. The concept it great, and it's a show that tells a story that's needed. But the execution wasn't amazing. The scripts were very jilted, boring and unoriginal, whomever wrote them seriously needs to be replaced. And I don't know how but they managed to make nearly all the characters either a cliche or unlikable. And unless you intend to actually explore them, giving all your characters back stories of hardship doesn't suddenly make them more complex or likable. Seriously, the only character I truly liked was Veronica. Also the tropes that played out through the season were just overused and tripe.
However, I guess this is one way to achieve equality. With the plethora of mediocre television shows featuring a straight main character; it seems that making a gay show with the same execution equivalence and same old tales is what was wanted. So perhaps the meh-ness of this show isn't such a bad thing after all, because it is just like any other very average hetero show, just with a twist of gay. And if we are being fair, this is what is needed - a gay story with all the played-out rom-com themes and bad lines and serendipitous coincidences. Cause if straight people have them in their movies and tv shows (despite how corny and lame the tropes are), so should gay people have them (despite how corny and lame the tropes are).
Knives Out (2019)
Sorry Rian Johnson, but you are no Agatha Christie.
I was genuinely poised ready to love this film. A mystery movie with great reviews and a stellar cast? Definitely my thing. And... I liked it. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I liked the cinematography, the characters and the acting a lot, even if Daniel Craig's accent got on my nerves a bit. It was really an enjoyable watch. But if I'm being honest the movie frustrated me, in that for the majority of the film it seemed to be solved in the first half hour. Of course, I knew straight away that what was being presented wasn't actually what happened, but it took a while for me to feel like everything was all heading in a direction and that's what was frustrating. As for complexity in the mystery, I had solved it a half hour before the "big" reveal. I also figured out the minor twists before they happened, like with the knife and the ink, because there were some pretty displaced clues and comments. Which in great mysteries, these clues would have been hidden well enough that you miss them the first time so that the twists and reveals are shocking, and the clues become apparent as you understand what happened or when you see the film a second time. But they were pretty obvious straight away in this film, that I predicted everything before they happened. So although this was a good mystery, it did not reach great. I like what they were trying to do, but they definitely thought it was cleverer than it actually was. Hence, sorry Rian Johnson, but you are no Agatha Christie.
Motherland: Fort Salem (2020)
Best thing to happen to cable TV
Cable TV shows now just make up the plot and arcs as they go along without any thought to the future, but not this show. They don't give you all the answers straight away but you can also trust that the loose ends and questions will be tied up at some point. Everything on the show is done purposefully and with a reason, which is so hard to find in cable tv shows nowadays.
The world building is fantastic and the storyline is so well thought out that there is never a moment where you think that an episode is a filler, or that the character's development is stalled, or that they are catering to fan theories. It is so refreshing because you can tell the writers have a clear direction for the show.
It is a show unlike anything you've seen, and it is very fresh. The very opening scene of the first episode is hooking and will grab your attention straight away, as will the rest of the episodes. The lore and the way they've revitalised the notion of witches is just so intriguing. The effects also are top-notch, which is great because there is nothing worse than being distracted by bad effects that make you cringe.
Give it a go, you won't regret it.
