Andor (2022)
Finally, some non-Disney Star Wars
Dark, gritty, and better than any other live-action SW series IMHO. The writing, production, special effects, and acting are all top notch and the episodes feel like you're watching a movie and not a TV show. Mandalorian (which I really like) is a close second, but it has some bad acting and goofiness associated with Disney-SW productions. My only gripe, so far, is the big letdown after episode 6. Episodes 7 and 8 are good, but not ep1-6 good, more like just okay. Clearly better than anything in the prequel series or sequel series. Since TESB, the best live-action Star Wars has been the stand alone and non-series related content such as Andor, Rogue One, and The Mandalorian.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Yawn
The production is visually spectacular, with barely average acting, and the story thus far is dreadfully boring and sloooooow. None of the characters are likeable to a point of giving a crap about them. They seem very cookie-cutter. Perhaps it's the painfully contrived dialogue ot the lack of good story telling or most likely both.
For a billion dollar effort, this is extemely disappointing. It's obvious they spent a great deal of effort and money on special effects and not much on the story. I still can't believe they left this to be run by two people with not nearly enough experience to be helming a billion dollar venture of this epic scale.
Maybe it'll pickup the pace and improve, but I'm not holding my breath. Amazon has really dropped the ball on this one and the Wheel of Time before that. Meh. What's a billion to Bezos anyway?
Bird Box (2018)
I liked it
Pretty good, though I wouldn't call it the scariest movie I've ever seen. I think it was tense and anxiety ridden, but not super scary. The thought of what could happen and having to go thru it blind gave it some scares and chills. Good End of the World film.
Cargo (2017)
Good post-apocalyptic film
Another decent, enjoyable, bleak, hopeless movie similar to Ravenous, Carriers, The Survivalist, and Here Alone.
Here Alone (2016)
Another good slow burn with good performances
A very good bleak and hopeless film with good acting performances and profoundly stupid decisions. If you like this, as I did, you'll probably like Ravenous, The Survivalist, Carriers and Cargo.
The Survivalist (2015)
Slow burn with good acting
The movie overall was pretty good. I felt there was too much filler in the form of stares and glances(about 1/2 the movie), but what else is there to do during the End of the World filled with deceit and distrust? Realistic approach I suppose.
Les affamés (2017)
Pretty good End of the World film
I actually really enjoyed this movie, but can see why some don't. Not much character development and a few dumb decisions made by characters, as is common in these types of films, but a lot of tension and anxiety. I watched this and The Survivalist back-to-back and enjoyed this more.
