Finally decided to give this one a go. First off let me just start by typing: I really didn't like Afterlife. I mean, AL started out OK, kinda liked the set up of the family moving in to an old house and finding some GB equipment in the basement. But it quickly devolved into a schmaltzy nostalgia baiting mess very quickly. As the third act started I found my cringe muscles working overtime and it didn't stop until the uber-cringe inducing final scene.
So that being said, were they able to move past the constant fan-baiting and progress these characters in a meaningful way that would have them stand out in their own right? Nope.
At the beginning, when the family are chasing a ghost while driving Ecto-1, Egons garand-daughter exclaims "I have a ghost to bust!". Paul Rudd then tries to Bookmark the comment by saying "Ok, that was cool!" In a bid to try and tell the audience how they should think about that cheesy line. It's clear from the get go that these people do not respect the audience's intelligence or time. Cool things aren't "cool" because you said so. Insulting.
Such a shame, the actual spooky opening scene was mildly intriguing. I especially liked the image of the frozen hand stuck to the revolving grammophone handle. But that's where the praise begins and ends.
What happens next is a bunch of scenes that barely tie together to make even a thirty minute tv episode interesting.
Sadly the way films are made now are more "tell don't show" because they know half the audience are watching tik tok and have the attention span of a gnat. So obvious lines have fo be put in just in case someone was looking at their phone instead of the movie screen.
Yeah, but honestly just let this franchise be a thing of its time. It clearly doesn't work in the modern world and thats ok.
