We Are Not Alone (2022)
Refreshingly well written
There is some really poor quality dross on British TV so I was surprised to come across this series on UKTV PLAY, rather than a mainstream channel because this is REALLY well written. New, clever jokes are inserted throughout, rather than just the first episode as with some BBC comedies. Tight, quality writing, with a lot of thought. It makes it stand out. I'm a little shocked it hasn't been picked up by the mainstream channels. Think Friday Night Dinner and the Wrong Mans... . It's off beat and dark in subject matter (hostile alien invasion) but handled so well and appropriately that it had me in stitches. I'd really highly recommend this.
Detachment (2011)
Terribly depressing yet filled with hope.
Why are we so unhappy? Is it our own fault? Is it that of our parents, of society or of what? Life is really tough. Do people make you angry? Are people themselves to blame? Could schools make a better job of our kids? Could parents make a better job of bringing up kids? Does it help if you get emotionally involved? Or is a bit of detachment helpful? This is a great movie, one that looks at all the above. It's a serious movie, at times you wonder if it is a North Korean propaganda film about how terrible the United States is, or if it is a searing indictment of society today - or perhaps it's something else? Whatever it is, it'll pull your heart strings, make you think, make you smile, make you cry and it'll be a movie that you won't forget the next day. It's acted with enormous depth. I want to be a better person now that I've seen this movie. You can't ask for more from a movie.
Adams æbler (2005)
I've remembered this movie years after watching it
Quite simply one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm not Danish so I couldn't pick up on the bad accents. I'm not a professional film watcher, so I haven't picked up on the fact that this is using themes and ideas from elsewhere. But this is simply a great movie. With a great message. I love it! I love Danish movies - the few I have seen seem to capture what cinema should be about. Not about multi million dollar special effects, but about story and message, lighting and filming, hope and despair.
Tiempo compartido (2018)
It felt like my train just got cancelled.....again.
I stumbled across this gem about buying time shares whilst looking for a fresh Danish movie (which seem to be consistently satisfying) on Netflix. None were available, so instead I chose this. I watched and watched just waiting for that crucial moment where everything comes together and you realise that you aren't simply watching a rather dull anti-timeshare, anti-big corporation movie with the level of depth that you may get from an annoying and pretentious university student. I got to the end of the movie and am still waiting for the moment of brilliance to shine through. Did the movie explore the family theme? Hmm, not sure it did, though they used the word 'family' quite a bit, so I'm also a bit confused about why other reviewers thought it did. It is true that this is an unsettling, ruffling experience of the imperfection of humanity, but so are British railways, and I wouldn't necessarily go on a train ride in the UK for entertainment/insight/ philosophical perspective. I'd end up going berserk with frustration about how I'm wasting my time. Life is short. Watch a better movie.
