The Way Home (2023)
Highly watchable.
I tried this show because of Chyler Leigh and I stayed with it because of Chyler, she does not disappoint and her role as Producer is clearly helping this project. Sadie plays her role with a high level of earnestness that is a bit 'much' at times but still enjoyable.
My head canon is that Mama Del has some early dimension which accounts for some of the 'mystery' and her lack of truthfulness, plus why everyone puts up with her miserable attitude that flares up randomly.
It is also so so so great to see Marnie McPhail in something again.
They should not use the Patient Elliot storyline, though, that is an overused and sad trope that should be retired. Elliot she doesn't like you in that way, move on. Take the L, it's pathetic watching him mope around and interrupt awkwardly. Plus, where does he live? Is he living on the farm somewhere? Does he sleep over all the time or just come over for free coffee daily at dawn and no one says anything? Does he live in the barn? Does he have parents? Is he a ghost, is the twist? He needs more depth as a character to get me to 'buy in ' to this romance, at least Kat has chemistry with Brady and he has an actual personality (for better or worse).
Also, I need to hear people attempt a Maritimes accent. Someone, please, make an effort.
Supergirl: The Gauntlet (2021)
They finally got back to what they do best.
Solid episode with some fun scenes. We have missed seeing the focus on Kara for so long that it was refreshing to see. I questioned why Kelly was even in this episode, she was used so little and unnecessarily (literally the opening scene was to establish why she would not be in the ep) and the ending when she showed up uninvited and unneeded but then suddenly has the reflexes to see and deflect lightening had his shouting at the screen (and the cringe final scene with her and Alex where she came across as clingy and stalkeriish - I will always be around you forever and Alex was like 'sure okay' and nothing more). They could have skipped Kelly from this episode entirely and then not had the William and Nia scenes (just leave her having her power nap) and used that time for more Kara and Alex scenes, or Kara and J'onn. It's what the show does best, it's what we have been begging for, it's what the actors excel at etc. No quick forehead kiss when Kara wakes up on the sunbed, no jokes about how much Alex hated being optimistic, so much wasted opportunity so they could squeeze in William's handful of lines. Also that McGuffin / portable hall of requirements thing Alex wears now is just ridiculous. I liked her better without it.
Supergirl: Still I Rise (2021)
Disappointingly Bored
I can not say what the overall plot of this finale is intended to be. If it is about "power" it has missed it by a lot. If a new viewer watched this episode they would have no idea what the show is about (hint: it is about Supergirl). So much unnecessary dialog and scenes with the weaker members of the cast, heavy handed social commentary, and no sister interactions.
Supergirl: Blind Spots (2021)
waste of remaining episodes
This whole episode seemed selfindulgent and self important, the only one who really seemed to promote was is the.eponymous Guardian herself who can't stop gushing over how much she wrote and controlled and promoted and self inserted into this episode. Nuanced it is not. It is ridiculous that Kara ZOR-EL, a beacon of inclusion and kindness, needed to be lectured to by a newly introduced and often arrogant character about her worldsview. Another episode where they dumbed down Kara (and even Alex this time) to prop up another character that is not strong enough or liked enough to stand on their own merits. Let's hope the show is down with these unnecessary detours and focuses back where it belongs - on Kara.
Supergirl (2015)
declined too far in quality to still be watchable
I used to like this show. Really liked it, never missed it kinda thing. But not soon after the beginning of S2 there were unforgiveable things done to the show and it never recovered. Now in its final season, the show is padded with unnecessary characters with storylines that are truly forgettable, but over used all the same. This show sadly peaked in it's pilot season and it is well past the time that it limps along to its finale. Shame, that, as Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh just slayed as their characters. Show and other cast mates just let them down.
American Animals (2018)
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would
It was a bit jarring at first with the back and forth style but it was such an intriguing story and we were drawn into the documentary style of it. Blake Jenner was very good in it, unfortunately his role was relatively smaller and he was not on screen as much. Jared Abrahamson gives a great performance and I can't wait to see him in more feature work. He is very compelling as an actor.
