Yahsi Bati (2009)
Wanted! Cem Yilmaz
I am truly disappointed with this movie. OK maybe I was expecting too much but this movie is not even mediocre.
Arog had already some signs of a downturn in Cem Yılmaz's movie making career and this movie is a justification of this observation.
Personally, I couldn't understand what Cem Yılmaz tried to do in this movie. Maybe he tried to follow Şahan Gökbakar's Recep İvedik series which has quiet high box-office receipts though being very low level. There is no storyline and nearly all jokes(being very rare) are based on swearing. The only difference between this movie and Recep İvedik series is the budget but we clearly see that spending more money doesn't necessarily mean making a better movie. In fact, if you are OK with "swearing" comedies, Recep İvedik is much more successful than Yahşi Bati in entertaining the audience.
There are some extremely boring and unnecessary scenes in the movie. Scene transitions are very bad. It is like the movie wasn't edited at all.
This movie can't even be compared to "Gora" or "Her şey çok güzel olacak". Cem Yılmaz keeps spending his credit earned by these movies and his stand-up show.
I don't want to see Cem Yılmaz in "Bank Asya" league, he should be a "Turkcell" super league player. He is quiet an intelligent person and I am sure he can do much better films with his resources.
Next time, I will think twice before buying a ticket for a Cem Yilmaz movie.
Recep Ivedik 2 (2009)
Definitely not a sequel
This movie was supposed to be a sequel to highly popular Recep İvedik, but these movies are different in many ways.
In the first movie, there was a storyline and jokes were not based on swearing. Yes, there were some scenes which were disgusting at times, but the movie as a whole wasn't so bad.
In the "supposedly" sequel however, nearly all jokes are based on swearing and the movie has no storyline. There are some changes in Recep İvedik character as well. He is now much more aggressive, swearing and can speak English:) Grandmother role in the movie is a total disaster. This role includes nothing more than swearing and player's acting is very amateur and disturbing. In fact, this observation is valid for all supporting characters in the movie except the "bonus" boy.
After the release of the first movie, there were some exaggerated criticisms about the movie being very "low level". I didn't agree with these thoughts then, but now it seems that with Recep İvedik 2,Şahan Gökbakar wants to show the critics what is called a "low level" movie.
I also want to say some things about the directing. In the first movie, directing was obviously bad but Recep İvedik character saved the day. In this sequel, we "surprisingly" see that the director has shown no improvement since the first movie and even got worse. This is not good news for his career, I think it would be good for him to try his chances in other fields before it is too late.
If you can handle the swearing without a story and have excess money, you can watch this movie on cinema, otherwise it is a C-grade movie which at most deserves being watched on video.
Issiz Adam (2008)
A hard choice between love and freedom
It is hard to come across modern day love stories in Turkish cinema and I guess this made a great contribution to the popularity and box-office of the movie. However if you are a believer of old-fashioned love, you might feel a little bit discomforted with the movie, at least I did. The business of falling in love on Monday, making love on Tuesday, breaking up on Wednesday and forget about everything on Thursday has no buy in from me. I guess this kept me a little bit far to the story during the movie. Apart from that, the depiction of modern day city life is quiet successful . Isolation, hunger for love, dilemma of love and freedom are featured in a striking manner. The ending which is praised as the most powerful part of the movie makes no sense for me neither logically nor emotionally.
Acting is quiet weak, especially in the beginning of the movie but the charm of the actors saves the day. The mother is an exception to this observation, her voice and acting is very powerful and she contributes a lot to her scenes.
Movie soundtrack is superb in the sense that the songs and story are in perfect harmony. I believe the story would never have such an effect on the audience in the absence of the songs.
All in all, this movie deserves nothing more than 6 stars. We now expect better movies as this movie proved that Turkish audience is ready to pay for modern day love stories.
