Rather disappointing
11 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen this movie at the Braunschweig International Filmfestival 2023. To be honest, I was disappointed. The movie tells the story of a young couple where she has inherited a cork oak wood in the country side. The cork is being harvested every year and generates the necessary income. There are many problems the couple has to face. Who is harvesting the cork; how will the house be renovated and how does the house be protected against wood fires occurring often in the area? All these questions generate problems between the two. The cork is being harvested by undeclared workers and most of the story is about the life circumstance of these workers and is being aggravated when one worker has a serious accident. As a viewer we are keen to see how this story develops further and how all these problems are being solved but we are denied to witness this. Suddenly there is a cut and we see the couple in their renovated house with their child on a inauguration party, Apparently all problems were solved, we just do not know how.

an excellent coming of age film
8 November 2023
I saw this film today at the Braunschweig International Film Festival and I was deeply moved.

The story is about the self chosen responsibility of a boy for his two younger siblings because their widowed mother could not feed them. When he realized that her mother wants to move them back to the countryside, he spoke up for himself and the two younger siblings because he saw the importance of going to school.

Left alone by the mother, he is torn between earning money, going to school and caring for his younger siblings. The film shows the daily difficulties surviving in a yurt even when there is little heat and little to eat. A wonderful film with excellent characters.

An Excellent Film
6 November 2021
I have seen this movie recently at the 35th Braunschweig Filmfestival. I like movies that tell new stories and this movie cerrtainly tells a story I have not seen before. Furthermore the movie is very good creating a lot of suspense by revealing the story bit by bit. At the beginning the main character is released from prison in Poland and wants to find a woman with whom she shares something. That woman is hiding from her past on a small island that belongs to Island. Most of the story occurs there and it shows the rough life a polish community lives there. Most of them work in a fish processing plant. Slowly we learn what these two women share. This creates a lot of suspense. With every answer new questions come up. The actors play very well and it is unfortunate that the director of the film is no longer with us. He died shortly after the film was completed.

Warning: Spoilers
I have seen this movie at the Braunschweig Film Festival. The film tells the story of a young self educated piano player which is discovered by a piano teacher and is lead by two piano teachers, one played by the excellent Kristin Scott Thomas, to the final of a piano competition. On this way we learn about the many social problems of the young piano player and the obstacles his environment imposes on his development. Although the story is straightforward and at times predictable it is told in a very interesting and unconventional way. The beginning of the movie is the highlight, the end disappointing. At the beginning the movie confronts us with many questions that are only slowly answered and installs a lot of interest in the story. At the end, the predictable ending is topped with a totally unnecessary addition to tell us about the destiny of the two piano teachers that took care of the young guy and his own destiny after the piano competition. Not only is it a completely different world, in another country, the young piano player appears out of place and we do not know if this is really what he wanted. The movie should have ended with the piano competition. It is even left open whether or not he won it, which is a nice twist.

Thrilling

Warning: Spoilers
I have seen this movie at the Braunschweig Film Festival. A very exciting story about a series of suicides that turned out to be homicides, thanks to the attention of a member of the police, who uncovered a lot of unexplained details that made suicides rather unlikely. More over, the police woman has a lot of psychological problems which renders her unsuitable for the job. She cannot look at dead people and when being confronted with the potential killer she breaks down. These weaknesses are compensated with her bright mind and her determination in solving the murders even after they have apparently been solved. After the killer is booked and also committed suicide the cases have not been closed for her. She is so determined that she even risks the live of her daughter at the cost of solving the homicides. At the end, the world has literally turned upside down, the instigators of the homicides got booked but the killers themselve still live on, one of them very close to the police woman. A very chilling ending. The movie was excellent because it is a story that has never been told this way before.

More questions than answers
19 June 2017
I just saw this film on DVD and was a little disappointed. Right at the start one of the main characters commits a terrible crime. Although in the course of the movie it becomes clear that he may have been influenced by an evil ghost, it is hard to develop sympathy for him. Also the other characters are poorly developed leaving a lot of questions about their pasts to understand their sometimes inconceivable behaviour. Beside these problems with the story, the animation is excellent. The backgrounds are rich in details, reminding me of a medieval city in the bycantine era. Unfortunately, at the end of the movie I was left with more questions than answers.

Why the hype?
17 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This film is OK, but not outstanding. With a running time of 160 minutes it is far too long and some obviously boring scenes could have been shortened. There are a lot of irrational decisions by the protagonists. If they were funny they could aid the film. However, they aren't. What is funny about eating a sperm soaked petite four? The joke with the fake teeth is overstretched and redundant. Some jokes by the father have even to be declared as jokes by him otherwise nobody would have understood them. What is most ungratifying with this film is the lack of connection to the main character. He was so poorly introduced, I did not feel any sympathy with him. Some of his actions were meant to be funny but were so stupid I felt sorry for him. Even the end leaves you with a "so what?". The daughter keeps her unsatisfying type of job although at a different company and the relationship with her father seems to be just the same as before. Lucky for the daughter, her new job is much farther away from her fathers home. There is hope that he leaves her alone.

Yackety-yak

I only like Woody Allen movies without Woody Allen as an actor. So I had some hopes for this one. I was a little disappointed. The off-voices were as much disturbing as Woody Allens hyper nervous and talkative acting. Why do we need off-voices here? The plot is very tense and interesting by itself. The story develops a lot of suspense in a very subtle way with the usual surprise ending that I like in Allens movies. It was a fairly enjoyable experience and Emma Stones acting was excellent. You can read her face in every scene without the need of constant explanation by her off-voice. The transition Joaquin Phoenix character experiences was rather hard to understand and the subject of a lot of after movie discussions. Still, isn't there a psycho in every Allen movie?

Mr. Turner (2014)

Boring
10 November 2014
I normally like Mike Leighs films and "Another Year" was a very good movie I saw. Unfortunately I was disappointed by Mr Turner. For a two hour movie there was not enough story line. The characters were poorly developed. When Turner returned to his father, I had a hard time believing it because the actors age made that rather unbelievable. There were nice moments and beautiful scenery in the film, but awfully redundant. Also, the manners of Mr Turner never changed, no character development. I really longed to learn more about Turners relationship with woomen, customers and peer artists through the film. The film basically showed, Turner lived, painted and died. Only a few scenes allowed us to get an idea about his working process. I also was left puzzled to find an explanation for why he inherited most of his paintings to the Nation even after learning that the future queen hated one of his paintings. At the end I did not learn much about Turner.

a very human movie
14 May 2014
Today I gave my rating for this movie that I really liked. I did not want to write a review but I was a little disappointed by the summary for the movie written on IMDb. It says: "Depressed single mom Adele and her son Henry offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride." Adele and her son do not offer the man a ride which is very important for the story. Having said this, let me say a little about this movie. The movie plays very nicely with fear and tension. Any moment we expect something very terrible to happen. Murder, betrayal, rape, you name it. In contrast, an interesting and amicable relationship between the three main characters develops. The movie even has a happy end that is kind of unexpected. Seeing this movie I felt like being in an earthquake only to learn afterwards that no damage was done.

Disappointing
7 May 2014
I've seen this movie yesterday and was disappointed. Especially since I really liked the first and second prequel. I am always turned off by a movie that is badly edited, badly scripted and does not really have a good story to tell. If one keeps close attention one will notice many illogical situations. Not everything needs to be logical in a movie but it is better not that obvious. For example, I encourage everybody to keep a close look for pregnant and non-pregnant women, for the main doors to the houses when children's are picked up and delivered, and for some awful dialog when somebody reveals "something very personal" nobody cares about. There is much more like this. This movie could easily feature as a bad TV soap opera. Just see for yourself. The only thing that kept me in the movie theater were a few scenes that are really funny and some camera work for which movies by Cédric Klapisch are famous for. By the way, the music is excellent.

Funny and crazy
25 September 2013
I've seen this movie in a special screening here in Germany. To my surprise only few people went to see it. Normally, when they show Turkish movies, the theater is packed. The movie was like an Almodovar movie without the sex. It was mostly very funny. It is about a dysfunctional family, a similar story as in Mr Morgan's Last Love but presented as a soap opera. From early on in the movie the audience is let in on the secrets which the three kids are hiding before their father, an old patriarch. He clearly is the boss and even the grown up kids still obey him. He has been hospitalized due to an accident and the kids reunite as a family. The story is about how their secrets are slowly discovered by the father and the siblings. The movie has a fast pace and it is sometimes hard to catch up with the subtitles.

boring
10 September 2013
This was definitely the wrong film for me. This film is only suitable for people that are into celebrities, designer products, brand names, and social networks. There is no story, no development, and almost no likable character. I should have been warned about the movie because Paris Hilton is in it. I actually thought of leaving the theater halfway through. What really put me of was the fact that the kids are talking about their break-ins publicly and that it takes so long until they finally get caught. The only thing that kept me watching the film was Marcs character. He is interesting and I almost felt sorry for him because he was dragged into this.

Slowly moving
28 August 2013
After Sandra Nettelbecks movie Mostly Martha I had high hopes for this one and was not disappointed. In contrast to Mostly Martha, the film is more Drama than Comedy. This movie is about a dysfunctional family with a father/grandfather being estranged from his children. This is something almost every family can relate to. The movie develops slowly, revealing the family secrets one by one. At the end we will feel sympathy with every member of the family because we understand their positions but we are far from knowing how to solve their problems. The solution or kind of a solution that will leave most of us happy is also revealed slowly. This is a slow movie with very good acting. Michael Caine is excellent. The only thing that bothered me a little was the music.
