The Retreat (2021)
Missing opportunities
For the sake of social curiosity,it would have been interesting to see more details about the bigoted killers--was their snuff film operation bigger than just the murders we saw? Also ultimately,I think more could have been made of the fact so many people were gleefully watching the live-streaming murders..reminds me of the "banality of evil" principle author Hannah Arendt discusses-atrocities require varying levels complicity by ordinary people-and in this case, the demand of passive audience acts as a means to perpetuate supply. For me,the "just desserts"at the end made it worth the viewing..
Joshua (2007)
Underrated!
I only gave this movie an 8 because I believe there are people who will not watch movies rated lower than a 6,other people will see a lower rating, watch the movie with a bias and then subsequently rate it similarly.
Rating the movie compared to others with its
general theme,I thought it was well done. The original movie "The Bad Seed" is probably one of the earliest of its type and is definitely a classic and cannot be beat
for its originality, but this one is more detailed and contemporary. If there was a supernatural component I would have graded it lower-not because I do not like the horror genre, but because I do,but find "demonic child" trite and boring. This movie looks at realistic pathologies in children experiencing what to them, feels
like existential insecurity and feeling of displacement with the addition of a sibiling-particularly when they are
over a certain age or they themselves had issues with early bonding. Obviously only a small portion of children are,or will become, true sociopaths or psychopaths. However, because we are living in a world where more and more acts of mass violence are occurring at the hands of young men, because preventative mental healthcare is lacking in this country( as is sufficient reactive mental healthcare in general),its pretty helpful to explore, even imagine through a movie, the factors and origins of these pathologies. Maybe for some people the movie will remind them of jealousy or "dark" thoughts they had as children when no longer only child, and maybe it could give people purposely spacing their childrens births apart something to keep in mind- that even if their
only child is not a genius, neuroatypical,or anywhere near sociopathic- there truly are differences in having kids under 4 years apart and over 5 years apart.. every family is different-but expanding our thinking before making life altering decisions is important- as is understanding the dark parts of the mind-and those
whose "shadow selves" take over rational thought.
Its worth a watch.
The Deep House (2021)
New concept makes it worthwhile
Because I really only enjoy the horror genre,I have watched so many movies my enjoyment threshold is reduced. However, this one got my attention. Its a little dizzying and dark like a "Blair Witch" situation,( which later adds to the frenzy) -but adding the stress of being underwater with the limited oxygen supply,a freaky house "frozen" in time, and the weird horror unfolding-there is enough to keep your eyes on screen-even if you may be like myself and want just a little more backstory.
