My Lover, My Killer (2021– )
1/10
Absolutely foul
30 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Watching episode 2, it became very apparent that this documentary series is biased in the worst way possible, and is just exploiting people's stories for financial gain. The story of Gary and Olivia blew my mind. They treat the man as a victim when there is hard evidence that he was abusive, even being convicted of abuse in his past. How could you write a sob story for him knowing this? It's absolutely distasteful and misogynistic, and the writers and producers should be ashamed of themselves. I hope Olivia is able to gain justice for her imprisonment, which also resulted in the murder of her son. This is disgusting.

It's truly a work of art
7 October 2022
I can't pretend I wasn't shocked by the rating of this film here. Strawberry mansion is a beautifully shot piece of art that deserves more recognition and praise. The direction, scoring, imagery, and acting are all romantic, and somewhat poignant, at all times throughout the setting of the film, and it's enough to make you feel as if you are walking with these characters through their experience. An instant cult classic, a fever dream for the wake, and a story of true love; it has it all. If you like to venture off the beaten path, this one is for you. If you're more into stories of repetition and predictability, maybe skip this one.

Doesn't hold a candle to the book
24 September 2022
I suppose if you've never read the novel, you may find this movie to be entertaining, but as an avid reader, I have to say Delia Owens' book is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of reading, and this film does not do the story justice. The story is so beautifully and poetically written, and following Kya through her childhood and coming of age is an intense ride through various emotions that the film just doesn't provide. It is extremely rushed, very shallow even. Do yourself a favor and read the novel before watching the movie, I promise you will not regret it! I will say that the direction and acting is at least decent.

I was surprised by the rating, so it's a 10 for me.

Unique, well acted and written thriller. Kate Hudson is great in this one, and the twist at the end caught me off guard my first watch. It has remained a favorite of mine throughout the years.

Fifty Shades for teens? Where is the story line?
29 April 2022
The whole time trying to get through this movie I thought, "This is written like really bad fan-fiction." Turns out, that's because it is! Nothing at all happens. It's basically a PG version on Fifty Shades, but even more boring and uneventful.

A series of poor choices and zero percent probabilities
26 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The direction and acting was decent, however, the plot was nothing but a frustrating mess of improbable likelihood and the least likable protagonist I've seen in a movie, probably ever, making the dumbest choices possible. The entire time I just found myself screaming at the tv with what any person possessing more than 2 brain cells would do in her situation over and over and over again. Not to mention, our villain must be clairvoyant with the way he keeps relentlessly finding her in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, even after floating down a river. There is a scene where he stands in the woods reciting a monologue trying to provoke her to come out, but there's absolutely no way he could have known she was in that exact spot and didn't just keep running from him. I could go on and on about the poorly written script and characters, but I'll let you see for yourself.

Great representation of vet medicine
2 April 2022
As a vet tech, I've tried watching a few related shows, and no one is as likable or as passionate as Dr. Jeff. He's an incredible DVM, and although I have seen him face some criticism for certain ways he practices, his heart is fully in his career, and any tech would be honored to work for someone like that. Great, genuine show. Very heart-warming and true to the field. This is why we do what we do.

King of the Hill (1997–2010)
10/10
Intelligent humor that doesn't have to be gross or slapstick.
28 March 2022
I never really got into King of the Hill when it aired on television. I used to flip through the channel if it ever did come on, but I was also in my early twenties when cable became obsolete, so I'm not sure my sense of humor had ripened enough to appreciate it yet. It actually wasn't until just this week in early 2022 that I decided to put it on as background noise on Hulu. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. It's a very funny allegory on the "All-American family" from the late 90's-early 00's. Growing up in the south, I knew many Hank and Peggy Hills. The humor is subtle, which is what makes it easier to appreciate. There isn't someone yelling in your face to make you think it's funny. I was quite surprised by the mediocre reviews. I suppose not everything is for everyone, but this one is a winner in my book.

Mildly entertaining commentary on partisanship
3 November 2021
Pointing out the extremes of each side of the American political system is something I can get behind. Partisan politics is shaped like a horseshoe, meaning that people on opposite sides of the spectrum are closer in theory than they think they are. This movie is a satire on this fact. It's entertaining enough to watch once. I didn't laugh out loud at any point, but I did roll my eyes a lot.

The Manor (I) (2021)

Boring, pointless, full of holes.
9 October 2021
I'm not sure who the target audience was here, but I couldn't connect to any of the characters. The acting was mediocre, the few special effects were so obvious that it was embarrassing. The story was predictable and unoriginal. The only saving grace was the ending going a different way than expected. How come no one could get out of the nursing home, but the grandson just came and went as he pleased without any explanation of how??? It made no sense, nothing was captivating about it, everything that happened I guessed before it actually did. A good movie to put in and talk asleep to, but not very entertaining.

The poor reviews are from people who didn't get it
20 September 2021
The 5.8 rating on this movie completely shocked me. I see so many people calling this film a "waste of time" or "pointless."

This film is delivering a message without so blatantly shoving it in your face and spelling it out, which is the worst thing it could do, so I'm very glad it didn't.

The cuckoo birds in the beginning of the film are very symbolic of the direction it ends up taking. If you pay attention, you can absorb the message presented of the tedious tasks of capitalism, suburbia, and the expectation of modern life which is constantly being shoved down our throats by media and society. The tone and setting are eerily disturbing without having to be stereotypically dull and dark. The story is interesting, and I was invested in the characters. It's a short film, so it doesn't drag on too long to get the point across.

If you didn't get it, you just didn't get it. That doesn't make it a bad movie. I loved it, even after a rewatch.

Honestly surprised by the reviews here
13 September 2021
This movie is one that I loved when I was younger. I have found that the older I get, the more I look back on movies from the past and wonder how I ever enjoyed them. Recently rewatched this with my boyfriend who had never seen it, and it was still very enjoyable. It feels effortlessly funny, and not in a way like most "teen comedies" where it uses only bodily functions and sex to do so. Kutcher and Murphy seem to have a natural chemistry that was great for the film, and they're both in their element in this one. It's not going to be the best movie you've ever seen, and it's not meant to be. I wanted to give it a bit higher of a rating, I'd usually go with 7, just BECAUSE my boyfriend liked it because he almost never likes these movies. Definitely worth a watch.

Surprised by the ratings
5 September 2021
I thought this movie was great. If you like any sort of dystopian themed films of books, this is for you. I was very invested in the story and on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. I feel like it was really well done considering the budget. It's one of those movies that still have you thinking about it the next day. I'd recommend it and I'd watch it again.

How anyone could rate this poorly is beyond me
27 August 2021
Seven Pounds is a moving a beautiful work of art. Smith is an incredible presence on screen, and portrays his character in a very sincere way. Bring tissues. I cried more during this film than I have altogether this year.

If you love the book, this movie isn't for you.
26 August 2021
Probably the worst book to film adaptation I have ever seen. The Giver completely moved me as a child, and I actually reread it every few years. The movie completely turns its back on the book, so that is why I've given it a 6/10. However, if you haven't read the book, it's probably a great and enjoyable film.

I couldn't stop watching
31 July 2021
I'm shocked at the negative reviews. I missed sleep watching this series. The story was profound and kept me on the edge of my seat. I was so invested in the characters that I found myself literally screaming at the antagonists. Some parts were very uncomfortable to watch, but I think it's a good thing to point out how real and active racism was not even that long ago. It is meant to make you uneasy, and it succeeded in many ways.
