Gleason (2002)
Garrett IS Gleason
Brad Garrett embodies Jackie Gleason in this film. No wonder he was nominated for an Emmy for his performance. He looks like Gleason (with the exception of his towering stature), he has Gleason's mannerisms, voice, and walk down to a tee. Amazing performance by Garrett and the supporting cast is good too. The story is a little sad from his childhood to his dysfunctional personal life but Gleason managed to hold it all together professionally. My only negative is the movie ending. I would like a different ending to wrap up the rest of the film in a better way. If you have ever watched The Honeymooners videos or you are a Jackie Gleason fan, you should see this film.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022)
Fun Film!
What a breath of fresh air this movie is with all the craziness going on in the world today. It is set in 1957 when life was more refined, cultured and simpler...women were women and men were men. Love the fashion of the 50s and the plot is so charming. The star of the movie does a great job playing the determined Mrs. Harris and the rest of the cast is very capable also. But don't take your husband to see this. It is definitely a "chick flick." Gather a group of your female friends and have a fun outing at the movie theater, seeing the adorable Mrs. Harris.
(600 characters is a lot. Is this a new thing here? Guess my complaint will cover the 600. Blah, blah, blah...)
Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
All Around Great Movie
There aren't many films that appeal to me these days. It seems great film making in Hollywood has mostly vanished. But this film was wonderful.... Quality acting, a great, plot, and a surprise ending. It is a film for men and women alike. The girl who stars in the movie does a great job and the other actors do as well. It really gives you an appreciation for living in a rural setting among nature and all that this offers. I would highly recommend an evening out to see this rare find in today's movie desert. You will be glad you chose to see this fine character study and touching plot. Loved it.
Elvis (2022)
Long and Creepy
The actor playing Elvis is pretty good and he resembles Elvis a lot. I am usually a big Tom Hanks fan but his portrayal is creepy and fake looking. This film is depressing, chaotic, and WAY too long (2 hrs. And 39 minutes). Don't waste your time.
Das Leben der Anderen (2006)
BORING
Don't waste your time on this film. It's dark and boring. Besides, if you are an American you need only look at our Federal government to see the same scenario in play since 2021....
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Pretty Silly
Totally implausible, overly dramatic, not at all scary. Typical Hollywood lecturing to the rest of us how we are not the only beings on the planet....blah, blah, blah. If the movie had only shown dinosaurs and no people, it might have had a chance at being good....because, of course, the computer graphics were awesome. The first Jurassic Park was SO much better. Stick to the the original.
Woman in Gold (2015)
Excellent Film
In a time where most movies are of inferior quality and/or pitiful remakes of previous films, this movie shines with excellence. It is the true story of a woman and her attorney's perseverance to acquire justice for a wrong from decades past. This is about the Holocaust, Nazism, and the Jewish people. I have seen many great movies on this subject but I would have to say this is one of the very best. The story is well presented and the acting is wonderful.
I would highly recommend this film to anyone.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
Dark...
A dark and unnecessary account of behind the scenes on the set of I Love Lucy. Everyone knows Desi was a womanizer and that Lucy was trying to save her marriage by having Desi play Ricky on the show but the show itself was funny and genius. Nicole Kidman does a fair job of playing Lucy but the movie is tedious, boring, and gloomy. Don't waste your time and go watch an episode of I Love Lucy.
Richard Jewell (2019)
Another great movie from Eastwood
This movie confirms what we already knew...government (specifically the FBI) and media corruption. Sad how biased and crooked our once trusted institutions have become. They really savaged this poor security guard and put him through hell to concoct a narrative that wasn't true. Kathy Bates as Jewell's mother was excellent, as always. The Hollywood critics and media types may not like this movie but that's to be expected. It exposes them, after all. Pay no attention to their negativity and be sure to see another Eastwood great film.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
Odd
Tom Hanks is always good and did a great job playing Mr. Rogers. But the storyline is dark and odd, to say the least. Weird how the story unfolds. Not a fan and wouldn't recommend. Disappointed.
Rocketman (2019)
Inspirational Story of How to Overcome
In the beginning of the movie, I didn't think I was going to like it. But as the movie went on, I began to understand the director's concept of revealing Elton's life through his music. It's an inspirational film to all who have had a troubled childhood. It shows that you can overcome and that real love does exist beyond the love you get or (don't get) from parents. The actor who plays Elton was wonderful and looked a lot like him. In addition, if you are a fan of Elton John's music you will enjoy the musical numbers throughout. Well done.
The Favourite (2018)
Over the Top
First, the positives: The acting by the entire cast was superb. The costuming was fabulous as well.
The negatives: The story was pretty gross and totally fiction. There is no confirmation that Queen Ann was Gay. People who see this film and don't know history will think it is true, perpetuating a myth. The queen is turning over in her grave right about now!
The Howards of Virginia (1940)
Overacting abounds
I love the premise of this story about the founding of the U.S. but was disappointed in the acting. I am a big Cary Grant fan and have seen many of his films but this is a terrible performance, unlike any of his other films. No wonder he refused to do any more period pieces after the failure of this movie. However, it must be said that the director shares the blame and should have done a better job of directing Mr. Grant in this movie. His acting was over the top- too loud, too brash, a caricature of backwoods men of the late 1700s. His leading lady also did her share of overacting but nothing to compare to Mr. Grant. Overall, it is worth watching to get a sense of the events leading up to the Revolutionary War and the war itself and to see Mr. Grant in a role uncharacteristic of his usual fine acting.
The Four Seasons (1981)
Great film!
"The Four Seasons" is a wonderful character study about friendship, marriage, and being middle aged. Shamefully, they don't make movies like this anymore. I was able to identify completely with the characters, their marriages, and their friendships. It made me see that my husband and I aren't the only married couple in the world who can disagree but still have a deep love and appreciation for each other. I would not recommend this movie for anyone under the age of 30. One has a more developed appreciation for this screenplay if you are older and more experienced at life. However, I would highly recommend this film to anyone over 30. It is delightful!
