Maryland (2023)
Could have been so much more
Reading the glowing reviews, I'm wondering if i saw the same drama. How could this rate a 10? The scenery was beautiful, and the older sister did well, but the writing couldnt pull off the deeper issues, which was a shame. So much could have been done to explain why the mother couldnt be honest with her family or her husband. I'm assuming that she loved her husband once, wasnt he worth some honesty? The two sisters had little chemistry and Stockard Channing was an odd addition. The male characters felt more
like phantoms than real people. I love an English drama, and it was refreshing not to see graphic sex, but this felt limited and stunted.
The Tourist (2022)
Skip Season 2 for sanity's sake
We watched season one and it was pretty good, unlikely but good. There is a lot going on, so you didn't really see there wasn't a lot of chemistry between the two love interests. It just didn't work in the second season and there were many cringe worthy scenes. Danielle's ex-boyfriend was pretty funny towards the end, but Jamie and Danielle we're not a couple, there was one scene where he really yelled at her and I wonder if he even liked her. There were some believable characters in the Irish gangsters, but as far as making it all work I don't think it was successful. At the end, I couldn't even watch the dance scene because it felt so silly. I think you can have a serious story with funny undertones, but somehow it didn't work and I ended up hate watching it.
The Bear (2022)
First season was best
I saw The Bear had won a few Golden Globes so i started watching it. There was a tension and a raw emotion to it that made you move to the next episode, and the next and the next. It was chaos, and anger and unresolved trauma and I was there for it. I hated characters but then learned to like them, pulling for their success. But then the second season came, and everything became predictable. Now they found "a formula." Only problem was the edgyness was gone, and things seemed to become more wrote and predictable. It was like falling in love, and battling through all the tension of Does she like me, should i make a move? And then the climatic kiss, and you're in that relationship. Season 2 is married life. A bit predictable and stable. I miss the rawness of the first season.
Shin Gojira (2016)
Maybe 10 min of Godzilla?
I was looking for a Godzilla movie and so I looked up the best ranked movies of Godzilla in order. I think this is ranked number three? Why? I think you get to see Godzilla about 10 to 13 minutes in the entire movie. The rest is about bureaucratic red tape and is about as boring as watching paint dry, I wouldnt recommend watching this movie if you want to see lots of Godzilla, because most of it is the Japanese government having meetings and strategies and warfare and I was very bored and disappointed that I spent money on this movie. The monster itself is very awesome but it's not worth a time You have to spend seeing him between boring technical meetings and politicians trying to make themselves look good. Next.
Project Runway (2004)
Can't watch past the first episode
I saw the new season of this, and was intrigued by the lack of Heidi Klum, and a little excited to see what it would be like. Pretty standard introduction of people, shopping at mood fabrics, getting their inspiration, etc. But when it came to the last of the first episode, one of the contestants showed her garment, and it was falling apart on the runway. It was between her and another girl, who, at least finished an outfit for her model to wear, and what do you know the person whose outfit was falling apart got put through to the next episode. I've watched this show for a number of years, for some reason, but I can't go on watching it with this blatant unfairness and favoritism. It was never a great show, but this just makes it unwatchable.
The Small Hand (2019)
All he had to do was sell the house!
I. Like many of you, wanted to like this movie. I love Douglas in anything he does usually, but this was horrible with such common and contrived tropes. He looked like he was in pain for a lot of the movie and I guess it was because he had to be in it. Seriously once you buy a house and it's haunted, sell it and move on with your life. I watched it with the sound off when the ghosts showed up because I just couldn't stand the ridiculousness of it. Skip this movie and find another one to watch because it's just not worth the time. I kept thinking it was gonna get better, but it never did, especially the disappointing ending. Bleh.
The Take (2009)
Love tom Hardy, but not this
This is definitely not a family movie so much violence and prefunctory sex scenes, Tom resembles a mad dog rather than anything that resembles a human. He kills and maims and rapes, and then kills and maims and rapes again. I had wondered why I had never heard of the series, but a couple of episodes in, I realize why. I dont see how anyone could say this is worthy drama, and am flummoxed by these reviews.
If you want to see a Tom Hardy movie + violence watch Lawless, a much better movie to showcase Tom's smolderings, and crazy 'get even at any cost' persona. I left before the series finished, very disappointed.
Deadloch (2023)
I think the town's detective is the only sane one
This is a crazy, over-the-top murder mystery that makes you want to quit it in every episode. The detective that comes from Darwin is like a road runner on speed and very hard to watch. The sexual innuendos are over the top and I don't think any of them can speak without saying fu@king.... The town's detective seems to be the only sane one, but even she gets caught up in it. I seriously think that the writers are roasting a particular sexual identity, but I could be wrong. I can't believe I've stuck with it this long, I guess I'm waiting for it to be good but I haven't found the prize yet. I don't know why rotten tomatoes gave it 100%. I want Taika Waititi to show up
and make it all better!
Electrician (2020)
Not for everyone
If you have a short attention span or get bored easily this film is not for you. I thought it portrayed extreme boredom with one's job very well, and the slow realization that something is wrong with you. The frustration of trying to do the right thing, but no one really understanding you or acknowledging your efforts. His girlfriend not
letting him see his son, his illness, and his slow death. The starkness of the film is amazing for such a low budget, and I was glad I happened upon it. His work crew was hilarious and so typical of the average group that talk about ridiculous things, and always a screw up. If you have the time to pay attention its worth it.
Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields (2023)
Revisiting Sadness and Exploitation
One reviewer said they see panic in her eyes, and I agree i see it as well as she retells these horrible examples of exploitation of her childhood. I cringed at some of the retelling of these movies and ads, they were painful at the time. Why did her father never protect her from her alcoholic mother, perverted directors and money hungry designers? Were there no trustworthy adults anywhere? Surely this child sex exploitation of Brooke Shields pushed sex trafficking and porn forward, in ways we could never have imagined. To be exposed like this from such a young age is truly perverted, my heart is heavy for her and all that were influenced by it. I guess there was no one around that cared enough for her to separate her from her mother, a truly evil person.
The Big Door Prize (2023)
2 stars for Chris
I wanted this to be good because I really love Chris O'dowd's acting. He was so good in Get Shorty! It was obvious from the start this wouldnt be good because it seemed he couldnt act to his potential with the writing he was given. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt when all the weirdness started, but 5 minutes into the second episode i had to turn it off. What would you do if you had a second chance to do it all again? Would you really turn into a full blown narcissist and
make it all about you? This is where is seemed to be heading, and even Chris couldnt save it unfortunately!! Hope for better things from him in the future.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Season 5 so confusing....
The amount of glowing reviews about this series is incredible and suspect. I liked the series until season five were all the sudden different characters drop the ball and act completely insane. Why does Britta become a complete mad woman and reject her childhood friend? Why does the king make so many insane decisions? Why does the queen mother complain about not hearing from God, when all she does is scheme and plot? There was a lot of inconsistencies in this season that were just confusing, I guess because they got new writers, and it was maddening and disappointing. I can't believe that in real life there was that much fighting. It seems that life consisted of falling in love, humping, espionage, fighting, someone important dies, falling in love, humping, espionage, fighting.... and on it goes.
Jamaica Inn (2014)
Please look for something else!
I really like period dramas and have seen so many that were well done but I think this is the worst one I've ever seen. The characters walk around and stare at one another, waiting for the sexual tension I'm assuming? The scenery of course is beautiful but I still won't consider staring an acting ability. I've read other reviews that say it's dark and moody but I would say it was confusing and ridiculous. It's like watching the paint dry. Please look for something else and don't waste your time on this. I couldn't believe how bad it was and don't understand the positive reviews. It's an insult to Daphne du Maurier.
The Great Comic Relief Bake Off: Episode #2.3 (2015)
This was unfair!!!!
I was really excited when I saw that the Roku channel was showing sport relief from the great British bake off series, and there are number of seasons worth watching. But this episode was absolutely ridiculous. The clear winner was Sarah, and not Michael, Paul Hollywood again makes a mistake and I guess it was supposed to be funny that Michael won but it wasn't funny at all when people are serious about the competition and Sarah was the clear winner, and Michael was not. I was totally disappointed with this episode, and it just reminds me of how the bake off made bad decisions over and over in the later seasons. This reminded me of when Kim Joy lost, all because Paul liked the other baker better. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!!
Darby and Joan (2022)
Slow and predictable
Not sure why this has such glowing reviews? Its corney and predictable, and there is no chemistry between the leads. Australia is beautiful, for sure, but even that cant save this series. I kept waiting for it to get better but it never did. The reviewers must be paid? I was really shocked because usually Australian productions are done well. The situations they find themselves are pretty unbelievable. Was Joan really going to go scuba diving? No. Sleeping in the same bed? No. I gave it a chance because of the high rating, but ended up hate watching, and after the restaurant fire, I couldnt go on.
Alone in Berlin (2016)
Critics are Wrong, this was a great slow burn
I read the critics reviews and wasn't sure of the movie, but i was wonderfully surprised, it was really good. Great acting and relationship between husband and wife. The subtleties are lost on some i guess. The tension and build up are good, and the heartbreak of losing a child so real. How people try and live within a insane system, with death and violence all around then was well depicted too. The colors and muted tones were subtle and showed the bleakness of living with less during war time. I hadnt even heard of this movie, and Emma Thompson is one of my favs! She did an amazing job as did the actor playing her husband.
Whitstable Pearl (2021)
Predictable ending so you'll watch season 2
I thought it was OK even though they slammed religion in one of the episodes all up until episode six. It was really confusing and the detective from London was only trying to help. It seem like they were making progress and then all the sudden for no reason she tells him to go on his way which made no sense. Was it supposed to be some sort of women power at the end? " I'm going to stay with my mother come with may?" The working out of the detectives trauma at losing his wife was pretty realistic, but why he would be attracted to the main character was more confusing. Her telling him to "not to wait" must have been a ruse for season two that's the only thing I can figure out and that's cheaply done. I would tell him to walk away and never come back!
The Crown (2016)
Where's the real Diana?
I'm just wondering why Diana is seen as hiding in her home when she travelled everywhere for the different causes she was involved in? Why she is not shown touching and interacting with aids patients and walking by mine fields? How about housing for the poor? Those with leprosy? Why does it seem Charles gets more of a free pass ? Maybe because of the political climate? Shame on you for making her a selfish, narcissistic royal who hid away. She was completely loved and the most popular royal. This season of the Crown just seems like pandering to the establishment, and unfortunately, this is who the younger generation will think she is. The very person that tried to connect with her people, and did a dang good job.
The Sinner (2017)
Not sure why this has to be SO long??
A few years back I noticed that staring had become an acting ability, and in this series that ability is front and center. I feel sorry for this troubled man as he walks through this tiny town trying to solve murders. It seems like he's been wanting the hug he finally gets in the last episode the entire time. Over simplified relationships, a dead girl who isn't, and blaming God for not interceding in a life you never gave him, are some of the things you'll experience, but I think the hug said it all. Never pass up the opportunity to give one. I couldnt believe how long they made it last, and they never really explained the grunting of
naked women in the forest.
The Beast Must Die (2021)
Last episode the best
I hadn't heard of the books by this author so I didn't go in with any expectations. It was a little bit of a slog to get through the episodes, but the acting was pretty good, Especially the last episode. People arent perfect, and have their own struggles, and this series worked through the character's struggles.. Not sure why the rich man and his sister were such terrible people, but they were. They both made everyone lives around them a living hell. I thought it ended well and hadn't guessed the ending as some have said in their reviews. It does take a major incident for some people to move on as I have experienced. Overall I would recommend it.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
first season better
I realize that we're trying to appeal to a younger audience, but did there really need to be a F@ck f@cked f@ck f@cked f@ck f@ckly f@cked tirade in the second season? Seriously? I guess swearing was easier than writing something better. Not needed, first season was better in every way.
The Brokenwood Mysteries (2014)
Why is this SO silly??
I was taken aback by Season 8, and the complete silliness of it! Was the whole thing done as a spoof, like tongue in cheek? I could only watch a few
Minutes of the silly 3 stooges mummy episode, it wasn't even funny. What happened??
Il cacciatore: Cacciatori (2018)
Meh
Jumped in at episode 2, mob boss chauffeur was the only likeable character so far. Subtitles move quickly, women are seen only as objects, the subtleties are lost on me, don't think I'll return.
Il conformista (1970)
Fell for it again.....
As a reviewer has stated here .. "Why do I keep watching these dumb foreign films just because critics tell me they are important and thought provoking?" That's it in a nutshell. "One of the most important films ever?" We are definitely in trouble if that is true. I think I'll walk out in the sunshine of my own views about what is important, because they certainly cannot be found in this movie.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Montana is beautiful...
Sooooo slow...and if you loathe a character, do you care about anything he might be repressing? I would say no. Tried to stay with it but fast forwarded through after the first half hour. It all works out in the end, IF you can get there.
