Jackie Chan Adventures (2000–2005)

Good show but not perfect
22 December 2020
I remember watching this show when I was a kid on Jetix and although it was long ago and I didn't watch many episodes, I had good memories. This year I decided re-watching it all and while it isn't bad it isn't perfect either...

The show is divided in 5 seasons, each with its own arc but each episode can be seen as an standalone story, even if they're connected (despite season 2 is full of filler episodes). Things I liked of this cartoon were the original ambience with all the elements of Chinese folklore, the main characters are pretty cool and most importantly, for most of the time the show is very entertaining. Personally my favorite seasons were the first and the third, which I consider equally good. Then season 2 because it had too much filler, and finally season 4 and 5 which are to be honest kinda bad. Or maybe I was saturated, it's almost 100 episodes! But except in the last part I enjoyed watching it.

Moving to the bad stuff, like I said before filler episodes and the last 2 seasons don't have very original or interesting plots and feel repetitive and uninspired. Also in the last 2 seasons the show becomes even more childish, at the begining it was a show for all ages but then I felt it was aimed exclusively at children. And the animation... Main character designs are fine, but the rest and specially the backgrounds are atrocious!!! And this is bad because it makes the show feel cheap. I don't mind that the backgrounds are simple, they're just very poorly drawn, so bad it's distracting.

To sum up, Jackie Chan Adventures it's a good cartoon to watch some episodes and remind good times from your childhood. Watching it all, it's in my opinion not worth the time. I just did it because of my stuborness, but objectively, there are many more cartoons (and shorter) who deserved being watched from begining to end than this one.

Too long and tedious
21 November 2020
I just watched this forgotten Disney musical on Disney +, because I thought it could be nice. The duration seemed unusually long for a musical but I liked the plot so I gave it a go. It was a bad decision.

It's a movie that could have been better if it was shorter and had less characters. 2 hours it's too much, the first hour is pretty neat, then it just gets worse and by the last 40 minutes I just didn't care about the story anymore and wanted it ended already. There's simply too much going on, not enough character development and too many subplots that don't go anywhere and make the film innecesarily long. Lots of songs, which are fine, but not memorable, no wonder any of the songs is remembered 6 years after this movie was released.

The photography and costumes are also very nice with beautiful landscapes and well done costumes, but does it really matter if the movie it's not worth watching? Only recommended if you really like musicals and fairy tales. Also not for children, they're going to be extremely bored as well.

Entertaining

To be honest it's just a standard action movie. The plot isn't very original and it's kinda predictable but it's still entertaining and worth watching in a boring afternoon or night. Considering that it's a movie basically made to sell toys it could have been worse.

The Little Mermaid (1992–1994)
7/10
Quite good TV series
24 May 2020
To be honest I don't know if many people would watch this cartoon almost 30 years after the release, but in case you do (like me) I don't think you will regret it. It's a prequel to one of the best animated movies Disney has ever made and it's not too long, only 31 episodes.

This series never pretended to go down in history as they were a mere spin-off of the original movie but that doesn't mean it's bad. Some chapters are bad but most of them are very fun and entertaining, children will for sure enjoy it more. There are some new characters apart from the ones we know from the movie which is good and offers variety, and also some good songs. The wonderful voice of Jodi Benson is one of the best features about The Little Mermaid TV series.

Animation isn't as good as Disney movies but it's understandable as most of the budget of the company was focused on the big screen movies yet it's decent, the colors are a bit more bland but still pretty good.

I would recommend it to parents with children who like Disney or fans of The Little Mermaid movie who want to see more of Ariel and all their friends. It's much better than the sequel!

Star Wars: Rebels (2014–2018)
8/10
Surprisingly good
18 April 2019
When I finished Clone Wars I asked if watching Rebels was worth it, and many people replied that no. They said that the show was very childish, with no memorable characters and that the animation was worse than in CW. Anyway, I did it and after finishing it I can say that it's as good as Clone Wars, in my opinion.

It's true that the first season isn't so good, you can even skip some episodes because nothing at all happens (There's a guide online showing which episodes you can skip), but after that the series really does get better. In season 2 many characters from Clone Wars return and there's plenty of references to stories from the previous show. Not only that, but the new characters evolve in a realistic way as the show progresses. It's funny how in the beginning I didn't symphatize with any of the main characters, but later I ended up liking all of them.

In Star Wars Rebels the stories are shorter than in its predecessor, usually of just one episode instead of the 3 or 4 episode arcs of CW. This is both a good and bad thing as the stories aren't so complex as we could expect and even sometimes feel rushed, but they're still pretty good. And since it's in the Imperial Era, it feels more like classic Star Wars movies. The worst part of the show is the animation, it's been downgraded from Clone Wars.

In conclusion, Star Wars Rebels is a very good show. If you like Star Wars you should watch it. The first season isn't good but later it gets really good and you won't regret watching it.

Cool World (1992)

A movie that could have been better
31 March 2019
I'm a very big fan of animated movies so sometimes I watch them even if reviews say they are bad. When I found out this movie existed I knew I had to watch it, the premise seemed really original: Mix of real actors and animated characters like in Roger Rabbit but with more adult humor and topics.

Sadly, the movie isn't so great. The pace is slow and the story isn't great at all, and most of the characters lack development. To compensate it, the style of the film is very unique and really absurd, if you like movies that don't make "much sense" you should watch this one. The animation is nice too considering this movie didn't have a huge budget.

To sum up, it's not a bad movie but not a good one either. Recommended for fans of animation and absurd movies.

Dumbo (2019)
6/10
Don't expect it to be like the original movie
31 March 2019
This was a fine movie. The CGI is really well done (Like in all Disney movies), specially the sequence that "remakes" the pink elephants on parade scene, my favorite of the original movie. The acting is okay, nothing special to be honest, it's what would you expect from a family movie. Regarding the soundtrack we don't have as many songs as in the animated movie, sadly.

However, I'm not sure if I would recommend this movie. The storyline is way different, the original movie basically was Dumbo trying to meet with his mother again (and the mouse helping him) and learning some values on the way, apart from finding his flying talent. This version in a nutshell is Dumbo doing things with many human characters, we don't see his interest of meeting with his mother again so much like in the previously mentioned version. Also, the movie has many sub-plots that don't really develop and that don't add much.

In conclusion, it's an okay movie but don't expect it to be a masterpiece and of course don't expect it to be like the original Dumbo movie. The only similar things are the main characters (Except the mouse, why would they remove him from the film?) and that there's a circus.
